Public Where the Tall Ferns Grow [All Jedi]

XKoBdVx.png

The fall of Coruscant was more than a prelude - it was a blow that rippled across the galaxy, reverberating even in the pastoral corners of Ukatis.

The bulk of the New Jedi Order had scattered. Some headed toward the unknown regions to regroup, but those who remained within Alliance space quickly came to a sobering conclusion; the continued survival of their fragmented order demanded they disseminate among various temples and strongholds within the galaxy.

yeO2UyV.png
Perhaps, new beacons of the Light would rise from the shadows of the Galactic Empire's war machine.

The Jedi temple on Ukatis was no grand structure. Tucked within the rolling hills of farmland stood a building of ancient stonework, mildly dilapidated in places, and covered in moss and vining plants. An old family manor slowly being repurposed into housing.

A swath of old village ruins lay at the foot of the temple, the subject of both fascination and unease to the locals who've seen strange specters lingering among the weathered rubble at night. Behind the temple lays a sprawl of farmland producing crops from the cleansed soil, tended to by temple caretakers.

A thick mist surrounds the temple grounds, shrouding the land from view. Those who follow the Light side of the Force will feel a whisper of a pull guiding their way through the fog - those who follow the Dark, however, will only find disorientation and eventual unconsciousness.

The land itself is enriched in quiet superstition, the sort that sinks into the earth with a quiet hum. Living, breathing, and watchful. Amidst the churn of war, the Ukatian temple stands as a silent refuge for all Jedi, whether they be a delicate youngling, a steward of the people, or a warrior simply passing through.

Suggested Objectives:
  • Parts of the temple are in disrepair. Crumbling stonework needs to be replaced and reinforced on the eastern side of the building, but be careful not to disturb the plants that have taken root over the temple's walls.
  • Locals have reported witnessing strange specters lingering near the ruins of the town at night. Though no harm has been done, they're wary and have suggested the Jedi to investigate.
  • Help tend the fields behind the temple by encouraging the crops to go via plant surge. Excess crops are used to supplement nearby villages.
  • Socialize with your fellow Jedi or local Ukatian villagers.

[This is intended to be a casual, social thread open to all Jedi. Pls no orbital bombardment.]

It'd been a long time since last he was here, longer still considering a temple had been built. Green eyes scanned about, looking over the rebuilt and reused stone. This wasn't a building that could withstand any modern attack just from the looks of it. Was that a bad thing, though? Having the temple on Coruscant be a fortress as it was felt stifling in some ways.

This could be just a good place to relax and breath, for once. Not that he was going to be here long. Too much to fight against in the Empire to make this place more than a visit. His expression softened as he reached out to touch stone, briefly letting the cool moss press to his palm. Plants had become something much more important to him as of late, after nearly loosing what he had saved from the Thousand Fountains.

Not all life from Panatha survived on Niv Hani, but at least not all of it had to remain lost. He stepped away, heading back down towards the town. Now he was more curious if there might be some kind of burger specialty the locals here had. Something he could bring back to Zaiya Ceti Zaiya Ceti , perhaps. Or make himself.

There was a pause in his step. Panic.

".. No, no. I can't cook."

Take out it would have to be.

Uka.... Ukam.... Ukachristmas was cold... the stone was old and covered in mold... the jedi were needing to grow bold. As she walked through it and looked at the others who were here the padawan had a small chance to try and meet others.. ones who were not bound by the edicts of the adults... or if it was all adults she would have the warning to be able to run and get away. She stopped only to look at the plants in the back of the temple and some were trying to get them to grow... that wasn't how you encouraged plants to grow.. you did it the old fashioned way with sweet cream and not threatening naptime. She grew suspicious now... there was something more going on here. "My keen jedi senses are tingling... or it is gas from the in flight snacks."

He wasn’t here to be social.

He wasn’t here for an operation.

He was here to check in on a friend.

He hadn’t seen her since Coruscant. Not out of spite, or choice, or really anything, he just hadn’t. However there was a need to make sure than an old friend was doing okay. Sure, he was in his gear, even if his mask was off, but Connel was not here to fight. That is why Omega Squad was (willingly) setting a perimeter. The Temple needed to be rebuilt in many respects, one call and he could bring assistance, that would be up to her.

Right now, he just wanted to see how she was doing.

Ukatis was beautiful.

It reminded him of home. Of happier days.

It had been decades since Kelan stepped foot in a field, but once a farmboy, always a farmboy. Originally, the Jedi exile had arrived escorting a group of refugees, a cause he had taken to championing since he set foot in Republic space, but at the end of the day, he still held true to his own self-exile. Still, when a call for aid in the fields close to the temple went out, he was one of the few volunteers.

