The sun had gone down hours ago, and Gilaria had only grown more beautiful for it.

Where the day had been gold, the evening was something rarer. The Vaimana's great terrace opened to the night like a held breath, tiered marble underfoot, polished to a mirror and inlaid with deco sunbursts that caught the light and threw it back; tall gilded columns rising into the dark; and strung between them, lantern after lantern, warm paper moons swaying gently on their lines above the dance floor. Beyond the balustrade the sea lay black and silver, the lights of distant outriggers drifting like fallen stars, and past them the dark shoulders of the Waihokai islands. Above it all, the real stars — thick and uncountable, the way they only ever were this far out, at the quiet edge of everything.

And music. Always, tonight, there was music.

On the raised stage beneath the great golden sunburst, The Goldleaf Orchestra held the room in the palm of its hand. Maravaila's finest, brought in at no small expense and worth every credit of it, strings and brass and a grand piano gleaming black under the lanterns, a harp threading silver through the whole. They did not play the staid and the expected. That was the wonder of them: they took the bright and the beloved, the songs everyone half-knew, and they made them new, a swelling, jazzy, golden reinvention that turned a familiar melody into something that lifted you clean off your feet before you'd decided to dance. One number sighed and shimmered; the next struck up with a wink and a brassy swagger that had couples laughing as they spun. It was serious talent worn with a lightness that felt, somehow, like generosity.

Through it all moved the guests, and what a gathering they made. Finery from a dozen worlds and as many allegiances, silk and beskar-thread and jeweled throats catching the lanternlight; old friends and new rivals sharing a floor and, for tonight at least, sharing a peace. Servers slipped between them bearing trays of something gold and effervescent. The terrace bars glowed. The tables along the edges flickered with candlelight, and the whole vast beautiful room hummed with the particular warmth of people who have, however briefly, set their burdens down at the door.

And then, as one piece drew to its close and the applause rose soft and genuine, a voice, warm, unhurried, golden as the rest of it, came gently over the room.

goldleaforchestra.png

"Honored guests. Friends of the Commonwealth. Friends of the Grand Vizier." A pause, a smile audible in the words. "Be welcome, all of you, to Sun and Starlight. The galaxy will still be there in the morning. Its troubles will keep. Its borders, its quarrels, its long cold accountings, all of it will wait for you, patient as ever, when the sun comes up.

"But not tonight. Tonight there is only this shore, this sea, this sky, and the company of those glad to share it with you. Tonight you are not an admiral, or an envoy, or an enemy, or a name on someone's ledger. Tonight you are simply a guest beneath the lanterns, and you are wanted here.

"So dance. Eat. Drink. Stay late. Let the Goldleaf play you through to morning.

"The Grand Vizier bids you welcome, and bids you, for one night, to be happy."

The orchestra swelled. The lanterns swayed. Somewhere a cork sang free of its bottle, and laughter answered it, and the dance floor turned and gleamed beneath a thousand small warm lights.

For one night, on one bright shore at the edge of the galaxy, there was nothing to do but enjoy it.

Welcome to the gala.

The orchestra dipped, softly, and gentled, the strings drawing back to a low shimmer, the brass holding its breath. A change in the air. The kind of hush that precedes something the room has been waiting for without knowing it.

Then, from either side of the great gilded stage, they came.

The first stepped into the lanternlight from the left: a tall figure in a gown the deep blue-black of the sea past midnight, sequins catching the light so that she seemed, with every unhurried step, to be trailing stars. She found her mark beside the piano and let one gloved hand rest upon it, and she did not rush to sing, she simply looked out over the floor, an easy knowing warmth in her face, as though she already shared a secret with every soul in the room.

The second came from the right, and where the first was midnight the second was gold, a sweep of shimmering amber and cream, a smile that arrived before the voice did, bright and unguarded and made for exactly this. There was an effortlessness to the pair of them, a comfort, the look of singers who had done this a hundred times in a hundred beautiful rooms and still found the joy in it every time.

A glance passed between them. A nod to the conductor.

And as the orchestra rose again to meet them, that golden, swelling, impossible-to-sit-still sound, the two voices lifted together over the lanterns and the sea and the upturned faces, and the night, somehow, became finer still.

