OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create an artifact that will be used as a story tool.
  • Image Source: All images are from "His Dark Materials" TV series, (BBC One / HBO)
  • Canon Link: N/A
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: N/A
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Dagger
  • Size: Small
  • Weight: Light
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Compounds and amplifies both the Force and Blood Trail bond between Ashin and Spencer
  • Hyper-honed, alchemized point will never dull and cannot be damaged by conventional means
  • Concentrates incoming/outgoing energy through the combination of ultrachrome spine and focusing crystal blade matrix, allowing wielder to pinpoint certain wavelengths or resonances of energy via means of meditation/concentration through the tip of the blade
  • Dagger’s pommel stone presence can be easily sensed by either Ashin or Spencer as having one another’s signature, those of blood relation will also have a bond to it
STRENGTHS
  • Amplifies frequency bonds between wielder and target (if such a bond exists), compounding multiple bonds for a stronger signal detection
  • Hyper-honed, alchemized point will never dull and cannot be damaged or dulled by conventional means
  • Concentrates incoming/outgoing energy through the combination of ultrachrome spine and focusing crystal blade matrix, allowing wielder to pinpoint certain wavelengths or resonances of energy via means of meditation/concentration through the tip of the blade
  • Can conduct and dispense Force Lightning like a traditional Sith sword
  • Good at stabbing essentially anything, with appropriate concentration
WEAKNESSES
  • Small and lightweight dagger provides very little in the way of battle, this isn’t a dueling weapon
  • Holds a highly biased bond toward Ashin and Spencer Varanin, this dagger is strongest and most potent in their possession and will only work half as well for someone else
  • Emanates the Force signature of both Ashin and Spencer, making it damn near impossible to hide from other Force users
  • Use of the dagger requires meditation or strong concentration
  • Irreversible damage can be rendered to the user if care is not taken (such as severed Force Bonds or Blood Trails, physical wounds)
  • Grip is made of molded Agrinium metal and is therefore not particularly comfortable or easy to hold
  • Blade length is unhoned and has next to no cutting ability - on par with a butter knife. It cannot be honed to hold an edge without destroying the blade's other unique properties.
  • Alchemization of the crystal blade provides very minimal lightsaber resistance - a lightsaber can pass through the crystal portion of the blade with effort, though will become stuck upon the ultrachrome spine (prolonged contact will eventually melt it)
DESCRIPTION
The Waythorne was the answer to the need of a friend. In her journey to bring back her beloved wife, Ashin requested from Dissero an item that would aid in her search for Spencer’s soul - lost somewhere in the abyssal realms of the Netherworld. Though she’d come for a compass of sorts, in his musings and meditations on the project Dissero came to the conclusion that a compass would not suffice. There were too many unknowns at work within the Netherworld, too many things that could interfere or block the use of an item as delicate as a compass.

What he crafted for her instead was a compass needle.

Ashin and Spencer stood as bonded opposing forces, two pieces of a whole fated to be together. Where the way was lost, the Waythorne would guide them to one another, no matter what elements stood between them.

Through use of the Shamalain Meditation Stones wherein Force Master Ashin Varanin, a woman who had ravaged the galaxy under one name or another, would find a way to identify and connect with these twelve facets of being: Earth, Air, Water Fire, Mind, Body, Self, Spirit, Time, Life, Death, and Energy. Through this understanding of herself, she could then take a Kyber crystal and attune it using those facets as they defined and reflected the wholeness of her bond with Spencer. This crystal is the heart of the Waythorne, located at the base of the pommel, and serves as the balancing point between both women while embodying the bonds they share through blood, the Force, and life itself.

In order to track these unseen tethers between them it became prudent that the Waythorne’s construction would need to be one sensitive and conductive to all manner of energies. Dissero chose a core of Ultrachome for its superconductive properties and the ability for it to conduct what energy was set upon it across its entire mass. Forming the quillions and spine for the blade, it would enable various wavelengths of energy to be funneled openly through its length.

Agrinium was chosen for the grip. Its properties of resistance to all forms of radiation creates a buffer between the user and the core - essentially protecting one from the other. The downside to this means the metal grip is not particularly comfortable to use with a strong hand and can be slippery in the palm; it is meant to be held with a firm but light grasp.

The blade itself is not metal at all, but an amalgamation of stones and crystals carefully chosen for their properties. Kasha Crystals inform clarity of intention and purpose within the blade, as well they aid in clearing the mind of distractions to bolster a healthy environment for the concentration necessary to wield it. Kunda Stones and Qixoni Crystals were chosen for their focusing abilities often seen in lightsaber construction - combined within the Waythorne these abilities compound the energy of the focused bonds and amplify them. The presence of Qixoni offers a slight enhancement buff to the user’s Force abilities when channeled through the blade.

At his home on the third moon of Vassek, better known as Grievous’ Castle, these crystals were attuned to protect their properties and then flash-melted within his forge via the application of Arkanian dragon fire from his long-time associate and guardian of his Vault, Faenrovon the Radiant. In a long and painstaking process of meditative Art of the Small, Dissero formed the blade from this slowly-cooling compound of crystals. To ensure its accuracy would never falter or wane, the point was hyper-honed to a microscopic edge using pulverized particles of the Mind Stone shard. With a final blast of super-heating he married it around the spine of ultrachrome. The result was a blade of curious color that shone not quite like metal and gleamed not quite like crystal. He called it dragonglass for lack of any better name.

To test the abilities of the Waythorne and ensure it would serve its intended purpose, Dissero asked Faenrovon to take an artifact with which the alchemist had placed a blood trail and hide it somewhere on the moon. Though the dagger had been crafted with a specific task in mind, he found it was still responsive to his own. Quiet meditation with it at hand allowed Dissero to pin-point the direction in which he must search for the hidden item and did, after numerous sessions along the way, eventually bring him to its exact location.

Several further trials were run to test the theory that he could, with exceptionally keen concentration, pick up the blood trail on multiple items, one at a time. However he did find that this sort of meditation was a delicate balance between holding the idea of the item in his mind without forcing the issue. Trying too hard resulted in a severance of the blood trail, much to his horror.

In a fumble of use while crafting a protective sheath for the dagger, Dissero discovered that the point had the uncanny ability to stab through just about anything - including metal, flesh, bone, and Arkanian dragon scales. Needless to say, Faenrovon was both highly intrigued and offended. To better understand the extent of its stabbing ability, he tested it against a variety of metal within his forge. While it penetrated most with relative ease, he found that the ultra resilient metals such as Phrik and even Beskar could only be with exceptional concentrative effort, resulting in intensive mental fatigue and pain. As well, the tighter hold needed on the grip for such a feat had left him with a heavily bruised and cut hand. He deemed the novelty of it not worth the labor. It was noted during these trials that while it could stab, the blade had such minimal cutting abilities that he could not even use it to shear softened leather hide.

The greatest trials of the Waythorne were undertaken in the hands of the woman it was meant for. Traversing the various realms of the Netherworld, Ashin Varanin used the Waythorne as her guiding compass needle to find her wife, Spencer. The dagger proved fully resilient and consistent despite the challenges she faced. In the end it, in tandem with Entropy, was used to pierce and slice open the ethereal entrance into the Dreaming Dark in order to expel Ashin's allies from its clutches.