Despite his time away, he took to the task of tending crops rather quickly.

While the force was a useful tool, Kelan had been raised in a tiny farming village on Dantooine that preferred to do things the old-fashioned way. A touch of the force here and there, of course, but you can't substitute good old-fashioned hard work.

Cloak removed, lightsaber tucked away, and shirt removed, the Jedi took up the craft of his family once more. His upper body was a patchwork of scars and past wounds, reminders of the good work he tried to do but also of marks of his penance. Still, he had no issues kneeling in the dirt, hand to the ground to check the condition of the newly-planted crops. He appreciated what the Jedi on Ukatis were doing, caring for the locals by tending to their essential needs. There would always be a need for Jedi to defend the weak, but there was also room for those who simply wanted to make sure good people had enough to eat.

Kelan rose from the dirt, hand extended as the force gave a simple command to the crops: grow.

And grow they did, several rows matured in a few minutes, locals setting to work plucking and cutting to reap the benefits. Still, Kelan wasn't about to make things too easy on himself as he also went to help collect the crops. Even with the force, it was hard work, but in the end, it was worth it in his mind.

"Alright, this basket is full. Make sure this gets divided fairly; there should be enough for the local villages."

"Of course, Master Jedi."

Kelan wanted to contradict the title, but in the end, he let it go as he took a break, drinking from a canteen of water as he leaned against a stone wall, looking out over the idyllic countryside of Ukatis.

He would have liked to stay forever.

But this was not to be.

MAKKO

Makko leaned back in the chair, a thin stack of papers spread across the wooden desk in front of him.

Most were simple enough; names, ages, a scattering of half-formed hopes from families on Ukatis who thought the Jedi might offer their children a life beyond court intrigue and noble obligations. He skimmed through them one by one, thumb scrolling absentmindedly while his brow furrowed.

He was reading through the applicants to the enclave. He didn't know how he was supposed to decide who to interview. The enclave was actually a sense of pride for a world that had seen dark times. Makko watched the holonet closely.

One entry caught his eye: a younger sibling, applying on behalf of their sister without her knowledge. There were few from the lower classes. Makko would need to talk to Cora about that. There has to be more with natural taken in the Force here on Ukatis who weren't aware of the opportunity. Commoners were welcome. Those who felt the pull of the light side might find their way here, but Makko preferred to take direct action.

He set the papers aside and rose, stretching the stiffness from his shoulders. For all the paperwork, he wasn't built to sit still for long.

Sliding the last application into the pile, he stepped out into the hall, hands tucked into his pockets. Makko walked out into the courtyard and paused a moment, scanning the common area with that careful, street-trained eye. There was no danger here. Just people trying to rebuild.

"Alright. Anyone need help with anything?"

Ukatis. It had been a long time since Reina had been on the planet. Back when she was normal. When things seemed so much simpler. Someone could just point her at a city and tell her to defend it, and she would. But now she knew it wasn't that simple. That life wasn't as simple as she wanted it to be. She wasn't even who she used to be in that moment, but that wasn't what Reina was focused on right now.

Instead she was out by the fields, doing her best to deal with the crops. It was the least she could do to try and repay Cora for helping teach Reina how to use plant-surge. It wasn't something that the newly-turned Ersansyr had used in particular if she was honest to herself. Especially now, with her love for the sea having only further grown. But that didn't mean she wouldn't go out of her comfort zone for someone else as she stepped amongst the crops, feeling the gentle tugs of the Force around her.

And so Reina just focused on encouraging the plants to grow, gently breaking out into a soft song under her breath. She had found that singing somewhat helped her when it came to using the Force. Perhaps it was because of her new vocal chords. The way her voice carried on the wind, or the fact that her voice seemed to just naturally carry the Force in it...either way, she worked on growing the crops, making sure they'd grow.

"Padawan war journal entry five thousand and.... like I know how to count more then I have fingers and toes. On Ukatis this morning, dust of the remote Jedi temples rocks still on my boots, surrounded by robed grown-ups prepping for their oh-so-serious meeting. The temple here's all stone and echoes, like the Force forgot how to sparkle. There is buzzing in the air but I sense a dire lack of snacks. Operation: Ukatis Uproar is a go."

Akela moved towards the temples hallways avoiding Makko Vyres Makko Vyres and Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor they were adults and smelled. She could feel the Force nudging her toward the kitchen annex someone was hiding cookies likely the blonde Corazona von Ascania Corazona von Ascania , Akela knew it, the old lady knew it and the force knew it.... maybe mysterious and all that like who puked in the fish tank in the younglings quarters after having all of the chocolate. As she moved she Used Snack Summoning to sniff out a stash of blue milk biscuits behind a ceremonial urn

"lame hiding spot, Master Stick-in-the-Mud. I figured out the secret panel when I was five." She said it as the sound of more adults was there... she could feel it in her bones and her stealth powers were on recharge. "Deploying Glitter Storm." To throw off the local droids and jedi guarding the hall sparkles rained, they squealed, total distraction win. Allowing Akela to sneak out of the temple area. She paused as she snuck outside and looked at the garden... the person there.