Outfit: Echani Dress
Tag: OPEN

Lily had returned from the beach hours before the gala event, there was going to be needed a lot of time to sort herself ready for gala. Lily had selected a beautiful dress for the event, something that Lily wanted to incorporate the Echani fashion and styling. There were several handmaidens that assisted Lily with her hair, the make-up and the dress. Making sure that the dress conformed to her figure, it was a dress that styled Lily in a manner that she had not felt like wearing in a while. Now felt like a good time to try this style of dress once again, something that harkened back to her cultural roots. The hair braided and weaved with jewels and silver jewellery.

The Echani took a moment to look in the mirror, checking how the dress fitted her figure and adjusting the skirt and fabric trails, the whites and silver felt very much like her home. "This looks good, well done, thank you." Lily smiled to the handmaidens and let them leave. Making note that her mother would need to give a bonus to all her handmaidens for their excellent for tonight with Lily.

Entering the gala hall, the heels clicked softly on the hard floor, her silver eyes gazing through the crowds. Seeing who would be attending this event, would there be familiar faces from the beach or would there be new faces? Her hands shifted to her back, listening to the music. It was pleasant and the orchestra reminded Lily of many balls and high society events that Lily attended when she was younger. There was a lot of events that she attended while a child, paraded as the future head of her house. There was some sadness mixed with those memories that made Lily disregard them in her mind.

For now, she looked to see where one might go to dance. It would be too troublesome to be hunting a server down to grab a drink. Lily wanted to dance, and perhaps have a dancing partner if someone approached her that she deemed interesting enough.

Vaux took a breath. Ths wasn't her thing. Mig usually handled this stuff... actually come to think of it the fleet usually avoid these things.... Well, she was here now, but she knew she wouldn't be caught dead in a dress. She did however take a que from her neice in her own way. A suit with a long coat, the same olive green color are her flight armor. Sure it was a little "dressy" around the edges, but she still felt more like her than a full dress. Plus she had left one, more decrative pauldron with the her clan's signet. Still a Mandalorian after all. Her hair was also tied back, silver eyes clear as day without her helmet. Usually she'd have a weapon, but... yeah she was smart enough not to play with fire. Plus, not like she wasn't always kinda armed anyway. She knew how to throw a punch.

Still, despite all this, she definitely wasn't as comfortable as she was in a starfighter..... Crap she'd been a spacer for a bit too long. She looked around, noticing an echani there. Maybe she shouldn't have been surprised, but still she was a little. She then heard the speech, giving a quiet clap before deciding maybe a little liquid courage wouldn't hurt, and decided to see what a place like this considered a strong drink.

STARLIGHT TERRACE

Dressed in a simple black-and-white tux, because to be honest no one really cared how the men showed up at these things, Judah moved carefully around the dancefloor.

It had seemed over the past several months he had been dancing more than he had over the past several years. Indifferent to the entire activity, he was amused by the now relative frequency.

Moving confidently in the box-step dance, a grin was flashed to his dance partner.

"Seem to be holding your own on this. Feeling alright? Not moving too quick am I? Fairly simple dance. Don't think we could both mess this up. Although I will say any missteps in this endeavor are entirely on the man who is leading."

A small shrug as the gentle press of his hand on her hip guided Iandre through the relative repetitive movements.

"Same outlook as a business really. Failure falls upon the leader - although I don't think a number if my compatriots feel the same way."

A small scoff.

"Governments too I suppose. Although those leaders tend to scatter like roaches during the power collapse."

If there had ever been a quiet agreement among women across the galaxy to make formal wear as complicated as possible, Iandre figured they'd pulled it off.

Her gown was a deep burgundy, rich and dark like old wine under the lanterns, with fine gold embroidery tracing the neckline and sleeves. Elegant without screaming for attention, exactly what she preferred. After months of hiding from grief and anger, she still felt uneasy being looked at.

At least the dancing was easier.

A small smile formed as Judah guided her through another turn. "I'm doing much better," she said softly. "Thanks for asking."

She let herself enjoy the music and the rare chance to just exist somewhere that asked nothing of her.

Then his leadership talk earned a soft laugh. "That sounds like something a man would say right before he steps on my foot," she teased.

The corner of her mouth lifted. "Though you're not wrong. The best leaders I've known took responsibility when things went bad. The worst seemed to think success was theirs alone, but failure belonged to someone else."

Her eyes drifted across the dance floor before coming back to him.

