Silver Jedi Training Centre, abandoned warehouse

ccf347e92bb74c0b906dd997a04da1b9.jpg

It turned out that falling into a safety net over and over started to hurt. Acaadi stood on the platform with the jedi waiting to take the course. Only three could be on it at a time.

The enormous warehouse had been converted into a test of focus and balance. A series of poles and beams, straight and curved had been suspended from the ceiling on chains.

A jedi had to hold their balance and walk across them slowly. The slightest shift of balance and whatever obstacle you were on were swing from side it side.

It was maddeningly difficult, which Acaadi had decided was the point. The thin best he wore was soaked with sweat and his bare feet felt tender and bruised. In six attempts he hadn't managed any more than half way.

Where many of the others were having a great time, he was falling into a frustrated silence and hiding away inside his own head. He knew what he needed. That perfect moment where he had centred himself on Kintan. He had felt one with the Force and everything had come easily. He couldn't seem to reach that state again. The light was fading and he would only get a few more attempts.

It was good, light hearted joy when they laughed at one another's misfortune. It wasn't so pleasant to hear that sound as the nets shot upwards to catch you. Acaadi dusted his bare feet with some powder for a little more grip and prepared to go again.

Darkness. Complete and utter darkness. A facility well buried. Once it had been deliberately closed off, but over time it had been built over time and again and no one remembered what it had been.

A red light flickered on, bathing an endless corridor in a dull red haze. Another and another until the entire corridor was fully lit. The presence of the light side was the catalyst for an old sith mechanism. In the depths a forgotten weapon stirred.

Kei was busy kei’ing around, that is in the bustle of it all somewhere at the back, hauling crates around with training supplies. Five old wildcards assisted, seasoned would be the polite term, some in camouflage uniform, some in civies, carrying training supplies into the padawans or arranging things as needed. None of them under fifty, all of them built like men and women who worked for a living and didn’t want to retire. He was using it as an excuse to shoot the breeze and catch up with some of them, happy to see the cards still helping in the day to day work behind the scenes as they had for so long now. Out of sight and mind.

Amadis had tried to teach before, but he was not much of a teacher. Not where it counted with consistency. Matsu had him beat a hundred to one in terms of consistency and organization, Coci and Thuron just for their charisma and wisdom both. Nima just for being a Tann, that counted for a lot. Boxes were easier than apprentices, you didn’t get them killed on some mission into the heart of a lion's den or sith pit. Truth be told this absence had hardened him again, it often did, the rim was a harder place than being around Jedi who had compassion to spare.

Dressed in light green armorweave with durasteel reinforcing around limbs and chest that gave him some ability to move. Though he only had his saber on him, he was never one for robes not even in training, Amadis had died too many times in robes or been close to it anyway, you’d rarely see him outside of his armor these days unless he was with family. The limp in his step was always present where he’d lost a leg once, the scarring to his face was pronounced from one too many battles. Shrapnel hits from artillery fire doing a fine number on his cheek, but past it there was that grin for the first padawan that turned his way, a firm reassuring one and an aura of confidence that greeted them with any problems they had.

Then a change happened… something, but he was distracted by...

Acaadi offered a nod to the armored jedi down on the floor. It was nice to have some older hands around to provide reassurance, but he knew that right now he was very much in a battle with his own mind.

The other padawans seemed to be enjoying the game more than him. He took its difficult as a personal affront and he was beginning to realise just how much he hated failure. He couldn't stand the thought of something he could not overcome.

A swear cut across the room and a pink body fell. He offered a brief applause for how far Kyra had got. The net caught her, but was a challenge in itself to climb. When she got close to the platform he pulled his head out of his own arse for a few moments to offer his hand to help her up.

Ura looked around the warehouse turned training room. It was like nothing she'd ever seen. All this, just to train in. Train up agility that you'd need to face any opponent. Acaadi and Kyra were there too, and a Jedi master she hadn't met yet. The Lervon simple gave him a nod, her green glowing eyes extremely easy to spot in the darker spot she'd ended up in. It was then that her eyes bounced from Acaadi to Kyra as she fell into a safety net from above.

The sandy Padawan looked surprised as she went up with Acaadi to check on her friend, hoping she was ok even if her voice couldn't really show it. She didn't have to use any tricks for Krya to tell at least, but she had begun to try and leave a little stronger sense of her emotions then normal for others to pick up on. "Kyra. You ok? You got pretty far up there."

Kyra huffed and puffed, red locks fluffed around her face and sticking to sweat on her neck as she climbed her way back up the net. As hard as this stupid challenge was, it was nice to admit she felt stronger doing it.

That was to say, the Kyra of 6 months ago would be struggling to keep her energy up climbing on this net alone. Now, her new formed muscles left her feeling capable... But not capable enough.

