  • Description: During the Moross Crusade's assault of the planet and attempt to burn Yuuzhan'tar alive, something much more primal and dark stirred in the depths of the planet. Introducing the Great Deep, known in the Yuuzhan Vong tongue as Sen'tholl Fha. A vast swath of dark ocean teeming with an array of flora and fauna, Sen'tholl Fha is the deepest known point of all the oceans of Yuuzhan'tar. Mostly unexplored, the maximum known depth is 12,980 meters. No known explorer in the Yuuzhan Vong culture or otherwise has explorered the deepest parts of the trench - though several explorers have tried. Several sightings from those who have returned of massive shapes and mysterious sea creatures serve to heighten the mysteriousness of the Sen'tholl Fha.

At the bottom of the trench, the water columns above exert pressure of 1,208 bars, creating a density of water that is thought to be much greater than any Yuuzhan Vong or other non-aquatic humanoids could withstand. For this reason, no aquatic colonies by the Hrosha-Gul, the Legion Yun'Do, the Myrshavong, the Ur-Vong, the humans or other cultures that exist on Yuuzhan'tar are located within the depths of Sen'tholl Fha. Due to the great difficulty applied to those who would explore the ocean's depths, not much further is known about the trenches of Sen'tholl. Much can be assumed of the lifeforms that dwell at the greatest points of pressure - they must be as malleable and dire as their environment dictates. Yumatha Tren, a renowned explorer of Luminoss, reported nearly twenty years ago that he believed great beasts lurked the depths of the planet in his published oceanic memoir 'Yamar Unakhs Aoop'. Only one of Yumatha's ascertations of the Sen'Tholl Fha have been proven to this day.

That particular passage, ominously titled "The Howl From Beyond", regards a specific noise emanating from the Sen'Tholl Fha that has proven over the years to be a tracked pattern. Originally assumed by researchers from Luminoss to be either underwater icequakes or volcanic activity, the former were eventually ruled out by experts in aquatic villip phonology. This sound, recorded by Yumatha and published to the Luminoss Domain of Oceanography during one of his travels, had a unique characteristic about it that has come to be known as the "Howl", or by others as the "Bodoop." Though faint in the recording, it is thought that due to the distance and density at which it was recorded, the Howl would burst the ear drums of any known living being capable of hearing at standard atmospheric pressure on Yuuzhan'tar. Wild theories began to tear a hole through the scientific community rife with thoughts of great beasts below in the ocean's depths, or perhaps an unknown intelligent life form dwelling at the bottom of the ocean attempting to communicate. A project of massive proportions was launched to record the sound to no avail - the intrigue of the sound has only grown.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Balta Gnash

The Mud Volcanoes, named by the explorer Yamatha as the Balta Gnash, is an array of carbon dioxide spewing mounds of sediment and mineral deposits near the entrance to Sen'tholl, acquiring several hundred kilometers of landscape around the northern mouth. To view the Balta Gnash, even in the dark of the Sen'tholl Fha, is to witness several thousand landslides occurring like the coming and going of the tide. As the land moves like water, this vast stretch of uninhabitable terrain poses a great threat to any fauna that might try to make it's habitat within. Yamatha, during his travel past the Balta, notes that he kept his distance but felt the pull of his vessel towards the heated gases emanating into the dark cold.

Tholl'tseg

Tholl'tseg, known in the Yuuzhan Vong tongue as "the Deep Point", applies to locale in which Yamatha encountered the infamous "Howl". The void of the depth, in which there is no declared bottom, was described akin to staring into the reaches of hyperspace travel. No traveler has spent more than a recorded hour here, for which Yamatha still holds the record twenty years later. Pressure readings on the vessel read sporadically, and violent changes in water density are to be expected, making traversing this water nigh impossible.

Akul Plas

Akul Plas, known as "The Ice Crack", is a formation of several underwater glaciers that have compressed due to the massive pressure and cold of the depths of Sen'tholl Fha. First noted to be near the northern mouth by several explorers previous to Yamatha's famed expedition, the noted explorer himself describes a similar mass of glaciers near the western fold of the crevice. Postulating to the behavior of these Glaciers, it is thought that during great transitions of warmth in the waters of Sen'tholl Fha the Akul Plas are capable of immensely dangerous speed across the bottom reaches of the trench. Of all the landscapes witnessed, Yamatha took care to describe these glacial structures as "the most dangerous creature I encountered during my journey."