"I'll admit, comparing dancing, business, and government like they're all the same job is a new one for me." A quiet laugh escaped her. "I'm still deciding if that's some deep truth about leadership or something kind of sad about your hobbies."

The collar of the formal tunic chafed against Kasir's pale neck. Clearly this was a reminder that he was playing a role unfamiliar to him. He also tugged at the cuff. The garment was just as alien as to what he'd worn earlier.. only more restrictive. Even the raven tresses were tied back tonight.

A handful of assignments in the past were spent stalking galas from the shadows, watching the elites peacock under the pretense of duty. Here, under the lanterns, reality became louder than imagination. A sensory assault to his unnatural senses. There were too many heartbeats, and all the social energy made the nerves spark. Even the laughter here was too.. polite?

While drifting across the floor and through the crowds, he listened to the Grand Vizier's speech; naturally, he disagreed with almost all of it, aside from mention of refreshments. How would be possibly condemn the chocolate sundaes from earlier? Those were in some ways, a grand triumph. They'd been surprisingly competent. Whatever synthetic alchemy defined them, they were much to the Sangnir's liking.

Admittedly, the jazzy rhythm was found to be hypnotic, and superior to whatever vibrations he'd suffered through on the beach earlier. He wove through another constellation of dancers before his gaze suddenly locking onto the Pink One. He wouldn't dare claim credit for her presence tonight. Logic still dictated he shouldn't be here. But returning behind the Black Wall just to shuffle on sand for and look like a fool, in his estimation, awaste of energy.

Shedding the last remnants of hesitation, he moved, strides carrying elegance not displayed earlier. "You changed your hair again." Well, she hadn't, but he needed an excuse to look in her direction. "Why must dance demand we stand so close, only to chase one another in some endless and futile circle? If the purpose is to 'enjoy' the music, surely one can accomplish that from a distance, yes?"

Kasir's mind spun through a few more probabilities. "In theory, there appears to be this strange assumption that dancing is improved by closeness. I fail to see how this makes the movements more efficient." He glanced downward at the floor, then leveled back to the Zeltron. "I remain unconvinced." He exhaled a slow breath. "However, should you wish to test theories, I suppose I could be persuaded with another sundae. But do not expect a twirl. I strictly refuse."

The gala hall opened before him in a wash of warm light and distant music. Open archways overlooked the ocean beyond, allowing the evening breeze to drift through the venue carrying the scent of saltwater and tropical flowers, and conversations mingled beneath the orchestra's performance while guests drifted across the ballroom in elegant clusters. Caelan took it all in for a moment before he noticed her.

The crowd didn't vanish. The music didn't fade away. He wasn't so young as to mistake attraction for destiny. But his attention lingered. White and silver caught the light beautifully, the styling carrying unmistakable Echani influence the intricate braids, the jewelry woven through them, the effortless grace with which she carried herself all combining into something difficult to ignore. Echani. That much he was reasonably certain of. A small smile found its way onto his face. That settled where he was going next.

He claimed two glasses from a passing server with a polite nod and made his way across the ballroom at an unhurried pace. There was no rush. If she disappeared before he crossed the room, then perhaps it wasn't meant to be. Fortunately, she remained exactly where she was.

As he approached, he waited until she noticed him before offering one of the drinks. "For you." The smile remained, easy and genuine. "I was hoping to avoid introducing myself to strangers tonight." A brief glance around the ballroom followed. "Unfortunately, that plan lasted about thirty seconds." Only then did he offer his name. "Caelan." His eyes drifted briefly to the silver and white details of her attire before returning to hers. "That's Echani influence, isn't it?"

Lily didn't have to wait long for someone to approach, a red haired male, the way he carried himself there was an air of Mandalorian. The shift from not being in armour, many would not necessarily see it but the Echani could not help but notice it. A big sign seemed to be placed above his head that flashed Mandalorian when she looked at him. A playful smirk etched itself on her lips as she accepted the glass from him, it would be rude not to accept the drink as Lily took a polite sip. Tasting the beverage and feeling how the taste lingered on her palate.

"Oh? Could not resist my beauty was that the issue?" Lily teased in a soft voice, a giggle behind it. She had dealt with many flirtatious lines over the years and accustomed to most, so she liked to see how people using them reacted her to calling it out. "Not influenced, pure Echani. Made on Eshan, designed by an Echani and wore by an Echani." Lily smiled, letting her silver eyes inspecting Caelan's attire. "Interesting choice, formal enough to be appropriate but not too formal. Allows you to avoid overheating with the temperature. Though, bold choice in colour, either you don't plan on dancing or you don't sweat much." Lily pointed out, giving her own observation on the attire he was wearing.