“I was so close,” she huffed, a glare cutting up at Acaadi to stop any chortling. In truth, she hadn’t gotten all that much closer than anyone else involved. There was this one tricky spot, where the ground went out from everything and they hand to rely on pure arm strength alone to propel them across a stretch of air.

It sent her falling every time.

Her body collided into his as she spilled back out on solid ground, both padawans sticky with exertion. She caught her breath for the barest of moments before straightening, pushing her hair out of her face. “I hate this,“ she told Ura Iolar Ura Iolar .

Lies. She loved this. It was a distraction, and a strong one.

Her attention pulled around the warehouse quickly, an embarrassed flushed to her cheeks as she did so.

“No one saw that, right?” She asked both, leaning forward, her voice hushed.

"Everyone saw that. And every other fall," said Acaadi before falling quiet once more. He was more determined than ever to find that centre once more. Perfect balance between body, mind and the Force. The more he tried, the more it evaded his grasp. He still enjoyed seeing Kyra with energy again. She had admitted he was her best friend and despite the circumstance of that moment he was holding onto it.

Acaadi stepped out over the edge. There was always that fluttering feeling as one overcame the animal instinct to step back. It soon passed.

The first part caught out so many people. Including him on his first go. It was a slender square pole that angled away from the platform. It meant walking carefully down a gentle slope. Acaadi had taken to keeping his left foot forwards and shuffling them in turn to avoid swinging the whole thing.

At the end of that first pole was a gap. Then a series of curved poles held like a series of swings ahead. The issue being that he wasn't allowed to touch the chains holding them up with his hands. He tentatively eased his balance back, lifted his left foot and reached across the gap to place it onto the next section.

Distracted from whatever that sensation was. Kei instead heard and sensed embarrassment or hesitation from those above at their difficult task. The grizzled Jedi looked up to the training above, a picture of failures and life across his face. Life. “Aim to live to fail a hundred times,” he said loudly to the whole warehouse but especially the three immediate students on the course. If they only knew how many times the SJO itself had picked itself up, often from the brink of catastrophe and yet it endured against all odds for so long as a beacon of hope. “Failure is life. Else we stagnate, fearful and fragile of expectations.” Removing the expectation on success removed the fear.

Kei hadn’t come to teach, it just came out of him. Passing platitudes were easy and often overused, he hated speeches. It was the day to day business of living that was hard. Falling, failing and adapting constantly, that was hard. If the course could have held four he would have rolled up his metaphorical sleeves and climbed up there with them. Failed alongside them, as it was he was here watching, sensing… what was that.

The Jedi Master closed his eyes briefly and tried to focus. Never a Master with the most acute senses, he was more the bash in the door guardian, or honestly a blow the door off the hinges Guardian. Snapped out of it by wildcard passing him a datasheet of something to thumbprint, checking the inventory of training materials that had arrived, he nodded firmly and thanked his old companion with a firm handshake.

Buzzing up a comlink Kei spoke into it quietly on his wrist. "Everything... normal?"

Ura looked at Acaadi, shaking her head slightly at the answer. She then let out a happy feeling as she looked at Kyra, hoping she could help. At least the Master there seemed to have some advice.

"Don't feel bad. I think everyone's fallen today." Ura then looked to see Acaadi starting, and once he got far enough through she decided to start going herself. It was a bit weird walking over an edge like that, and Ura also knew that she most likely had an advantage that would seem... unfair. She could shift and change her body to suit her needs, and that included things like this. Still, she could at least have some fun, but she also soon found herself catching up to Acaadi. If he happened to look back, she'd just give a slightly nervous wave. Ura really didn't want to seem like a show-off.

"There-sa maxibig disaster on Kintan; wesa needen to provide food for them-sa refugees"

While Kiros had its own set of refugees, there were so many of them the Togruta authorities on Kiros turned away the remainder, some of which made a stop by Kwenn Space Station. The Gungan started to get some food trucks going among the entertainment district, but even he knew that wouldn't do much to help the thousands of refugees from New Kalandra that still made it out alive despite all odds. That would go grab a bite after all they endured when the Sith attacked the planet for some reason that escaped the Gungan. He wondered what kind of food these refugees would eat, but the Gungan started preparing the ingredients for all the meals on Pizza Hutt's menu. Pizzas, pho, fried, the works.

Vertigo was in a worse mood than usual. Most of the Houks had missed Kintan. Missed a good fight and if he could be more ornery than usual today he was. Why did the brass always put him on cleanup, did he look like a maid?

Clunk. Clunk. Clunk. Heavy thunderous stomps on the floor. A walking wall of Houk muscle mass tried to get into wherever the food was being prepared. Disagreement about who should get in the doorway first was ensuing, and more importantly... “stop eating the food.” Vertigo grumbled to a fellow Ranger giving him a firm headbutt just to wake the giant creature up to his responsibilities. Ingredients weren’t actually food to most, but to Houks if it smelt like it was edible they’d give it a go just to test the theory.

