This is not a debate on whether or not the Factory should exist or not, so please don't post "all of it". Violators of this rule will be banned from this thread and removed from this thread's discussion.

Please vote only once. This is a public poll.

Also, if you're willing, please explain your reasoning for your vote. Staff & I will be reading and/or participating in this discussion.

I encourage all Factory Judges to participate as well.

I put company. I would have selected 'all of it' but most have their benefits, I've found.

Company just seems a little superfluous to me. I mean, sure, we don't really need to make new ships and armor and planets and whatnot, but company just always struck me as the least lore-adding of the bunch. At least with ships and armor you can really build and improve on what's already there in canon.

But my ultimate gripe is that 90% of companies do nothing (this statistic is complete hyperbole unless someone checks it and it isn't), and most are redundant.

Some companies do thing but some just sit there or are made for a certain group and never really advance in tier. I have mine for making armor and weapons... tha is all I need and it doesn't need to be higher then tier one

I like all of it, can we not have that option.

Though possibly a unit creation thread would be nice (for wannabe generals)

only thing I am unsure on, is how to alter my company

I don't know how to vote for this one... or if I can even actually vote at all. I find all aspects of the Factory very appealing, and I don't think I've ever had an qualms with any portion of it. I won't call it perfect... if only because undoubtedly by the droves other people will dismiss this sole opinion of mine :p It's a very flexible and easy to work with organism. Now if this were a vote for the most neglected portion, I'd say Factory Discussion... but lol, that's just because people for WHATEVER REASON don't want to frequent there. A few questions are popped in there now and then, and they'll probably be answered, but there doesn't seem to be very many aspects of DISCUSSION going.

There isn't someone popping in once a week to start a whole storm of conversation over some trivial matter concerning lore building.

I don't really think there is much you can do about that though.

I can sorta agree with this, altho' I found they have their uses. One way to actually get the companies more interesting would be to include a barebones economy system for them to work with, but I'll probably be one of the few to actually enjoy seeing something as that added and roleplay an accountant.

Honestly I find Starship creation the most difficult. It seems like a lot of research to me and while I have nothing against that I find it much easier to create, armor, weapons, technology, etc than starships. I suppose it's just a matter of personal preference in my case. Hats off to the people that do create starships and do it on a regular basis.

Oh my goodness. This is going to sound REALLY stupid, but an idea just dawned upon me.

What if... faction's, had to go through a Factory Approval process before being Threaded? It would deal with various balancing issues inherent in invasions, and hopefully absorb the brunt of the angst, because the "negotiation", would instead turn into two leaders mutually creating something that an impartial judge balances accordingly. I feel like a lot could be done for us if our opposing Leaders were working in tandem to create a lore aspect than SOLELY to be defending/expanding their empires.

We could make it a sub-section of Locations as Battlefields!

It could deal with objectives, mini-locations where fights are pre-planned to take place, population caps, reinforcement allowances, fleet allowances! It would solve a lot of problems in my opinion, if there is no doubt at all what the Battlefield is like, and what is already there, in ADDITION to forcing leaders to work together in an invasion rather than against. I feel like it would improve the story of Invasions if people were forced to realize strengths and weakness of their enemies and their own forces by virtue of a judged submission than merely because person x said so.

Sorry if these seems off topic, it just seemed to fit here after you just closing down the last Invasion discussion, and I was quite done idea brain storming.

Gotta say, I love all aspects of the factory, so I will abstain from this vote. Can I do that?

Anyways, here's a suggestion. Remove the factory as we know it and implement solely as a place for Major Factions to field essential, faction related, technology. This way, we can nullify OP unique items that people use to godmod and still keep up to date with technology that may exist 800 years after the prequels.

Just my two cents.

Or do what Fatty said, if we still get the option to submit Battleground ideas even if not imediatly used in a war. Sorta like maps for online games really. I could do that all bloody day.

The OP god mod unique holy shit related items are still going to happen.

That is what Judges are for, that is what the Factory is for.

I actually really like the factory. I check in with factory discussion fairly regularly. Not because I have anything valuable to add as input, but because there are some really interesting questions that pop up that I want to know the answer to. Starships, tech, and company all, for me anyways, add to make the galaxy a more interesting place to write in and I have a better sense of what's going on around.

