DESCRIPTION

The Forge was conceived to serve two purposes. One was to provide a mobile training facility for the Order of Fire, Firemane's Force-using branch. The Order is a heavily militarised, martial organisation. Rather than being cloistered space monks, the Order's adepts are trained in the manner of soldiers. They are taught about military tactics, marksmanship, demolitions, first aid and so instead of only learning about the Force and lightsabre combat. In keeping with this, each member of the Order has a dual rank; a military one and an order one. For instance, Elpsis is a Mistress (or Master) of the Order, but a Lieutenant in Firemane's army. The military rank takes precedence, meaning a Master of the Order cannot boss around a Firemane officer who has a higher army rank.

While the Order adheres to the principle of freedom of religion, the Force is not not treasted as some sort of mystical journey and connection. Instead it is a tool one uses and trains just like physical ed, weapons or piloting. This means that training is like in a boot camp or military academy. Instead of a Master being assigned a Padawan as a personal student, groups of trainees are trained together. Close mentor-student relationships develop once the recruits have been winnowed down to the best. Select batches of Order recruits are brought to the Forge to train. The trainees are drawn from the Young Flames, the Order's cadet organisation. It gives them a taste of military life and prepares them for future careers in the military. This ties in with the second purpose of the space station. Exploration has always been an important part of Firemane's portfolio.

Exploring remote regions of space and connecting worlds that were cut off by the Gulag Virus has assumed greater importance in recent years. The corporation's holdings are rather far-flung. As a result, the Forge also performs the function of a patrolling and monitoring station. In that capacity, it monitors Firemane's 'borders'. Because a contingent of Force-Users can only accomplish so much on its own, the station has a garrison. Its armaments and and armour allow it to hold its own with limited support, though it obviously has its limits. The station and the personnel that serve on it are part of Firemane's Exploration Corps, which is directed by Tegaea Alcori.

The station is designed to be self-sufficient and has a powerful communications suite capable of encrypting and transmitting across vast distances. The Forge has all the facilities required for its inhabitants to operate independently. While it receives shipments from supply convoys, the station has a hydroponic garden so that it can grow its own food. This is pertinent if it is far from home or deliveries are disrupted. Moreover, it also features entertainment and recreational areas. However, on the whole life on the Forge is very Spartan and there is little downtime. Patrolling the frontier sounds romantic, but is not that glamorous in practice. There is plenty of danger though. Living quarters and bunkrooms are humble. Hot tubs are sadly not a thing. The Forge has a multi-denominated religious shrine that provides a place of worship for the believers among the base personnel. Firemane endorses freedom of religion, though hate speech, sedition and the like will not be tolerated.

The station has extensive training facilities and a well-stocked armoury. Aside from the usual combat training facilities, it features meditation areas and rooms designed to safely practice elemental Force abilities. Training droids modelled on those used by the ancient Jedi are available for sparring. One room has a collection of large stones comparable to the Muntuur stones. These are used for advanced telekinesis practice. An advanced marksmanship course allows soldiers to hone their skills as riflemen. To make things more interesting than just shooting at static objects, the targets are designed to move while under fire. Moreover, if a soldier lingers too long in one place, stun traps are triggered. Auto-turrets can also be triggered to fire stun blasts. After all, the enemy tends to shoot back in battle. Ysalamiri nutrient tanks are available to enable Force-Users to train under conditions where they are deprived of their powers.

There is also a forge for the construction of lightsabres, Force Imbued weapons and so on. There is a laboratory for the collection and study of samples the crew discovers during its journey. The addition of an ARGH 3D Printer gives the station a comprehensive recycling system, allowing it to break down physical objects, such as liquids, gases, and solid objects like old refuse into basic molecules, and then re-arrange them back into physical objects, like water, oxygen, weapons, simple droids, foodstuff or components like bones, armour plates, or electronics. A solid fuel converter has also been installed. This means that when parts are not required, the station can siphon raw materials into the converter to produce additional fuel cells for its engines. The design of the station promotes efficient fuel use, so that consumables and fuel supply last as long as possible.

Recently, Elpsis Kerrigan-Alcori has been assigned to the Forge. It is part of her efforts to find a new direction in Firemane after her ordeal on Tephrike. When Firemane came across Tephrike, they made first contact with the Dominion of Light, a totalitarian, Jedi-led theocracy that ruled most of the planet. While initial contact was hostile, the Dominion agreed to negotiate and seemed willing to pursue the path of accommodation. Unaware of just how bad things were on the planet, Firemane sent a delegation to the Dominion's capital.

Elpsis secretly joined its security detail in defiance of her mother's orders, as she feared that she would be needed if things went south. At first all seemed to go well. Unfortunately, an extremist faction in the Dominion's government decided to sabotage the talks, viewing the outsiders as Sithspawn demons. The delegates were attacked by Dominion fanatics. Nearby Dominion soldiers, believing their people were under attack, joined in. Elpsis tried to pull off a rear guard action and ended up staying behind to cover the retreat. Though she fought valiantly, she was taken down by Dominion Inquisitors and imprisoned in a concentration camp.

For a while she succumbed and was reborn as 'Jedi Roxane', a brainwashed drone devoted to the Dominion. However, she was able to overcome her conditioning and slay the Grand Inquisitor. Her actions sparked a prison revolt. When she was reunited with the Firemane task force that had come to rescue, Elpsis had defeated her tormentors, but the ordeal had left her with deep physical and mental scars. The new Elpsis was more goal-orientated and focused, but also more grim and haunted by what she had endured and done while under the thumb of the Inquisition. It took a while until she had recovered physically and even longer until she was ready mentally to return to active service. To keep her productive, she was made one of the Order's trainers and given a commission as a Lieutenant.

As part of her efforts to perform damage control, Siobhan commissioned a movie that extolled her daughter as a Firemane heroine. This did not reflect her personal views, as she was very critical of her daughter's actions. Elpsis really disliked the way she was being whitewashed, for the movie portrayed her in a purely heroic light. After being cleared for active duty again, she was put in command of one of the Young Flames' platoons, making her responsible for a mixed group of recruits. Some intended to pursue a career with Firemane, others were here for what amounted to an exchange programme.

The new unit was called Inferno Platoon. After a training period on Arkas, the platoon was given a few missions, such as rescuing slaves from a First Order Remnant group and aiding the Vashyada during the maiden voyage of their new worldship. Now Elpsis and Inferno Platoon have been assigned to the Forge. There Elpsis has been given responsibility for training recruits and dealing with local issues. Colonel Lucille Guyenne, a Firemane career officer, holds the army-marine command. A Qadiri called Khamasa Jal Nadur is responsible for the naval element.
