OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

SETTING INFORMATION

  • Mine Name: AH Ghorman Kalkite Mine
  • Material: Kalkite, gravel(by-product), sand(by-product)
  • Location: Ghorman
  • Affiliation: Aina Holdings
  • Size: Massive
  • Population: Moderately Staffed
  • Profit: High
  • Accessibility: Due to its large nature, the mine is not hidden. It can easily be spotted from land or air.
  • Description: A massive exposed portion of earth with contoured benches leading deeper and deeper below the top soil. The strip mine is filled with equipment and workers so long as there is light.
POINTS OF INTEREST

  • Guard Stations : Located on the two roads leading into the strip mine. Staffed with sentient and droid security staff who inspect and monitor all vehicle traffic entering and leaving the strip mine area. The stations are purposely gated and traffic is funneled to one vehicle entering and leaving at all times.
  • Dormitory : Due to the history of mining on Ghorman, many locals were not keen on working in the strip mine. Aina Holdings workers from other locations have been brought in on a rotating work schedule with extra incentives to do so.
  • Landing Pad : Private landing pad ensures mining and transport vessels can land with ease for loading. Located well behind the perimeter fences, having the landing pad on property also provides an extra layer of security.
  • Strip Mine : Several massive pits on the landscape. A tiered system allows for equipment to move up and down the mines. Operations go from sunup to sundown, with the sound of heavy equipment echoing in the area nearly non-stop.So large, it can be seen from the atmosphere.
  • Offices and Communication : Connected via Vanir's Dark Web and the HoloNet, the Offices and Communications center is the brain of the operation. Everything is monitored here, from worker punch-ins to equipment movements. Separate from security, it is more a business and information center that connects with other Aina Holdings locations to provide and receive real time updates.

SECURITY

High.

Due to the sensitive nature of kalkite, the strip mining area has a number of security measures in place. Sentient and droid security patrols the area of the mine. All ground entrances are secured via gates and guard stations.A perimeter shield is in place to assist where guards may be stretched thin and to provide a main barrier to entry. Surveillance systems such as roving holocameras, an orbital satellite, and motion scanners all round out the robust security at the facility. A satellite monitors the strip mine from above, tracking equipment and movement changes. This is not to say the security is impenetrable. Power can easily fail. Guards can be killed. Droids and electronics are susceptible to powerful EMPs.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Long ago there was an attempt to mine kalkite from Ghorman. Technology, not being what it was at the time, relied on gouge mining that was highly unstable for the planet. An uprising occurred, squashed by the Imperials in order to gather the valuable substance. Once the Empire had fallen, the usefulness of Ghorman also fell by the wayside. With many of the citizens killed, even their infamous textile industry died out, putting the planet effectively out of the spotlight.

With the galaxy, especially the Core, under constant attack, a renewed interest as come to weapons development. Looking to expand his business beyond the typical minerals and gemstones, Makai researched into his next big thing and found kalkite. While scattered in a few locations around the galaxy, it is thought the most kalkite still resides in Ghorman.

Gouge mining was completely out of the question due to its ability to destabilize the planet. The decision was to go with strip mining. While slower and more cumbersome with many ecological affects, it is less so than the gouge mining process.

The kalkite strip mine is Aina Holding’s largest strip mine currently in use.
