Some questions before we begin...

Firstly, gimme the basic rundown of what's currently going on Galaxy-wise. Any big events or game-changing mechanics?
Secondly, are there restrictions on a piece of tech that could produce a kind of energy blade (not a lightsaber) that could be produced by closing one's fist? Not able to cut through everything like a lightsaber naturally. (This will all make sense when you see my full character art ).
Lastly, am I allowed to pretend that I'm cool even though this character is brand new? Like, she's good at her job and stuff (not like she can take down an army or something).

Firstly, any non-canon weapons should be submitted to the factory if it is to be used in roleplays against other players. Basically you need to explain the strengths and weaknesses of weapons. It may look daunting at first to do so, but we have great factory judges that will be more than happy to help you with your first submission. Once you got one down, you'll see how easy it is to submit items in the factory from weapons, ships to planets...and species if you like.
Secondly, you can't pretend you're cool...nope. No pretending.
I mean, you ARE cool... That is, as cool as you wish to write yourself as.

So, welcome to CHAOS and make yourself at home. It's a great place to role play and meet wonderful writers.

First of all Welcome!!!

For the basics of the timeline and what has gone on, you should take a look at the timeline (https://www.starwarsrp.net/ams/categories/timeline.4/). Chaos is a long way in the future from the movie timeline. In general major factions on the Light side are constantly battling factions of the Dark side in the map game by way of competitive storytelling in invasions and independent dominions of non-held planets. The current map is here (https://www.starwarsrp.net/pages/galaxy-map/) and it is pretty awesome.

As for tech, it is pretty open here. We have a system for creating new tech and getting it passed by Factory Judges if you would like, or you can essentially just have your tech so long as it doesn't break any of the rules on tech (https://www.starwarsrp.net/ams/factory-rules.2913/) more of the rules can be found in the rules tab up top. You will only have to get your tech judged if using it causes issues with people you are writing with. I'd recommend checking out some factions or the Chaos discord and talking the tech over with some of the tech heads just to make sure what you need to do.

Mind you, I am no one official right now, just been around a while.

And you can totally be good at your job and super cool. Just make sure there are no auto hits or god moding going on.

1. The major narratives are currently the threat of the Bryn'adûl. If you're familiar with the Vong, then these guys are kinda like Vong, but grown in the star wars galaxy, and, afaik, not force dead.
   Then there is the great war against the Sith Empire. It's a galaxy-spanning conflict that has involved almost every major faction in one way or another, but mainly sees the New Imperial Order (a Sith Empire rebellion turned legitimate Imperial State) and the Galactic Alliance (prime-time Light Side action, my bias should be obvious by my flairs) in a war to liberate the planets under Sith Empire rule. That is not to underplay the role of the Silver Jedi Concord, who have also had two big battles against the Sith, but things got a bit more complex recently, as there was a big alliance treaty signed between TSE, CIS, and SJC against the Bryn'adûl.
   The irony of a pact between Jedi and Sith who had fought major battles against each other just a month prior was not lost on the Silver Jedi Order (subgroup of the Coalition), however, so the treaty did not last long, as most of them were entirely against working with Sith. So now it's mostly the Sith, with help from the CIS, against the New Imperials and the Galactic Alliance. BUT, officially the Alliance and the CIS are actually allies, rather than enemies, so that makes this entire situation laden with awkwardness, kinda like a teenage rom-com, ngl.
   TL;DR: Big war by the New Imperials and the Galctic Alliance against the Sith who are getting help from the CIS, with a looming existential threat posed by the Bryn'adûl.
2. I'm pretty sure there's something like that in canon, if not, so long as it doesn't break any rules, roleplay or factory (specifically the banned or restricted items), you're golden. Don't need to create a submission for it in the factory either, if you don't feel like it (and if you do you can use it even if the tag still says "Unreviewed"). Factory's optional until you get reported, basically, but reporting only occurs if Wheaton's law or the rules are broken.
3. Do it up with your character's story. This is supposed to be a creative outlet. Write the things you find interesting, look at what others find interesting, write cooler stuff together. The world is your proverbial oyster!

Lastly, though this should'a probably come first, welcome and have fun.

Also, I can't find Zeltros on the map. Literally almost went cross-eyed trying to hunt it down. Any ideas as to what faction territory it's currently residing in? I don't want to make any inconsistencies in her bio.

Uuuhm, just personally I'd say enjoy yourself. Have fun, don't take things too seriously, always remember the golden rule of "Yes, and ...", and do it up. Chaos can be a really fun creative hobby and you're bound to have some amazing experiences with fellow writers,

Those other factions mentioned by Bernard of Arca are great, but if you're looking for something less traditional and more crimey and Cyberpunk-like, Darkwire is a great place to start out. We're very story centric, and home to all sorts of shadey types. Our narrative is based around a corporatocracy called the Corporate Authorities of Denon, and the struggle of the criminal organization Darkwire to make ends meet and stick it to the man.