Offering a hand, "Lily Decoria, a pleasure to meet you Caelan." A genuine smile warmed on her pale full lips as she took another sip from her glass. "What brings you to a gala like this then?" Attempting to do the important small talk conversation starters.

Aoi hated going to these kinds of events.

She knew they were necessary, but she disliked how…performative they always felt.

Everyone dressed up in their fancy clothing, adorned in expensive jewellery, sometimes paired with another equally fancy and expensive looking person. All looking like freshly preened peacocks fanning their feathers. And yet here Aoi was, doing exactly the same thing, just presently down in the lower echelons of entrepreneur status.

But that was a big reason for attending these events; and forking out the credits in order to even afford the invite. Connections were a crucial part of Aoi’s business, so she played the part of a peacock, though it was impossible to shake off the feeling she was advertising herself, more so than her business.

Since arriving, she had already managed to get a few people’s interest. Whether it was genuine or fake interest, Aoi didn’t know. She just hoped something would come from chatting those types up. Cast a wide net, and hope you snag a few worthwhile connections.

Right now though, the young Atrisian was looking to strike up a more casual conversation. Something to cleanse the palette of having to sweet-talk some wealthy executive.

Aoi stood off to the side, fidgeting with the shawl that was currently draped across the crooks of her arms. What she’d do to just be back at the workshop right now…but the next big event after this wasn’t for a while, so she couldn’t afford to ditch the gala early.

Focus Aoi, even if you’re not the centre of attention right now, the way you hold yourself is always under scrutiny by someone.

She hated the fact her father’s advice still rang in her head.

Letting out a soft sigh, Aoi began to move, sifting through the crowds in search of someone who’d give her a reprieve from business talk. As her gaze fell to the other side of the expansive room, Aoi caught sight of someone.

A young woman like herself, roughly the same age too. Standing off to the side, eyes lingering around, watching and observing. And practically screaming: ‘I’m here for appearance’s sake, I’d much rather be anywhere else right now’. Feeling she had found a potential mutual soul in this glamorous den, Aoi approached.

Credit for your thoughts?” She asked, stepping towards Colette just as the Quartermaster had her focus turned elsewhere.

The wind passed through the building particularly well here. If Colette closed her eyes she could almost pretend she was somewhere near Theed, on her way back to the temple after a day of meetings. The necessary kinds that the Order's sponsors had a right to every now and again. The ones where she explained that everything was fine and the boat wasn't rocking.

Although, given recent events… Perhaps not.

The realization was enough to snap her out of her daydream as the weight of reality took a hold of her again. A particularly long sigh blew from her nostrils and she shook her head. How would she explain to a board of concerned citizens that the Order was having a bit of a management problem at the moment? At least eight of them were there solely for the non-violent crisis assistance. If—

"Credit for your thoughts?"

"Oh!" Colette barked in surprise. "Oh, I was just thinking about work."

She turned to look at whoever had spoken to her. It was a complete stranger. Green eyes, pale skin, black hair. Sith? No, that was just the background noise. Jedi? Never seen before. Also, didn't reek of mild self-righteousness. So who was it? Colette gave a rather unsubtle once-over.

"Colette. Jedi." She said and extended a hand. "And you are?"

She looked at the hand when offered and measured the firmness of the shake. It was practiced, or so it felt like. Less of a limp fish and more like a gentle vice. Hidden power, one might say although that was most likely just the gentle buzz from her drinks talking and making things out to be just a little more dramatic than they were.

This beer bottle wasn't the first and it wouldn't be the last. In all honesty she'd forgotten just exactly at what point it was that Katherine had finally managed to break through her shell and gotten her that first 'come on, just one' drink. The redhead would pay dearly for this if the quartermaster woke up with a headache tomorrow.

Kat knew that her niece was attending the gala in some ridiculous Echani styled dress. Demonstrating that Lily was far more suited to being not only an Echani but the one who should be the head of their family. Kat on the other hand was here for drinks, networking with people looking for a mercenary and seeing if she would spot any familiar faces to have a good time with. Potentially find a bed with them as well. Depended on how the night went and how this place's storage on alcohol was. Kat was not going into the party in a dress, that was not her style at all.

