  • Allows the user to access an Augmented Reality sensorium, blending the digital world with the real world. Messages, information about their surroundings, it’s all available without the need for cyber contacts or cybernetic eyes.
  • Allows the user to delve into the surrounding networks with their consciousness, effectively sensing and manipulating the data around them.

  • Able to provide an AR experience to the user without the need for cybernetic eyes or contact lenses.
  • Allows the user to manipulate raw data significantly faster and more precisely than they would be able to via other standard means of interfacing.
  • The implant is able to shut down the body’s functions when activated in cybermode.
  • It can also pull you out of a dive if it senses catastrophic damage, protecting the mind, but at the cost of unconsciousness as your mind tries to react to the change. (This safety features can be deactivated at the risk of death)

  • While the implant is active it paralyzes the user, preventing them from moving and hurting themselves whilst they are manipulating data. This leaves their bodies very vulnerable to physical attacks which they would be unable to stop, or even be aware of. (Think the scene in the matrix where Cypher attacks the team)
  • Connecting to networks directly means that you are vulnerable to data overload, the human brain simply being unused to that level of connectivity and access.
  • The direct connection leaves you vulnerable to feedback, viruses and other cyber attacks utilised by other slicers can have a direct impact on your body and mind.

In the wake of a cyberattack carried out in the very heart of the CIS government as part of a terrorist attack on the Viceroyalty John was forced to examine both the CIS’ cybersecurity measures and his own response.
What he found was, although he was successful in stopping the attack he primarily accomplished this through the brute power available to him through the AI EX. In comparison, the AI Nyx was able to manipulate the data more precisely, allowing her to shore up the damage and repair the systems with a speed with which John himself would not be able to match.
It was in coming back to examine how this was accomplished that John discovered that the AI had actually transferred herself out of her droid body and into the cyber realm, effectively allowing her to manipulate the data directly. While John’s holoscreen and cyberlink interfaces were fast, they couldn’t keep up with this level of speed and control. To that end, John started to design the Selkie Implant, to allow organic slicers to keep up with the AI’s levels of control.
The implant works by hijacking your consciousness, in effect transferring it to the network, replacing your body’s senses with a network sense, your reactions with the ability to directly manipulate data. In effect, as long as the implant is active it can boost your ability to slice to that of an AI.
The basic technology behind the Selkie implant is similar to that of the AJ^6 created by Biotech Industries, an implant which allowed a user to take control of computers and electronics using only the power of their brain. The Selkie sought to avoid the personality destroying side effects by limiting the use of the implant. Rather than being always on, you only needed to activate it when you needed.
Even when activated the implant has 2 levels of control, the first is a basic augmented reality, adding to your vision with data only you could see, from information for work to messages and holonet videos. The second level is when an individual would effectively leave their body, transferring their consciousness to the networks around them.