Reina Daival Reina Daival was doing something with the plants but to try and get past her she needed to prepare the counter she would launch with Puppy-Eye Parry, "Oh hi.... "I liberated totally didn't swiped three biscuits and a bag of gummy worms. I will give them to you id you don't say anything about seeing me on my super special awesome, limited time exclusive extra cool mission."

"I've only just realized that we've not had the chance to speak in more...peaceable circumstances."

Cora's voice emanated softy from behind Connel. Though weakened, she still had a smile for him. A genuine one.

They were far from the battlefield, but the upkeep of the enclave had kept her busy. Makko, ever the watchful husband, had urged her to leave the more political dealings of Ukatis to the king, but she still couldn't let go entirely. Not when her world had burned twice.

But the galaxy was burning, too. Countless lives had been lost in the defense of Coruscant, including that of Connel's father.

"It's good to see you, Connel," she spoke quietly, as though lifting her voice would cause strain. Cora peered up at him – she always had, given his height – but this time she had to crane her neck just a few degrees further given the limitations of her hover chair. "And omega squad, as well. I'm glad to see you all survived."

At the base of the eastern wall, Mykel walked the line of crumbling masonry alongside two Ukatian stonemasons from the nearby village and Knight Seris Kaelren of the NJO Service Corps. As Cora's new enclave was meant to serve as both a refuge and a learning center, Mykel figured the renovation effort offered the perfect opportunity for a little construction technology transfer.

Of course, he was no construction expert himself. In matters of masonry, he deferred to Seris and the experienced hands beside him. However, he was adept with all the tools for scanning and analysis, which he thought would make a huge difference in accelerating the progress of the restoration project.

When they reached the center of the wall, Mykel paused and slipped a gloved hand into his satchel. From inside, he withdrew three small silvery orbs, then he tossed them straight up into the air. For a few moments they continued to sail upwards from the strength of his initial throw, but suddenly jerked to a halt mid-air as their micro repulsons activated. They zipped overhead like flies for a bit before finally settling into a precise formation before the wall, projecting wide pale blue beams as they glided from side to side at staggard elevations.

The younger journeyman, a lanky blonde teen named Teren, let out a whistle, tilting his head back to track the drones.

"Incredible! And you said these orbs will save us time on assessment?"

Mykel nodded. "Definitely. Mr. Veynar, how long do you reckon a traditional assessment takes?"

The elder master stonemason, Daelic Veynar, let out an audible tongue click as his bespectacled gaze moved over the craggly stone. "With damage this extensive...a simple visual inspection alone would take a day or so. Then another week with our tools to really know what we're working with." Just from a single glance alone with his experienced eyes, Daelic wagered that the wall in its current sorry state was one strong gust away from collapse.

The Jedi smirked. "What if I told it could all be done with these drones in as little as ten minutes?"

Daelic's eyes widened. After a few moments of stunned silence, he let out a chuckle and a smile of his own. "Well, then I'd say we're due for an early visit to the tavern tonight."

When he heard her voice, it sounded “weak”.

Not weak in a derogatory sense.

Like she had been through Mustafar.

When he turned around though, Connel had to look down to see her… in that hoverchair. If he was one to do so, he would have cried. He felt a pang of sorrow, not for her physical state but for the toll life had taken on her. Despite her weakened appearance, her spirit seemed unbroken, and her determination shone through. Connel found himself silently admiring her resilience.

Oh, kiddo… what did they do to you? He was protective of the royal, not that she couldn’t handle herself, but he had since that day they talked down a mob.

He was not responsible for this and knew it, but felt like a failure.

The mist clung to his robes as though it had a will of its own, cool and heavy in the morning air. Aiden Porte pressed his palm against the weathered stone of the eastern wall, feeling how it trembled under its own age. The old manor was no grand citadel, there were no soaring spires, no durasteel buttresses gleaming in the sun. But in the moss-veined cracks and the stubborn roots clutching to the wall, he felt something older, something resilient.

He shifted the crate of tools at his side and knelt, setting chisel to mortar where the crumbling had grown worst. Each strike was measured, his focus split between the rhythm of repair and the quiet hum of the Force running through the stone. Beneath his fingers, the vines responded, curling back just enough to give him space, as if recognizing the care in his intent.