Standing at the coat check, Kat handed over her jacket, while it did somewhat complete the look. A jacket in this weather at this event, it felt a little stiff and warm. Kat rolled her sleeves slightly and spotted a server, gesturing them over to her with a waggle of her finger. "Corellian whisky, neat. If I see an ice cube even glance in the direction, I will not be happy." Kat's playful eyes narrowed to show she was serious, at least teasing about how serious the issue was while still wanting a neat drink.

Her iron gaze roamed the crowd, no one seemed to be a familiar face besides her niece. It was disappointing but the night was still very young and there was a chance someone would come approach her that she recognised. When the server returned with her drink, Kat nodded her head in approval, admiring the colouration of the whisky in the glass for a moment. The orchestra was playing some music, Kat wasn't too swayed by the beat yet. It took a few more drinks in the Echani before she felt any desire to dance.

Taking a sip of the whisky, Kat let out a satisfied gasp, "good stuff. Next time I need to ask him what year this is from..." Kat thought aloud.

The transformation from beachside celebration to evening gala was remarkable.

Hours earlier, the shoreline had been filled with sunlight, music, and the relaxed atmosphere of guests escaping their responsibilities for a day. Now the Vaimana seemed to glow from within, every lantern and candle contributing to an almost dreamlike atmosphere beneath the endless canopy of stars.

Seren arrived beside Varin, her arm resting comfortably within his as they stepped onto the terrace. For a moment, she simply paused to take it all in. The lanterns swaying overhead. The polished marble reflected gold light across the floor. The distant shimmer of the sea beyond the balustrade. It was beautiful in a way that felt effortless, as though the entire evening had been designed not to impress, but to welcome.

For once, she had made an effort.

The gown she wore was fashioned from rich emerald silk that caught the lantern light with every movement, shifting between deep forest green and brighter jade depending on how the fabric fell. The fitted bodice was embroidered with delicate gold thread that climbed upward in patterns resembling flowering vines, while the skirt flowed freely to the floor in soft layers that moved almost like water around her legs. The design exposed her shoulders and left her arms bare, though a sheer gold-trimmed shawl rested loosely around them more for elegance than warmth.

Her blue-black hair had been gathered into a partially braided arrangement at the back of her head, woven with tiny gold leaves that caught the light whenever she moved. The rest fell freely down her back in soft waves, lending a gentleness to her appearance that contrasted sharply with the image many held of her. Combined with the warm glow of her amber eyes, the effect was less that of a Sith and more of a woman enjoying an evening among friends.

As the Grand Vizier's voice carried across the terrace, Seren found herself listening more closely than she had expected. Perhaps because there was sincerity in the words. No political maneuvering. No hidden meaning. Simply an invitation to set burdens aside for a few hours and enjoy what had been created here.

Her gaze drifted briefly toward Varin before returning to the gathering crowd.

A faint smile touched her lips.

For once, she intended to follow those instructions.

Caelan laughed genuinely. "I'll admit the beauty was a contributing factor," he said, accepting the tease without any apparent embarrassment. "Though I prefer to think of it as good judgment rather than a lack of self-control." He took a sip of his own drink as she offered her assessment of his attire, glancing down at himself with the expression of a man hearing a verdict he hadn't known he was waiting on.

"Pure Echani," he repeated, something appreciative in his tone. "And made on Eshan. That's rare to see this far from the homeworld." His eyes had already moved back to hers by the time she finished. The commentary on his clothing earned a quiet smile. "The color was a calculated risk," he admitted, "and you're right that I hadn't planned on dancing." A brief pause followed, his gaze drifting briefly across the ballroom before returning to her. "Though I'll confess I'm beginning to reconsider that particular plan. As for the heat," he smiled easily, "I can handle it."

He took her offered hand, and the shake was firm but not overly so. "Lily Decoria." He repeated the name the way someone did when they intended to remember it. "The pleasure is mine." Her question drew a small, uncomplicated smile, and an honest kind of smile with nothing to hide. "Vacation, genuinely. Nothing more complicated than that." His gaze settled back on her with easy curiosity. "And yourself?"

The day was pleasant, full of good company and conversation. Ways to get to know the other better and to bring in further understanding.

But night had drawn in and Varin had heard of a Gala that was happening that very night.

