DESCRIPTION

Since he was young John Locke had loved droids, building them, repairing them, seeing how he could improve them, it had been all he’d thought about while his friends were out playing sports and running around he was tinkering away. It was only natural then that he’d want to do it full time, make his career in the industry, and as a young boy he’d always dreamed of having a workshop. But university changed the boy’s dreams, he didn’t want to just repair machines, he wanted to design and build them.

Locke and Key Mechanics was the result of this changed dream, John sank every penny he earned designing droids for other companies and doing repairs into the company. That alone wasn’t enough but his parents saw what he was trying to do and decided to sell their house, pouring their life’s savings into their son’s dream. It wasn’t a lot, wasn’t enough to compete with the big companies, even on a planetary scale, but it paid for equipment, for a place to stay and a first line of production.

Locke mechanics started off subcontracting to other larger companies as they build up their infrastructure before they started producing parts for other droids, upgrades and modkits. John wasn’t happy with that, and seized the opportunity to gain licenses, producing droids for intergalactic companies for sale on Kiribi. These deals were the icebreakers for the company, allowing Locke and Key to expand rapidly, opening up more and more manufacturing lines as they grew to become one of the largest production companies on the planet. Yet as the production grew John retained his love of tinkering, as he started to reach for the stars opening up branches on Commenor and Denon. The decision was made to branch out to attract more enquiries, more opportunity and the best way to do this...well it was a big galaxy filled with people who needed to fly, and liked to shoot. Uptil now the company has mainly focused on repairing or providing research and assistance to others as it settled itself. This is a lucrative field and has allowed them to create and invest in solid infrastructure but now they’re getting ready to start up their first inhouse designed production and introduce themselves to the galaxy at large.

Even with the company set on the brink of revealing themselves to the galaxy John still wants to create an environment where his workers are happy and satisfied, no matter which branch of the company they work for. He knows that happy workers are more productive and less likely to be tempted by offers from other companies, either for their employment, or for company secrets. There is a certain loyalty that he has built up, both by providing support to employees in the form of trips, nurseries and housing support as well as through his personal actions. When there was an incident with the production line in their flagship factory John was there with the rescue workers helping people out, even at the cost of his own arms.

If you aren’t a client or aren’t an employee of the company though, they can be ruthless and have no compunction about undercutting the prices of their competitors, looking to force them out of the market. To the public, however, they try to keep as positive an image as possible, sponsoring charities and school trips, and providing subsidised repairs to those who can’t afford to pay for repairs for their own droids. This had the twin effects of helping the community while allowing interns and engineers hands-on experience at learning to innovate and improvise. These skills could then translate to their projects, whether designing a new joint or working on a commission of a yacht or freighter they were always able to think around a problem and come up with new and unique solutions the company could develop its reputation on.

RATIONALE

John Locke had started working as a mechanic at a young age, fixing the neighbourhood droids. This lead him to study cybernetics at university forming Locke and Key Mechanics shortly after he graduated. The company’s seed money came from his saving until that time and his parent’s life savings. This was enough for basic equipment that John used to drag the company up by the bootstraps, one trade deal at a time till it arrived at the position it’s in today. As the Main shareholder and CEO of the company at its inception John now is in a position to enjoy the fruits of his labour, not worrying about making rent anymore but able to buy his parents a new house as he aims his company for the stars.