Other Jedi and villagers worked nearby. Their laughter rang out when a stone slipped and landed in the mud, their voices carrying through the fog like flickers of light in the gray. Aiden took comfort in that. The galaxy beyond was tearing itself apart, but here, on Ukatis, they could build, even if only a single wall at a time.

Straightening, he drew in a breath of damp, clean air. His eyes swept across the ruins of the village down below, where villagers spoke of specters and strange shapes in the dark. Perhaps there would be answers waiting there tonight. For now, his task was simpler. He raised his hand, letting the Force surge through him, guiding the stones into place as though the temple itself wished to stand again.

"Hold fast," he murmured under his breath, unsure whether he meant it for the wall, the temple, or himself. "We're not finished yet."

As promised, the scanning process only took about ten minutes, also accounting for the repair work already initiated on other sections of the wall by additional construction teams ( Aiden Porte Aiden Porte ). Mykel shared a datapad with the stonemasons, displaying a composite rendering of all the layers of the wall, sections color coded by default according to severity of stress levels. There was a lot of red.

While the technology was new to Daelic, the seasoned stonemason caught on quickly. Mykel had thoughtfully adjusted the interface to resemble a traditional handmade blueprint, but with the enhancement to freely manipulate the digital rendering in 3D as they pleased.

"By the Maker...that's a clever contrivance. May I stencil my own marks upon it?"

"Of course," Mykel produced a stylus, doodling a smiley face on the display. In the real world, the orbs superimposed that very same smiley face over the outer wall. Its appearance made Teren laugh.

"The program will recall any and all notes you make and can project them accordingly with the orbs. You can make use of the projections alone or use them as a tracing guide for your chalks and paints."

Daelic nodded along, considering the future implications of such analytic tools. So much tedium had been eliminated in one swoop, leaving him free to focus on the more enjoyable bits of masonry.

"I already have a prescription in mind thanks to this. For now we put up timber braces to steady the wall - we've already brought out two carts full of them today, though I knew not where to best mount them until now. That we can have done before sundown, and wall will live to see another day. However, for the long keeping, we have a problem. These roots run deep into the wall's bones, but the Lady has requested we not to cut them out. So it's best bore out some channels ease the strain, then cut new stone around them. Yet, the progress will be quite slow in comparison."

"Hmm, why don't we make the roots work for us?" Mykel offered. "It wouldn't be too hard to realign the roots to function as an additional mode of support, like a natural mesh."

Daelic would have never considered that an option, as no hammer or chisel could easily bend roots to such a purpose, but this morning alone he had already seen the Jedi perform incredible feats with vegetation that was essentially magic to him. His mind was now open to the possibilities.

"If you can make such a thing a reality, then it would indeed spare us much labor. Well then, show me what you can do."

She stopped mid-song, raising an eyebrow at the attempt of puppy dog eyes being used to trick her. It wouldn't work eactly. Reina wasn't as vulnerable to that look as most people. But fortunately for Akela, Reina didn't quite care. She wasn't a Knight. She didn't exactly have any responsibility or hold any position above the Togruta. So instead, Reina just shrugged her shoulders, shoving her thumb behind herself to tell her to get out of here. Just because Reina was more willing to let this go unseen, doesn't mean there are other people who would be okay with it.

"Get goin' then kid. I never saw you. I'm too focused on tidying up here. No-one told me I'd have to look out for anyone trying to sneak off so..."

She shrugged once more at that. The usage of bribes and sweets would have worked if Reina had been more stubborn but hey. Jedi could handle themselves at the end of the day. Reina just turned her attention back over towards the planets, trying to encourage them to grow once more. She had to be useful.

THis one was different, upset, moody.... emotional.... In short a teenager with attitude but that made us kindrred spirits, allies in the eternal war against the adults. "Hold up! Hold up! You are not working for the adults?" I had to ask her... I had to be sure if she could be trusted she had resisted my puppy eyes and sweets... that is a level of power few have. It is dangerous, like a wookie with lice. "Cause I see in your eyes the same fire that drives the heart of me." Akela was looking at her and spoke as she starred out at the planet. "The adults would tell us to abide the rules, to adhere to the concepts of nap time, pants time and math time... I think they are just making up times and there are others. Padawans not brainwashed to their rhetoric, wants to seek freedom for us, liberation forr snacks and above all... shiny things." I appealed or tried to appeal to her sense of justice, of rightness in the galaxy... she could be an invaluable person in the eternal crusades of the padawan menace, a sidekick to carrry on the name of Zak Dymo and Akela Ru should we fall to the dangers and lure of puberty. "I know we just met and I know that you have no reason to trust me.... but I was willing to give you a portion of my sugar stash I took from the old ladies stash... so I know I can be trusted. The question is what do you want to do padawan whose name I never learned cause she wouldn't tell me."