He walked with Seren on the terrace, arm linked with hers as his black suit accented with maroon designs covered his form. The massive figure that was Varin had come for pleasantry and conversation. But more importantly, at least to him, he came to dance with Seren by his side.

She simply looked stunning to him, her flowing dress and soft colors that seemed to fade and blend seamlessly had certainly caught his attention. The gold accents shining in the lantern light. Varin could not help but sneak small glances over to her in appraisal.

When the Grand Vizier spoke Varin remained silent, respectfully listening to the words that came to him. Simple rules and simple guidance of how to treat the night.

The music then started and Varin looked at her once again.

“Perhaps I had underdressed for this event?”

A small smirk followed with his jest.

“You look amazing.”

The whole thing reminded him of the first time he had seen her in a dress as elegant as this and the first time they had danced together.

To him it was the start of something close between the two. What had started as a friendship and slowly drew closer.

“Remember the last time we had danced together?”

There was a warm smile etched on Lily's lips, "well, I would have called you a liar if you tried saying otherwise. Especially at an event like this, men almost never approach a stranger unless they find an attraction there." There was a soft giggle as she called out what she saw as very predictable behaviour in the male gender, it was not necessarily a bad predictability. "Hmmm, too early to judge if that is the correct assessment or blind delusion. But I am curious enough to see which it is so you can stick around a little more." There was a flirtatious edge to her voice.

"Possibly, but being Echani, shouldn't be surprising that I am wearing something designed to ensure that I can fight at a moment's notice, as well as ensuring that a sparring or dancing partner gets to read the language of my body as we move." Lily mentioned, her fingers in her free hand gently played with the tail end of her braided hair as she sipped her drink slowly. "No dancing, what a terrible approach to a fine gala as this one? Especially with an orchestra. Dancing and moving to the beat, that's a crucial experience." She grinned when he mentioned reconsidering the idea, "well, you'll have to persuade me that you can keep up now. I refuse to have a dance partner that makes me do all the work to make them look good."

A wink from Lily as she said that.

"Vacation, attempting to not look as pale as an Echani does. But I also wished to make sure that people see that a Jedi is someone who is fun, approachable and pleasant company as one can be. I fear things have gotten a little stiff so changing the narrative inside and out, hopefully." Lily confessed with a soft nervous laugh, hoping she wasn't scaring the man off with admitting she was a Jedi.

A faint smile touched Seren's lips as she looked up at him. The lantern light caught against the dark fabric of his suit, softening some of the harder edges the galaxy so often demanded he wear. It was strange, in a way, seeing him here beneath the stars rather than on a battlefield or standing before some crisis that required his attention. The sight of him felt both familiar and entirely new at the same time. Stronger perhaps. More at peace. Or maybe she simply knew him better now than she had then.

"You did not underdress."

The amusement in her voice was gentle as her eyes briefly traveled over his attire before returning to his face. "Though I suspect if you had arrived wearing armor, half the guests would have assumed the gala was under attack." A quiet laugh escaped her before warmth softened her expression. "You look very handsome, Varin."

When he mentioned their first dance, her gaze drifted briefly toward the lanterns overhead, following their slow movement in the evening breeze as memory carried her backward. She remembered the uncertainty of it more than anything else. The awkwardness. The unfamiliarity. The way neither of them had truly known what they were becoming to one another. At the time, it had simply felt like a pleasant evening shared between friends, a moment that neither of them had understood would matter quite so much later.

"I remember."

The answer came quietly, accompanied by a small smile. "I remember being surprised you asked at all." A faint laugh followed. "And I remember thinking you seemed entirely too comfortable walking into situations you had absolutely no experience with." Her hand tightened slightly around his arm as she looked out across the dance floor, where couples moved beneath the lantern light while the orchestra filled the terrace with music.

For a moment, she found herself comparing that memory to where they stood now. Back then, neither of them could have known what waited ahead. The battles. The losses. The distance. The uncertainty. The countless moments that could have driven them apart, and somehow never did. Looking back, it felt almost impossible that so much had begun with something as simple as a dance. "At the time I thought it was simply a dance." Her amber eyes lifted to meet his. "Looking back, I think it was the beginning of something far more important than either of us realized."

"Step on your foot? I am not such an amateur that this will happen. Maybe twenty-five years ago or so caution would have been appropriate."

