History

Varick is the eldest of three children born to a relatively unknown family on the planet of Stewjon. The family was part of the working class and treated as any working-class family would have been under the rule of an oppressive government. Despite the conditions imposed upon them by their class, Varick watched as their father somehow pressed through it and rose above where they were ‘meant’ to be. When he was not working, Ubba trained himself and his two sons to fight as warriors. He was determined that his sons would not be forced into manual labor. From an early age they trained rigorously, until the day the change first came upon them.

The change was something they had been warned about and were, in fact, expecting. Their mother was a Lupine, but that mattered little to siblings as they were the only ones they were aware of. The wolf inside of them was strong; passed from generation to generation down the entire family line, and it would continue through them to their own children. Their parents kept them as close to them as possible, always on the family farm, or in the nearby forests, until they learned to control their gifts.

For Varick, the change and the control over his beast came as naturally as breathing. It was on some levels, a degree of freedom he knew he’d have no other way considering the strictures of life on Stewjon. Racing through the forests under the light of the moon and hunting alongside his siblings was the most peaceful he ever felt, aside from willingly and even gleefully ignoring his parents’ directives by teaching Alwine how to fight. His younger sister was a petite little spitfire whom he adored endlessly, much to her occasional chagrin, alongside Gerwald, were the only two beings he trusted implicitly.

As the years passed, Varick and Gerwald found themselves among the warriors of Stewjon as their father had always intended for them. There were granted a better standard of living as compared to those who were forced to work, until the night the terrors came, and on their heels, the Confederacy itself. Varick had given though to leaving with them, alongside Gerwald and Alwine, to forge a new life entirely their own.

In the end, however, it was only Gerwald that left, with one of the strange Lupines the Confederacy had amongst their ranks, leaving his siblings behind to manage on their own. The bitterness in Varick ate away slowly at his spirit, tainting it bit by bit, but Alwine’s ferocity and pain left the village food barns aflame and so many food stocks utterly destroyed. It was her discovery and capture that led him down the darker path he still treads now, his position and status leaving him unable to protect his sister from the barbarous and archaic methods she was tortured with as regarded her ‘witchcraft”.

But she held strong, and Varick could do no less for her. Much as he wanted to inform his brother of what the judges and officials were doing to their sister, and what was happening to their family, Alwine herself refused to let him. She was a pillar of burgeoning rage that remained tightly controlled, and she kept her wolf hidden for the safety of the entire family.

He remained. Waited. Watched. Varick did what he could for Alwine, which wasn’t much; a handsome face that once bore an easy smile could do so no longer, and he silently, almost daily, cursed his brother for leaving and not looking back.

Until, one night, he did. Gerwald returned with the might of the Confederacy at his back, with another Lupine holding his leash. By morning, Varick and Alwine were free and their oppressors were dead at their feet. This time, they left with Gerwald, and joined the Confederacy themselves.

Varick, however, did not remain long. He wandered the galaxy, mastering his gifts and honing his skills under the tutelage of those willing to teach, taming the rage he left Stewjon with until it was nothing more than a tool to keep at his disposal.
