Hidden away on the streets of Denon, the Blue Flame tavern lay dormant for those who were curious enough to wander in. Lately, it has been quieter due to many Darkwire members going off the radar after the chaos that ensued from their actions. Some still came in now and then due to its obscurity, but nowadays it was mainly local patrons who sat around chatting amongst themselves. It was a shame to see, yet that was the price they had to pay for turning into terrorists.

Even with that considered, The Blue Flame still survived and continued to bring in stowaways who didn't belong in society.

Alone at the bar, a young individual sat with a fresh strawberry milkshake in front of him at the counter. His stylish ginger hair was distinctive to the people of Denon, a symbol of both justice and destruction. The people loved and the Corpo's despised him during his Darkwire days. But now, he had just been reduced back to a kid who was trying to survive in this harsh galaxy. Leaving quietly from the group he used to call family, Cartri had since reopened an orphanage for the children of Denon and left it in the capable hands of a charity who were proven to be trustworthy in such matters.

However, old ways still didn't leave him.

He kept screwing over the Corpo scum and taking things for himself to keep going. Today's job was no exception, and for the first time in a while, Cartri seemed to acquire something quite exceptional. Two high-profile criminal empires had met in a downtown factory for a trade deal, one that included weapons, drugs, and everything in between. There was also another item, the jewel of the whole package, an ancient Jedi holocron that had been lost from the Jedi order for years. The chances of getting such a thing were slim, yet when talks broke down and blaster fire started erupting, it was one of the simplest snatch and grabs he could have done.

All he had to do was jump down from his hiding spot, shroud the factory in darkness, and nab the triangle object within a few seconds.

Before they knew what hit them, Cartri was already far away from the factory and sat down in the blue flame looking at potential buyers on a datapad. He didn't know what the hell it did, but Cartri was certain it was going to fetch a pretty credit...

"Nice catch."

Valery had appeared by his side like a ghost, unseen by any of the patrons until she was already there, standing next to Cartri. A Jedi trick, perhaps? Nobody would know, and she was sure her quiet entrance meant that people remained focused on their own drinks and business.

"It has been a long time, Cartri," Valery continued with a smile, her eyes focused on the bartender, rather than the man himself. She did not want to stand out, and she knew that she would if she didn't address the barkeep for a drink. When he finally made his way over, she offered a kind smile and spoke, her voice soft yet firm, "Alderaanian red, please." She dipped her head, watched him depart, then finally turned to Cartri.

"I hope you didn't get yourself into too much trouble for that?"

She grinned and ran a hand up through her hair.

It was good to see him again.

Upon hearing her voice, Cartri almost jumped out of his skin. If it wasn't for his quick reactions, the poor lad would have been looking to gather himself on the floor. Thankfully, that wasn't the case, and after he had swiftly turned off the datapad, Cartri looked around him to find that most of the patrons were still chatting amongst themselves. Even in here, he didn't want to cause a scene. It was in his best interests to keep calm and collected with Valery here.

"Valery? uh... It's good to see you again!" Cartri responded with a defeated expression. It had been a long time since they last spoke, the Jedi temple being the last time. They had no reason to meet again since then, so why now out of all days? Then, the reason soon dawned on him. While watching over the meeting from his perch, the gangsters kept insisting that the holocron was quite a valuable asset and used that to push for more credits.

How on Denon did she knew about the meeting was beyond him. Either way, Cartri needed to try and act cool and compose himself. Looking ahead, he casually took a sip of his drink.

"Sorry Valery, but I'm too sure what you're saying. I think buying a milkshake at a bar is perfectly fine, especially when it has been a long day..."

"Uh-huh."

Valery didn't even look at him and just smiled, the corners of her lips tugging up with amusement. No matter how much he tried to hide it, she could feel how he shifted in the Force. First, his shock when she appeared, then his nervousness when she mentioned a nice catch. He knew that she knew, but he wasn't quite ready to admit that yet.

Perhaps he hoped she was bluffing.

"I wasn't talking about milkshakes, Cartri." Finally, Valery turned to face the young man, that same smile on her lips. Just to let him know that she knew things that had not been said yet.

After a pause, she continued.

"It's not easy to find a buyer for them, hm?"

"Yea..." Cartri eventually groaned out, knowing full well that he had been caught red-handed.

There was no way he could hide his guilt, let alone get away now. Valery is a Jedi master with years of fighting under her belt, a ginger kid trying to make a quick getaway wouldn't make her break a sweat. The smart thing to do was to give up before things got worse, especially considering the history the pair of them had.

He didn't want to throw the second chance back in her face by doing something stupid.

"Many of the buyers I normally sell to declined even putting in an offer. Apparently, it was too hot for them to hold." Cartri remarked, a small sigh leaving his mouth as he looked back to Valery, "Now I see what they mean." Throughout his time on Denon, he had sold multiple holocrons to dealers. This one, however, was somewhat of an oddity.

"How did you even know of the meeting? I only knew about it by ha- I mean by an anonymous tip," he admitted with a shake of his head.

"You weren't at the meeting either."

"I have my ways," Valery said, keeping her methods a secret to be a little mysterious. Or, perhaps, just practical. She gained intel in many different ways — from the SIA, to collecting it herself out in the field — and she wasn't just going to give all of that up.

"Holocrons will definitely draw attention, but they can be dangerous, too." She wasn't sure how much he knew about these devices, but those touched by the Dark Side could put one's life at risk. Holocrons have been known to corrupt minds, take over bodies, or drive people mad just by being near them.

She knew better than to underestimate them.

"Do you just try to sell them?" she asked after a moment, "Or have you tried to look at what's inside of them as well?"

"Fine then, keep your secrets," Cartri replied, his eyes briefly rolling at how lucrative the Jedi had always been. Knowing her, she probably had a tip from somewhere and followed him back here from the scene of the crime. It was annoying to say the least, but at least the sword of the Jedi confronted him compared to a mob boss threatening to dangle him from the nearest roof.

Criminals didn't mess around; Jedi, on the other hand, were more civil. If Cartri played his cards right, there was a possibility of talking his way out.

"As far as I'm concerned, holocrons are quite harmless, let alone useless," he said with one last slurp of his milkshake. Placing it back on the counter, he tilted his head to Valery with some confusion. "I've tried to open them with a crowbar a few times and even set them on fire to see if I could get in. That was a waste of time in the end..."

Looking down at the floor where his bag was, Cartri hesitantly opened his hand and began slowly pulling it out using the force. The holocron was in the shape of a square, covered lavishly in a gold-like tint. A light blue glow radiated from inside, and whenever anyone seemed to touch it, a sense of calm washed over the holder in response.

Hovering it over the table, he placed it in front of him, away from Valery's reach for now.

"What's so special about this one?" Cartri briefly grinned. "Will it take my soul and leave me trapped in a little box till the end of time?"

Valery's eyes followed the holocron as it floated to the table. She did not reach for it. Instead, she leaned back slightly in her chair and let out a soft chuckle at Cartri's joke.

"Actually, I have come across holocrons that nearly drove people to madness," she said with a calm but serious tone. "One man lost his grip on reality entirely. He ended his life before anyone could help him. All because he kept listening to what was inside." Her eyes lingered on the holocron for a moment longer before shifting back to him.

"So yes, some of them really can destroy you. But not all. There are holocrons that teach, ones that offer wisdom from long-dead Masters. The problem is, you never know what kind you have until it is opened."

She folded her arms across her chest and gave him a knowing look.

"And they cannot be cracked open with tools or fire. Only through the Force. That is the key to unlocking them. Anything else, and you are just holding a very expensive paperweight."