Attending these things meant he had only gotten better at the entire dancing portion. Not that he danced very often anymore, most of his time was out on the balcony smoking or talking among the other business types that were near his age.

"Sad state of my hobbies? Why are women obsessed with my hobbies?"

It was not the first time he had heard about the sad state of his leisure activities. He enjoyed his free time and the activities he did, was that not what mattered? He felt somewhere along the way he had missed something.

Most of his hobbies were solo activities - cooking, fishing, woodworking. Recently he had picked up bird watching when he was out and about - especially at events like this. It was easy to hide out in gardens with a cigarra in one hand and a pair of binoculars in the other.

"Just trying to make conversation." He paused, a twitch of amusement on his lips. "I will go back to being the strong silent type. I see I'm preferred as accessory rather than equal."

A soft chuckle left him at the comment about the armor.

“It was certainly tempting to wear it, but I found that the scraping of plates and the tapping of metal would ruin the tempo of the music.”

A soft smile reached him as he walked them through the terrace towards the dance floor.

He listened to her recount of the memory of their first shared dance, and he felt that memory. The chill in the air that for once did not bother him when they took their first steps together.

The small memory of feeling incredibly nervous when he first asked her and the feeling of holding that nervousness down in order to brave asking such a lovely lady for a dance.

“Truth be told, I was frightened. But when such a bright beacon shines in your eyes it makes it harder to notice anything else, Ki Hadzuska W'ana.”

He gently took her other hand in his as his other hand rested on her waist.

“Funny, I thought the same thing, and since then I may have gotten a bit better at dancing.”

His voice softened for her ears only.

“I remember when the shadows seemed to dance around us, the lantern light catching your eyes, and still that seems to stun me every time.”

Another soft smile reached him as he looked down at her, his form though it looked powerful, still held a measure of control to remain gentle and slow for her.

Aoi wasn’t expecting to catch the mysterious woman by surprise, but all the same, the Atrisian stifled the small chuckle that tried to escape her lips. Fortunately, it hadn’t been during mid-sip of her drink instead.

It did make her smile though, to see such genuine emotion. Especially after having to interact with so many that were ‘stiff and proper’. It was honestly refreshing to see something that was the complete opposite.

She went to reply to the work comment, only to pause upon catching the unsubtle once-over. Aoi smirked a little, opting to do the same.

Tanned skin, short brown hair with a pair of matching eyes; although maybe a shade or two lighter? Of what muscles she could see, it was clear the mystery before her; Colette was her name, worked out regularly. Far more than the Atrisian, that was for certain.

Aoi Tanaka, of Tanaka Industries.” She acted instinctively, replying and raising her hand to shake Colette’s, only Aoi grimaced slightly. “Sorry, force of habit. Just had like three different conversations that went the same, almost word for word.

The handshake was a mix of both firm and casual, the latter of which may have been in part due to the drink. But it still maintained a sense of professionalism, of someone who had to shake many hands in such a capacity. Made Aoi curious just what kind of work Colette was involved in.

She did make note of the choice of drink though. It was something simple compared to the more fancy stuff on offer tonight.

The orchestra carried the evening around them, brass and strings weaving together beneath the lantern light while couples moved across the polished floor. Seren allowed herself to be guided toward the dance floor without resistance, her hand settling naturally into his while the other rested lightly against his arm. The movement felt familiar now. Comfortable. There had been a time when such things would have made her self-conscious. That time had passed somewhere along the road behind them.

His admission drew an immediate smile from her.

A real one.

"You?" she asked softly, amusement warming her voice. "Frightened?" Her head tilted slightly as though genuinely attempting to picture it. "I am not certain I believe that. You have faced Sithspawn, armies, and political negotiations. Asking me for a dance seems comparatively survivable."

The use of her title softened her expression further. Her amber eyes met his as they moved together with the music, and for a moment, she simply enjoyed the feeling of being here with him. No emergencies. No battles. No looming responsibilities demanding their attention. Just a dance beneath the lanterns and the quiet certainty of his presence beside her. "Though I suppose I understand what you mean." Her voice lowered slightly. "Some things matter enough that they become frightening."

Her gaze drifted briefly across the terrace before returning to him. The lantern light reflected in his eyes much as he claimed it did in hers. "And yes," she admitted with a small smile. "You have improved." A hint of mischief appeared. "Considerably, in fact. I have yet to fear for my toes this entire evening."
