Basic Information:
  • Age: 58
  • Species: Human
  • Gender: Male
  • Height: 1.80 meters
  • Weight: 95 kg
Physical Description:

Ostell is a heavyset man in his late fifties. The years of fiefdom comfort are visible in his build. He is larger than his days with the NIO. He has the specific softness of someone who stopped being a soldier and started being a ruler. He has grey hair worn short and a face that carries the weathered lines of a career officer alongside the particular fullness of someone who has eaten well for a long time.

He wears a modified Grand Admiral’s uniform. It has more gold than needed and is tailored perfectly. The uniform is immaculate everyday. He dosen’t work on it. He has staff for that.

He carries himself with the specific bearing of someone who has been the most important person in every room for long enough that he no longer considers whether this is true. It simply is. He is Grand Admiral Varen Ostell and he has earned everything around him.

He believes this completely.

Inventory:

  • Gold Plated SE-14r light repeating blaster — a custom model of the Imperial Model. He carries it wherever he goes and doesn’t hesitate to show it off. It is one of many in his personal collection.
  • Command Baton — an ornate gold staff with a large ruby at the end. Its supposed to be only for formal occasions. He uses it for staff meetings.
  • A Signet Ring — his fiefdom is ruled by his family. Each member has a ring with the family crest for official documents or letters.
  • OSS Triumph — an Allegiance Class Battlecruiser that doubles as Ostell’s personal palace. It’s interior has been extensively modified to fit grand halls and luxurious officer quarters.
Personality and Beliefs:

Ostell is a man who has confused comfort with competence for so long that the distinction no longer exists for him. He is intelligent and cunning— genuinely so, which makes everything else worse. A stupid man who convinced himself of his own greatness would be merely pathetic. Ostell is smart enough to construct an entirely convincing internal architecture of justification for everything he has ever done and call it wisdom.

In public he is charming in the specific way of someone who has spent decades managing people — warm when he needs to be, firm when the situation demands it, generous with praise and economical with accountability. His officers like him. His staff fear him in the comfortable way of people who know exactly where the lines are and have learned not to cross them.

Behind closed doors he changes. He is still intelligence and cunning, but the mask of charm disappears. He can be cruel and unbothered by it. The charm is a resource he deploys when needed. Behind closed doors there is no need. There is only Ostell and what Ostell requires.

Strengths:

  • “Political Figure” — Ostell did not build his fiefdom through luck. He is a genuine political operator, able to read rooms, manage competing interests, identify leverage points and exploit them before anyone realizes what is happening. He turned the chaos of the NIO's collapse into personal opportunity with the specific efficiency of someone who had been preparing for exactly this possibility without admitting it. His fiefdom functions because he makes it function.
  • “Career Survivor” — Ostell has been an Imperial Officer for over thirty years. During that time he has survived countless battles and used his increasing leverage to gain ever more resources. He is patient and cunning and understands that the main threat is rarely the obvious one.
  • “Cunning” — Ostell is genuinely intelligent. It was why he was able to rise so far up the ranks and how he got the assets he did. He knows how to socially manipulate and his veteran experience makes him a capable battlefield commander.
Weaknesses:

  • “Arrogance” — Ostell is smart, but he is also arrogant which blinds him. It has cost him important battles such as Harrun IV. He only managed to survive thanks to his political maneuvering.
  • “Corrupt” — Ostell works for himself above everything else. He promotes based on loyalty. He hoards assets for his fief and refuses to help other Imperial Remnants. He ensures his systems are prosperous only so he can collect more revenue for himself. His flagship looks more like a palace than a warship.
  • “Short Sighted” — Ostell acts mostly on short term gratification. His battle cruisers under construction remain his only long term plan.
Historical Information:

Varen Ostell spent thirty years climbing the Imperial Navy's ranks through a combination of genuine tactical competence and exceptional political instinct. He understood early that wars were won in briefing rooms as much as battlefields and conducted himself accordingly. By his mid forties he was a Vice Admiral — one of the youngest in the NIO at the time. He considered this appropriate.

Harrun IV was an unfortunate engagement. The intelligence was faulty. The enemy strength was unexpected. A Commander in his task force created confusion in the chain of command at a critical moment. These things happen in war. His after action report reflected the facts as he understood them. He moved on.

When the NIO collapsed he moved faster than most. Three systems secured before anyone thought to object. A fleet assembled from loyal officers and salvaged assets. The title of Grand Admiral — self appointed, but titles require someone to dispute them and nobody did. He named his flagship the Triumph because that is what it was.

His fiefdom is prosperous. His fleet is growing. His battle cruisers will be finished within the year. He is untouchable.

He has not thought about the Ensign who requested a transfer after Harrun IV.

He should have.