Usually loaded up in more weapons than a force-god, the Ranger Houkfire team was loaded in a different manner today. They had trays attached to their front and backs, shoulders and arms, trays big enough to hold a man, stacked up with heavy foodstuffs.

“Where you want it.” Vertigo’s voice rumbled in his usual low bass tones to Ugohr Poof Ugohr Poof . One of the corporal’s men had a large lump of spaghetti sticking out of his maw, big enough to be a human hand, which he was trying to gulp down. Better for the kitchen or food prep area if the Houks didn’t get into an argument about missing ingredients. The saying bull in a china shop didn't do this crowd justice.

Kyra watched them walk off, a forlorn look about her as she observed with a reserved air. Kei Amadis Kei Amadis ’s words reached her, the padawan turning to study the jedi with furrowed brows. She didn’t recognize him, but that didn’t mean anything. The order was big and at the end of the day, she was still so new.

He sounded like a Master though, what with all that fancy talk.

She nearly told him off for it, but the sudden boiling of frustration took her by surprise and she shoved it down.

Just a side affect...

She seemed to regather herself just as the master dissolved into a troubled look. Her skin prickled, her senses turning in on themselves. Uh oh. “What is it?” She demanded, a spike of concern in her voice. She sharply looked between the man and her friends up on the ceiling, the girl quickly spiraling into unnecessary panic.

Were the sith back?

Her hand fell to her saber, knuckles white.

Amani had to stop a moment. This kind of exertion was not what she was used to. She spent most of her training stuffing her face in a book or meditating, perhaps mistakenly brushing off physical exercise in favor of mental pursuits. It was at the point where she has been so used to trudging around in full robes, that the weight shift of training in lighter clothing threw off her center of balance. It seemed slight, but it made all the difference.

Amani breathes in deeply, and wipes the sweat off her brow. She slides the top of the tunic down to tie it off at her waist, having only the undertunic up top would at least give her a little more air flow. Amani was not feeling particularly competitive, but she was determined to at least not look completely incompetent. She took some solace in knowing the others weren't overachieving here either. She brushes herself off, and begins again.

The chains clinked and Acaadi grimaced. He almost expected to feel the hand of gravity and then the weightlessness. Instead he managed to bring both feet across to the next section. He stepped lightly between the swinging poles and prepared for the long, winding spiral.

That expectation was pulling him down as inexorably as gravity itself. If he didn't let go of it this was only going to get worse. He was determined to succeed, but had started to expect failure. It was a bad combination.

The hissing stopped. The air between the damp old tunnels and the hematically sealed chambers having finally merged. A gloved hand emerged, grasping the door. Those old electronics had failed, but with an unnatural strength something heaved it the rest of the way.

The white armour was cracked, revealing the dull palour of decrepit flesh. The undead troopers made little noise as they stepped out of their pods.

Acaadi felt the danger, his leading foot slipping as he made his first step onto the spiral. His hands waves at thin air and he barely kept his footing.

It wasn't an immediate threat. It was a dark cloud looming on the horizon. He turned to look to his friends: Ura, Amani and Kyra. It was Kyra's expression where he recognised the same feeling.

No answer on the comms, static. Damned. There was no sense of anything from the Jedi Master, nothing that would unsettle the padawans further. If anything there was an overriding sense of calm in the room to help settle everyone. The opposite of a Sith’s technique to heighten tension and one he’d practiced for decades.

Whispering aside to a wildcard, they spoke back and you could see them now arming themselves below. Wildcards were experts at using whatever was to hand, that’s how they were raised in the early days fighting with almost nothing against the odds, even old as they were now they had never forgotten to improvise.

What is it? An old feeling. Very old and familiar somehow. No answer came as he did not know. Only ~This is no sith.~

A faint voice in the force reached all of them in the room. Faint, as Kei was poor at mindspeak, but thankfully very close by. ~Together you are stronger than you ever will be alone. All of you stay together. Look out for each other and stay alive. No heroics. Please.~ The voice instructed and then requested at the end, for they did not know him. He only hoped they had been trained to work together, that life was more important than success.

Two of the now armed and older wildcards stayed in the room to guard the padawans, and would follow them. Two went out one door one way to search, while Kei opened a second doorway into the flickering hallway alone. He paused at the doorway to focus himself, and only as he walked out of sight did his lightsaber fly into his hand, disengaged still but ready, walking into the dark hallways to confront whatever this feeling of danger was. Fine time to be without backup Amadis.

