STRENGTHS
  • Hard Target: 'Switchback' Interceptors are exactly 4 meters around in a spherical shape. Their High Speeds and High Maneuverability rating coupled with their small size ensure they're difficult to hit even for ace pilots.
  • High Speed, High Maneuverability: 'Switchback' Interceptor Drones are created with speed and maneuverability in mind. Due to a combination of their smaller size and high output ion engine they can outpace all but the fastest Starfighters. Insofar as maneuverability is concerned they are on par with the majority of high end or specialized spacecraft. These Interceptors are made to run down and out maneuver their targets.
  • Kamikaze Interceptor: The 'Switchback' comes with only a single laser cannon as a weapon. Enough shots will damage or destroy enemy craft, especially in mass but this is not the strength of the Interceptor. Easy to field and cheap to create the 'Switchback' is programmed to literally fly into other Starfighters, destroying themselves and their targets in the collision. Lives are difficult to replace, droids are not.
  • Swarm Mode: Often fielded in high numbers equating to roughly 20 Interceptors in a single squadron due to their smaller size in comparison to larger starfighters the 'Switchback' literally swarms its targets. At such high numbers even the single laser cannon they come equipped with can take down an enemy ship if all droids target it together, if that is unsuccessful the Kamikaze programming of the Interceptors generally spells doom for pilots early on in any engagement.
  • Anti Virus Suite and Killswitch: Equipped with powerful Aegis SH13LD software to combat viruses that would otherwise compromise their programming the 'Switchback' also comes with a killswitch enabling command vessels to deactivate the Droid Interceptors if clever tacticians hack them.

WEAKNESSES
  • Almost Defenseless: 'Switchback' Interceptors do not have shields, they rely on their superior speed and high maneuverability in engagements meaning that most times a single volley of fire from an enemy starfighter is sufficient to destroy one of them. They do have a 'Short Range' Missile Deactivation Transmitter forcing enemies to rely more on their laser cannons but the short range, etc makes this an unreliable defense.
  • Almost Offenseless: Equipped with only a single laser cannon the 'Switchback' isn't expected to shoot down its enemies. Its Kamikaze Mode is its single greatest offensive capability but this destroys the Interceptor in the process.
  • Mass Numbers or Not at All: In high numbers the 'Switchback' inflicts a high rate of casualties on enemy squadrons, shoot one down and a half dozen more swarm. Their effectiveness decreases the less of them that there are. At the beginning of a battle where large numbers of squadrons are fielded it can be almost impossible for enemy pilots to maneuver through them given their kamikaze tactics but late in the battle when losses have diminished their numbers significantly the 'Switchback' becomes more of a dedicated harasser than a hunter.

DESCRIPTION
The 'Switchback' Interceptor (or SBK Interceptor) is a project pioneered by Engineers in the employ of the Hutt Space Consortium and the Black Armory Ltd. Envisioned as a way to field a mass amount of Starfighters to engage enemy fleets without losing their limited manpower the minds of many turned to Droids. An bone of contention arose though, the Trade Federation had employed Droid Starfighters in the past and these were largely ineffective in many battles. Engineers then settled on the idea that they could create and manufacture Interceptors as the first wave of Capital Ship defense backed by experienced pilots to mop up the remainder that made it through the initial onslaught. It was settled, their Hutt employers were pleased and the project gained momentum.

In a nutshell an SBK 'Switchback' Interceptor is essentially a perfectly spherical durasteel shell that houses a militarized droid brain. Armed with only a single laser cannon and without shields it could be considered a fragile craft and a failure if not for its High Maneuverability, Speed and Squadron sizes. A single 'Switchback' is little to no threat to an experienced pilot but a swarm of them almost equate to death.

The Militarized Droid Brain comes equipped with a STS-84 "Artemis" Class Targeting & Sensor System, it locks on to what it can see and will chase it down until it is destroyed or it 'destroys' itself doing the same to its target. With self preservation systems removed from the Droid Brain the 'Switchback' literally enters a 'Kamikaze' mode when engaging targets. It flies into its enemies, destroying them and itself in the process while the remaining Interceptors lock onto new targets. Due to sophisticated algorithms indicating a percentage for a successful 'Kamikaze Run' as it were 'Switchbacks' determine for themselves if the lead Interceptor to a target will be successful and then break off ensuring there is no unnecessary loss to the squadron choosing new targets in the process.

The Interceptor is not meant to last, fielded on a battlefield it is not only likely it is expected that whole squadrons will be lost destroying themselves and their targets to the benefit of the Consortium. As long as they remain cheap to field and effective the Hutt's will likely continue to dedicate whole factories to their construction.

Love the idea and the droid.
  • The image source is not good, you have to link where you found the art, not the art itself. Please use this or this as Image Source.
  • The Squadron Count's number is not good. The Very High is only 20, not 28. Please edit this in your entire submission.
    Squadron Count: [None: 1 | Very Low: 4 | Low: 8 | Average: 12 | High: 16 | Very High: 20 | Extreme: 24 ]