The biggest issue I have all deals with me and my overachier-ness that leads to multi-thousand word solo dev threads.

I'm agreeing with Sarge and everyone else there on companies. Not that it seems superfluous to me, but that it's really hard to get into and understand all the rules and contracts and everything like that. Once you start, you go through more changes, requirements, and the like, and some of them are a bit confusing. It took me a while to realize i could do contracts with NPCs, rather than just PC-run places.

Although, if I had a second choice, ships would be it. Gun counts are tedious.

[member="sabrina"] Link to the thread for that.

Definately Starships. All dem numbers be no good for me poor brain... especially since I flunked maths in college. >_>

Were I a regular patron of the Factory, I'd most likely not choose to sub starships. Since I'm not, I don't find it a problem, but yeah.

ive spent a considerable amount of time wading through the factory. in both starship and tech, ive been hardballed, ive been worked with, and ive gotten by with a wave and a thumbs up. the factory has evolved a lot since i joined this site, and for the better.

yes, here and there problems pop up. but factory judges have been more approachable lately and most are reasonable. instead of just saying no, now we get the chance to find a middle ground and create something acceptable to both.

now... there is also a bit of a wildcard aspect to the factory. everything is up to the opinion of the judge. what one judge will let through, another will deny on concept. that right there has always been a headache, and likely from both sides. as we all know, opinions cannot be standardized. so... yeah...

ive played with NPC and species subs a bit. and i like how accepting the judges are in that section of the factory. so long as there are no glaring problems with the submission, you typically get through after some minor clarification. and unless you're custom building a biological superweapon, you'll likely never take flak here.

the company factory... its been a long time since ive submitted a request for a tier advancement... but my previous experiences were very frustrating. solo dev threads are a lifesaver in this regard, and I wish that rule had been in play since i joined this site... but... tier 3 to 4 advancement requirements could be cut back a bit. especially when it comes to convincing others to help you write rediculously long threads that they get nothing out of.

otherwise... *shrug* company rules are solid. though an amendment would be nice when it comes to the new fleet limit rule for companies.

1) Allow civilian facilities subbed as locations to not count against fleet size limitations (ie: owning a shipyard or parking a Concordance Mining Barge in an asteroid field as a perminant feature)

2) I accidently ended up in a loophole. I created the mandal hypernautics minor faction because no solid rules for company assets existed at the time... so... i own a company (currently tier 3), that has justification to follow minor faction rules instead. An amendment to cover this loophole would be nice.

tech and starship can be a pain in the butt... starship has actually gotten a lot better from what i can see... though i havent even looked at the tech factory since my last.... incident with that. instant denial is bad. it makes people feel bad. it causes angst. and while nerfing and dev threading can go a long way..... *shrug* i dont know. keep doing what your doing. lines of communication between judges and submitters are open, and so long as you continue to talk with eachother in an attempt to let the writer get their fancy toy, but with fair balances in place... i think your doing just fine and will improve naturally without any real reform needed.

just be nicer about instant denials.

because butthurt.

The only one that's kinda too all-encompassing is tech. Having weapons, random gadgets, vehicles, and droids all in one seems like a bit of a strain on the judges.

The only suggestions I have for that are to specialize tech judges or separate the categories a bit further.

The only other bit I have a problem with is the whole elaborate gun count thing. Too much math for a burned-out fifteen year old...

I RP a company, and I love doing it. I've done a ton with it and use it as the backdrop for most of my Roleplay. That being said, I think the company section of the forum could use some work, and I think inactive companies including the PC ones could/should be cleaned out to make it easier for players to find information. I think right now the main problem with companies is, most people only make them so that they can get their special snowflake tech or so they can say they are rich in character. I think this marginalizes those of us who do roleplay actively with our companies and use the company submissions as a backdrop for some rather interesting roleplays.

Some people start up the idea of a company and then realize its hard to go up in tier and drop it. But honestly tier shouldn't have to be the end all be all. With another alt, I intend to make a company that really can't go past tier three. It is an agricultural company predominantly selling food stuff. But I think it would be neat to use it as a backdrop for some space western threads, and do some real fun RPs with it. Maybe do some other unique stuff with it find some weird canonical plant to raise or something. Point is companies should be about fun and it seems to me a lot of people don't make them to have fun.
