- Extreme practice is required to know what each blade does and how to efficiently use them. An adaptation period is therefore required, whenever changing from this lightsaber to another, and vice-versa.
To understand the design philosophy behind Zhio's lightsaber, one has to know its history.
As a youngling, Spek Zhio was given a nonlethal shoto lightsaber, to train the basic forms of lightsaber combat. This lightsaber, would later be the first step towards his own.
As a padawan learner, Spek built his first lightsaber. Inside, was an ilum crystal that produced a deep blue single blade. He used this lightsaber for many years, as an apprentice to Jairdain Ismet, but he never let go of his previous training shoto. Using it on his left (non-dominant) hand, and practicing dual wielding. His master, however, discouraged him from doing so, due to the risk that such an aggressive combat style posed for someone like Zhio's. Whose Force alignment tended towards the neutral, and could plunge into the Dark Side if unchecked.
But a Jedi's lightsaber is an extension of themselves. And, Spek Zhio, never felt that way with the weapon he had built.
Upon leaving the Silver Jedi, he gave up his blue lightsaber to his master. Neither of them remembering, at the time, that he still had the kimber stone shoto with him.
Drifting aimlessly across the galaxy, the Force led Spek to his homeworld of Zeltros, where he found a nishalorite stone. There, he spent months in meditation - in between some of that famous debauchery that Zeltros is known for - and acquired the parts to retrofit a cyclic crystal array and a 3-way switch on the lightsaber that he still carried, allowing it to contain two different kyber crystals. The original shoto from his years as a padawan, was rebuilt into something idiosyncratic to him.
The new crystal, attuned to the planetary magnetic field, causes the blade's color to intensify (from dark-gray to pure white) when pointing towards the magnetic north pole. Zhio, saw this as a sign. He would become a navigator for hire shortly afterwards, jumping from space crew to space crew, and performing odd-jobs. He still believes, to this day, that his power of instinctive astrogation came into being after he had found the nishalorite.
Finally, years later, he stumbled upon a ghostfire crystal, while on a job with a prominent trader. Recalling his years spent with his master, Zhio then began building a second lightsaber, by gathering materials he salvaged on a ship graveyard. As such, many of the components on his second saber, were originally part of a starship - such as the beam gem lens, that he repurposed from a broken navicomputer of an old YT-1930. This same ship, contained a sword, which served as inspiration for the guard on this second lightsaber hilt.
Zhio, now considers all three kybers and two hilts, as one entity. Along with a forth one, his own mind.
