GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

  • Gravity: Standard
  • Climate: Tropical across the entire planet. Warm to mild all year round. There are no seasons outside of the wet and dry season. During the wet season there are tropical storms.
  • Terrain: Velar is 75% water and 25% land. Its many islands feature tropical beaches and coastlines while the larger islands also have dense jungle interiors and small rivers. Most of the islands have some sort of settlement on them.
  • Atmosphere: Type I
  • Planet Size: 14,000 km diameter.

LOCATION INFORMATION

  • Capital City: Sultar — a grand harbor city located on the planet’s largest island in the Velar Archipelago, it was the pride of the natives until Ostell arrived to claim his fief. It has been heavily developed since.

Planetary Features:

  • Velar Archipelago — the largest and most settled island chain on the planet. It is home to Sultar and about half of the planet’s population. The islands are connected by a series of bridges, shuttles and water transport.
  • Ostell’s Palace — located in Sultar, this massive ornate structure towers over the city. Heavily guarded, it is a beautiful reminder of who is really in charge.
  • Military Headquarters — located near Ostell’s palace and nearly as ornate, this is where all the decisions are made for Ostell’s Imperial Remnant.
  • Choktar Archipelago — a smaller island chain that is used to house most of the enslaved native population. It is heavily garrisoned to prevent any revolt.
  • The Deep — Velar's deepest ocean trench, thousands of meters below the surface. The location is where Ostell's most profitable and most hidden operation (deep ocean mineral extraction) happens using forced labor. The environmental damage is significant and deliberately kept from public view.

FORCE NEXUS

  • N/A

POPULATION

  • Native Species: Nautolan
  • Immigrated Species: Human
  • Population: Moderate: ~700 million (total)
    • ~200 million Nautolan
    • ~500 million Human
  • Demographics: Mostly human with an isolated Nautolan populations. Humans are the ruling class. They are free civilians, administrators and military personnel. The Nautolans do most of the hard labor such as construction or fishing and mining operations.
  • Primary Languages: Galactic Basic — enforced by Ostell though some Nautolans continue to speak their language in secret.
  • Culture: Human and Imperial — Ostell has done his best to destroy the Nautolan culture though some still practice old traditions in secret on the Choktar Archipelago.

GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY

  • Government: Autocracy — Ostell has absolute power though he occasionally delegates tasks to his subordinates.
  • Affiliation: Ostell’s Imperial Remnant (though soon to fall under the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant)
  • Wealth: High — the mineral extraction, marine harvests and tourism generate significant revenue that flows directly to Ostell.
  • Stability: Medium — though Ostell’s forces maintain a tight grip, the natives have not entirely given up on revolting.
  • Freedom & Oppression: The levels of freedom and oppression depend entirely on if you are a human or not. Human citizens are given certain freedoms though they are all still subject to Ostell’s rule. The native Nautolans have no freedoms and no rights.

MILITARY & TECHNOLOGY

  • Military: Velar is heavily militarized with dozens of bases scattered all over the planet. It also has 300 W-165 Planetary Turbolaser cannons located on various islands around the planet. However, the planet’s main defense comes from its powerful defensive fleet consisting of his flagship OSS Triumph, seven Imperial II Class Star Destroyers, and eighteen Cruisers and Frigates. They are supported by a variety of standard TIE models based on the planet or on the ships of the defensive fleet.
  • Technology: Galactic Standard / Standard Imperial Technology

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Old Republic:
Before the Clone Wars during the days of the Old Republic, a single Nautolan scout ship from Glee Anselm discovered Velar. They were on a mission to chart distant worlds that could support a large Nautolan population. After charting the planet from orbit and landing to observe planetary conditions they sent word back to their homeworld recommending the planet for settlement. The government set out a call. Adventurous Nautolans answered. Many were young or poor searching for new opportunities in the Outer Rim. Because of their background many hoped to live humble yet comfortable lives on their new planet and so carefully set up their settlements to avoid damaging the environment. The vast majority of the towns that would later grow into cities were built along the coastlines and in shallow waters, reflecting the Nautolan preference for proximity to the ocean. As an amphibious species equally comfortable on land and in water, their settlements naturally bridged both environments. They settled on the Velar Archipelago first, since it had the largest island it seemed like the ideal place to build their capital and first city. Sultar was built with support from the Old Republic, who also provided aid and resources to the planet for multiple years until the start of the Clone Wars.

The Clone Wars, Empire and New Republic:
Velar fell of the radar when the Clone Wars began, an Outer Rim colony was deemed not important enough to view in the context of a galactic civil war. The Velarians managed just fine. Most of their settlements were already established they were starting to trade more with fellow Outer Rim planets than their homeworld itself. In addition, the Nautolan settlers had started to form their own culture unique from their homeworld. So when the Clone Wars concluded and the Empire became established, Velar quietly broke from Glee Anselm and actually covertly supported the Rebel Alliance during their fight against the Empire. They made the right choice, the Empire fell leaving the victorious Rebels and the New Republic to rule the galaxy. Velar was offered a Senate seat but politely declined preferring to maintain independence, though they maintained good relations with the New Republic. The era of the New Republic was good to Velar as the planet continued to prosper and develop. The towns had become cities and the planet received visitors occasionally. There were a few scares such as the Thrawn’s Return and the First Order but those battles stayed away from the planet leaving it untouched.

The NIO:
Velar was a mere blip on the NIO’s radar, relatively small population and few resources. It was logged then they moved on. Ostell was given the planet as his fief after the battle of Harrun IV, though the task of subjugation was up to him. The then Vice Admiral happily obliged, greedy to turn the planet into his luxury paradise. His fleet invaded the planet and its helpless inhabitants. The Velarians had no fleet and their army was small, it was an easy victory for Ostell. It didn’t take long for the fighting to conclude and the massacre to begin. In a slaughter that took multiple months Ostell’s forces killed over half of the population and enslaved the rest transferring them all to the Choktar Archipelago to work as forced labor in the planet’s reconstruction and Ostell’s new deep sea mining ventures. The natives tried a few revolts, but each was put down more brutally than the last.

Current Day:
Today Velar is exactly what Ostell wanted, a paradise. The Velar Archipelago gleams under the tropical sun, Sultar's harbor busy with his military and commercial traffic, his palace towering over the city as a beautiful reminder of who is in charge. The turquoise water is as perfect as it ever was. The beaches are pristine. The jungle interiors are untouched.

On the Choktar Archipelago it is different. The surviving Nautolans, approximately 200 million, a fraction of what they were, work the mines, the fishing operations and whatever else Ostell requires. They are watched constantly. Their revolts have been crushed. Their culture has been systematically suppressed. But not entirely destroyed. In the darkness of the Choktar nights the old language is still spoken. The old ceremonies still practiced. The old hope still maintained, quiet, persistent, the specific stubborn survival of a people who crossed the galaxy to find somewhere safe and found something else instead. They are still waiting for something to change.

Something is about to change. First Scouting Squadron has been given their orders and the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant is determined to liberate this planet once and for all.
