ADVANCED FEATURES

STRENGTHS
  • Heavy Armaments - Following in its classification as a Heavy Starfighter, the Tempest Zero is equipped with a vast array of armaments which include heavy laser cannons and proton torpedo launchers to name a few.
  • High Defenses - Likewise, the Tempest Zero is heavily armored and maintains multiple defensive capabilities that permit the Starfighter to sustain heavier damage compared to similar starfighter designs.
  • WhisperThrust Engine - A component that has become commonplace on many Starfighter designs produced by Von Sorenn Industries and its subsidiaries; the WhisperThrust Engine utilizes supercooled gases and specialized components to trap and scatter escaping emissions produced by the Starfighter. In turn, the Engine ensures that the Starfighter produces as little wake as possible, making it difficult to detect on sensors or scanners.
  • AR-0B Damage Reduction Component - Maintaining an ablative current that courses through the hull plating of the Tempest Zero; this specialized component assists in the removal of harmful particles that may build up on the hull as a result of sustaining strikes from laser-based weaponry. This provides an increase in the longevity of the hull plating, requiring fewer visits to repair such damage or to refit the hull plating.
  • L-41c Power Converter - An older component that was first produced during the Galactic War between the Republic and Reconstituted Sith Empire; it allows a pilot to transfer the ship's engine power to the weapon reserves. This transfer allows the weapons to fire for a longer, sustained period.
  • TX-100 Component - A specialized component often seen on various Starfighters with power hungry armaments; the TX-100 boosts the vessel's maximum weapon power. A boon when one takes into consideration the large armament that the Tempest Zero maintains.

WEAKNESSES
  • Flying Barn - With a primary focus on heavier armaments and defenses, the Tempest Zero often experiences difficulty in performing the tight turns or specialized maneuvers that other Starfighters or Bombers are capable of performing.
  • Slow Moving - Due to the design focuses on heavier armaments and defenses, the Tempest Zero lacks in the area of speed; moving much slower than those Starfighters that are designed for such.
  • Low Squadron Numbers - The size of the Tempest Zero; required to ensure ample room for the weapons array and heavier defenses, has resulted in fewer Starfighters being allocated to a singular Squadron. This smaller squadron sizes means that fewer of these Starfighters can be deployed in a given operational theater.
  • WhisperThrust Engine - Though utilizing specialized components and supercooled gases to trap and scatter emissions produced by the Tempest Zero; the WhisperThrust Engine itself does not make the vessel a stealth vessel. As such, rapid movements or a sudden increase of speed immediately negates any advantage provided by the Engine; causing the vessel to become immediately detectable on sensors and scanners.
  • Forward-Firing Arc - Designed predominately as a Heavy Starfighter; the Tempest Zero is equipped with a weapon array in which the weapons are focused in a forward position. This forward coverage makes it difficult to cover secondary approaches, with the vessel needing to be steered into position to bring all of its weapons to bear on a target - leaving other arcs vulnerable to more nimble starfighters.
  • Seismic Charge Deployer - An attempt at mitigating the vulnerability of a strike from the flanks or to deal with enemy vessels to the aft; the Tempest Zero is equipped with a magazine that is capable of deploying Seismic Charges as a defenses mechanism. However, the utilization of this mechanism poses just as much a threat to the Tempest Zero - due to its slower speed and maneuverability - as it does to any pursuing starfighters or vessels.

DESCRIPTION
The Tempest Zero was first created during the Clone Wars as an experimental starfighter that was produced by the people of Valahari for Tofen's Raiders. In that time a handful of such squadrons had been built by Tofen for use by the Confederacy of Independent Systems centered around the Veil Nebula. This newer variant, produced by Astraeus Naval Ordnance for the Confederacy of Independent Systems was intended to act as an updated variant - given little information is known on the survival of any Starfighters from the original line. Though lacking certain components - such as the harpoon gun or rear-wards facing laser cannon - the Tempest Zero was redesigned to serve as a heavier hitter, with an emphasis on heavy defenses and armaments. Its vast weapon array includes several heavy laser cannons and multiple projectile launchers - though this comes at a cost in regards to the ships speed and maneuverability; with the Tempest Zero having been described as handling "like a flying barn" when attempting to make certain specialized maneuvers.

Its smaller squadron size; a result of its overall larger size when compared to other Starfighters, often means that fewer of these vessels are deployed in an operational theater. Likewise, with a design that focuses much of its weaponry in a forward-firing arc, the vessel is otherwise vulnerable to faster moving craft that can take advantage of its slower speed and maneuverability. As a means to attempt to overcome this drawback, the Tempest Zero is equipped with a magazine that can deploy seismic charges as a defenses mechanism; however, this proves just as much a danger to the vessel - due to its slower speed - as any pursuing starfighters or vessels.

Like many of the designs that are associated with Von Sorenn Industries and its subsidiaries, the Tempest Zero is also outfitted with a WhisperThrust Engine; utilized to ensure that the vessel produces as little sensor wake as possible - though it should be noted that this does not make the vessel itself stealth. Likewise, the moment that the Tempest Zero accelerates or performs any rapid movement, the advantage of the Engine is lost, rendering the vessel immediately detectable to sensors and scanners. Additional specialized components are equipped which provide an additional boost to the Tempest Zero's weapon systems - though even those components have their own drawbacks, such as the L-41c Power Converter redirects power from the engine to the weapon system, lowering the speed of the vessel further.
