Updating the Songsteel Challenge

We all know the challenge (and I would link if nit for this infernal phone!) and I've noticed that the challenge asks for one specific form of writing. Rhyme the last word of every other sentence. But I've seen (and even been one) people not do that, but write it in lyrical form. Sometimes even Haiku.

So I suggest the challenge be changed from specifically one form of rhyme to any form of rhyme. Or at least be stated that way.

That would certainly make for better rhyming
To write in couplets gives better timing
It's not much easier, but far more fun.
And we can finish the rhymes with an occasional pun.

Though the old way is certainly charming
I would like to make the odd limerick
What a fantastic way that would be to provide harming.
*Something something* candlewick

You suggest a simple method
Can be worked around and over.
I believe the path you're headed
Is simply laziness in literature form.

Rhyming words is indeed quite easy
If you take the time to learn and try.
In fact this was written quickly in breezy
Conditions from within my car.

My oppression is but a figment of your imagination
Take a moment and see you truly are free.
Any chains or locks or binds are but a compilation
Of an overworked mind forcing itself to one knee.

Stand upon your own two feet
And understand there are no limitations.
Pick up the pen and ink and beat,
Shake off the weight of selfmade walls.

In the current, every other sentence has to rhyme.
Which is certainly fine most of the time.
However, sometimes we would like to rhyme AA and BB
Rather than AB AB, you see?

It is not a question of removing the rhyme itself, but allow more variation in structure.
The rhyme is essential to the challenge, lest it would be lacklustre.

It is the rhyme that gives the challenge popularity.
So let us not take that away.
But give us the chance to make variation and vitality.
That is really all I have to say.

I do believe the way in which the challenge is currently written allows for a bit more free-form interpretation for the use of rhyming.

At the end of the day, what judges are looking for is a good solid effort made on the part of the challenger. Doesn't matter what poetic style it's written in.

If I remember correctly, there actually is a 'legitimate' word that rhymes with orange. Though it's some scientific term thing, so it's not exactly easy to put into your poetry.

Louise

here for your dad
Oh, Anja...

I cannot explain my fondness for you,
in frustration it makes me turn purple.
Remember that time we went to the zoo?
You taught me that turtles like...

DAMN IT!

... The sound that you make when you gurgle?

Like Chewbacca having something down his throat.
It makes no sense because I can't rhyme.
Yeah, go ahead and gloat.
In the end many are in the same boat.
Rhyming every last word is just a lot easier.
And helps me write poetry far more... Sleazier?

You said you dislike poetry,
yet here you are in idolatry.
I wish I could rhyme,
I'm sure it'd help the Prime,
but alas I'm the opposite of sublime.

Still we're better than most,
and worse than some.
Yet here I am blabbing on,
until you want to kick my bum.

Also turtles like wax myrtles.

P.S. I cheated on this.

I'd also just like to mention that I've seen people get away with not following the challenges exactly as stated.

It's kind of like an unspoken rule, but it's the effort that they care about most. I honestly don't see why a judge would gasp dramatically just because someone missed a rhyme, as long as the thread is genuine and shows effort then the writer worked for their rare material. That's kind of the whole point, just so people who want nice things work for those nice things.

BUT THAT'S ALL MEANINGLESS. SOMEONE THREATENED TO KICK MY BUM.

*GASPS DRAMATICALLY*
You didn't rhyme!
In a thread where it fits thematically.

My sole input is systematically
time by time
pacing rhyme shifts erratically.

But if effort's held up and praised dogmatically
I see no issue with the climb
Songsteel is a powerful asset thus the difficulty's increased dramatically.

I see no reason for us to dread
as Valiens says
"there are many paths to tread."