Interacting with: Vertigo Vertigo

The next thing the Gungan found were Houk troopers that were ordered to reinforce Kintan - er... assist in extraction efforts but failed to arrive on time. Nevertheless, whatever civilians did make out of that place alive would not see Kintan again for a while, even if, somehow, these Sith supply lines were cut off. He found it funny that these Houks started eating into the spaghetti reserves, presumably because their own rations may have been distributed to refugees upon arrival at Kwenn Space Station. But they had these oversized trays, with the first spaghetti servings being placed on multiple trays, enough to fill both of these Houks' trays, as they used while at base camp to eat. Especially when one of these servings had a clump of spaghetti big enough to fill a Gungan hand. Meanwhile, the Gungan cooked pho, using a different type of noodle than the spaghetti these Houks loaded onto their trays, acting like mawvorrs in a china shop. And the first batch of pizzas was also fresh out of the oven, too, and sliced before they were placed onto paper plates which, in turn, were on the trays.

"Where you want it?" Vertigo asked the Gungan cook, too busy cooking pho.

"Yousa distribute disen spaghetti and pizza to wounded civilians"

Ura made sure not to mess Acaadi’s attempt up as he went, but she could start to sense that something was... off. It was like something was coming. She hadn’t heard what the master had told Kyra, but what she did notice was that something was getting to her friend in front of her. He nearly slipped, but managed to stay on. This didn’t keep Ura’s eyes from going wide as she wanted to help, but figured that it was part of this course.

“I can see it on you. Is something wro....” Then a voice came through her mind, one saying for everyone to stay together, and not use heroics. It was the master. She looked back at everyone there, worry seeming the bleed off her. “Did you guys hear that?”

Amani was too focused on what was in front of her, and did not notice anything until seeing the reactions of everyone else in the room. Quickly after, she sensed it as well. It was unlike anything she had felt before, and the unknown presence made her wary.

"What is it?" She spoke up, waiting for an answer. The mindspeak came into her head, but did not satisfy her concern. The confusion on the faces of everyone else signified a similar uncertainty. "What is it?"

Their bodies did not remember how to be human, but they had been programmed into death. Their bodies remembered how to be stormtroopers. As they shambles out of their Chambers they moved for the armory, yanking blasters down from the wall.

When a great clang rang out through the warehouse Acaadi lost his balance. He struck his shoulder on another pipe and was swallowed up by the nets again.

There was no way to crawl across a slack net whilst looking dignified, but Acaadi felt they had other problems. When he reached the edge he grabbed it with both hands, slowly rolling over the edge and demonstrating the strength and balance that came with Jedi Training.

"That came from below?"

In the basement an old blast door had opened up. Ten levels below them the undead troopers started to shamble upwards.

Distribute the rations? There was some low grumbling from the rear, but a clear willingness to assist. Houks often spoke at a grumble and today was no different, except the one too busy cleaning his face. The face-cleaner got another lengthy glare from Vertigo, which thankfully for the kitchen didn’t end in further headbuttery.

“Sure.” Vertigo eventually grumbled. The houks continued unloading the ingredients, mounting them up to an impressive degree truth be told. A proper Houk pile, which all things being equal of course looked much bigger than a regular pile. While traces of stolen spaghetti still tarnished our brave Houks they would have an important role in feeding many hungry bellies. That was something Vertigo could appreciate, getting a good meal out to everyone.

“Who gets what.” Vertigo rumbled. He was going to give it to whoever looked hungriest, but everyone even the gungan could use some meat on their bones. They “all look like they could break under a strong breeze,” there was a grumble of agreement from behind him as new food and rations were loaded onto these strange styled pizza delivering mercenaries.

Ruddy 'ell that smelled good. “Can I uh. Have some chow later.” Vertigo said politely, drawn to the stewing pot. Polite because a good meal was being prepared. “What’s in it?” His huge head got a bit closer, leaning over the stewing creation.

"...Acaadi." If there was ever a doubt, it would be evident now that Kyra had a set of lungs on her. The singular word contained both a mix of concern and fear, the demand unspoken but obvious to the Mirialan that knew her well.

Get down here.

The empty warehouse echoed with her call. The murmurs of confused padawans followed after, muffling the noise echoing from ten levels below. Kyra's saber snapped into her hand, urged there by the force. They girl looked warily down the dark corridor from which the Master left them for. A bad feeling sat heavily in her gut. As much as she tried to ignore the force, and as strange as it was for her to admit she was even doing that, the warning that flashed through it was impossible for her to ignore.

"Master?" Came her voice in Kei Amadis Kei Amadis 's head. She was apparently more apt with the skill than he, for he would hear her loud and clear. Strangely enough, her fear crept through too. "I wouldn't do that if I were you."

She didn't expect her warning to be heeded, a fact which left her standing like a deer in headlights on the ground below her friends.

"Something's coming," she breathed, shooting a forlorn look back.

"Can't we ever catch a break?"