Snagaknu

Due to the tectonic plates of Yuuzhan'tar, it is believed that Sen'tholl Fha was created in a subduction zone created between two plates. Peculiar nature, created by the surrounding plains of Balta Gnash, causes untold amounts of sediment and rock to fall into the area of the trench known as the Snagaknu. This sediment seemingly causes a chain reaction that vastly speeds up the supposed movement of the walls of the Sen'tholl Fha, causing areas around the southern mouth to violently clash together. Simulating the view of a mouth gnashing teeth together, rock and mineral quick thrust together and cause a collision between the opposing walls. This can occur several times a minute before laying dormant for hours, giving pause to explorer's during their travels. To enter the Snagaknu would mean certain death, and no living entity is assumed to be living underneath massive amount of mineral that lays below. However, it has been noted several times that this would be an idea place for further research applied to the Sen'tholl Fha, as during the violent explosions caused by the collisions, kilometers of rare minerals are thrust into the much safer water columns above.

Urgohk-Shakamub

Urgohk-Shakamub, the "Shaded Forest", lays far deeper than the Balta Gnash. For reasons unknown, the density in water here was found to be much safer than anywhere else in the trench, as the location has been marked for perhaps the only habitable zone in the entire location. Marked by kilometers of coral and other undiscovered flora, the Shaded Forest seems much calmer than the rest of the locations thus far discovered. Fauna in the area seem more violent than normal, however, and the surrounding barrier of Balta Gnash serves as a primary reason for being unable to explorer further and a reason the waters here seem untouched by time. Serving as the largest known area of the Trench next to the Balta Gnash, the Shaded Forest gives home to many of the mysteries of the deep.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Est. 100,000 BBY

The Kwa Holdings Empire discovers Sen'tholl Fha.

Est. 100,000 BBY

A cataclysmic event takes place near Sen'tholl Fha involving the Kwa Holdings Empire. The historical accuracy is unknown of this event, though it is believed the Kwa did not further interact with the location.

879 BBY

A massive explosion is recorded near the outer reaches of Sen'Tholl Fha by the natives of Serus / New Yuuzhan'tar. No further information nor detail exists of this event, though it is believed to be of great consequence in the history of the trench.

678 BBY

A large tribe of Yuuzhan Vong, abandoned by the planet Zonama Sekot, find their way to Serus / New Yuuzhan'tar. They claim it as the "Life Giver" and, despite the dangerous environment, settle on the planet. Stories of the dangerous depths of the ocean began to circulate, and natives inform the new owners of the massive trench.

122 ABY

The Ossus Project begins on Yuuzhan'tar, and onto Ossus, as dictated by the New Jedi Order. Massive amounts of sediment from the outskirts of the Balta Gnash are harvested and used for building material.

123 ABY

A large devoted faction of Myrshavong declare a rebellion against their masters in the city of Un'Rathi. After a long and hard fought war, refusing the cede victory, the Myrshavong faction retreats to an area that fits the description of the Sen'tholl Fha. How they were able to survive the depths is unknown, nor was any member of the faction ever heard from again.

428 ABY

The Gulag Plague reaches Yuuzhan'tar, denoted as "The Breath of Yun-Yuuzhan". Sen'tholl Fha remains untouched by the surface world.

835 ABY

As the surface world moves towards war with the rest of the Galaxy, Sen'tholl Fha slumbers. Yamatha conducts his legendary exploration of Sen'tholl Fha.

841 ABY

Luminoss-backed research of the trench is halted due to the siege of the Moross Crusade on Yuuzhan'tar. Much is not known of the affects the war had on the depths of the ocean, but several things have seemingly occurred since. The Balta Gnash seems more active, the Akul Plas has been rapidly moving without stop between the northern and western mouth in repetitive motion, and most strange is the Howl - recorded originally by the explorer Yamatha - has grown in the pattern of it's frequency.

This is a lovely submission that adds more depth to the Yuuzhan Vong - and the Encadre box looks great. Everything flows well and it's a very easy read.

My only suggestion would be to sweep through the history section and link uncommon events/items that other writers may not be familiar with.

Just tag me when you're ready and I'll get you on your way.
