ADVANCED FEATURES

STRENGTHS
  • AR-0B Damage Reduction Component - Maintaining an ablative current that courses through the hull plating - this specialized component assists in the removal of harmful debris to assist in mitigating the damage to the hull. This in turn extends the longevity of the hull plating and the duration between visits to a dedicated repair facility or shipyard for repairs or upgrades to the hull plating.
  • GalaxyGuard Mk VII - Specialized components; with three such systems capable of working in tandem - the component is utilized in providing additional endurance and operational range to the Deflector Shields of the vessel on which they are equipped. This permits the vessel to remain in engagements for longer durations as well as increasing the defensive capabilities of the vessel's shields.
  • Dedicated Carrier - Unlike previous iterations of the Dreadnaught-class; this variant is capable of filling the role of a Dedicated Carrier, capable of deploying multiple Starfighter Squadrons when compared to older variants which were only capable of deploying one or two squadrons total.
  • Automation - As a means to overcome the unusually high demand for operational personnel; multiple primary, secondary, and tertiary systems of the Dreadnaught-class are automated as a means to mitigate this demand - allowing the vessel to be deployed with a smaller crew than those that operated on older variants.
  • Phylon Q7 Heavy Tractor Beams - Arrayed near the hangar bays of the vessel, the Dreadnaught-class boasts an impressive array of tractor beam projectors which are utilized to assist in carefully guiding vessels - both starfighters and smaller craft - into the hangar bays.
  • Onboard Starfighter Repair Facilities - Following in its designation of a Dedicated Carrier, the Dreadnaught-class is equipped with a series of internal starfighter facilities that are utilized to repair the various starfighter squadrons and support craft that the vessel carries in its internal hangars.

WEAKNESSES
  • Low Maneuverability - Much like its older variants, the Dreadnaught-class was not designed to be a nimble and maneuverable craft; with the larger bulk of the vessel making it incapable of accomplishing similar feats and maneuvers that other Cruiser variants or Fast-Attack craft are capable.
  • Low Speed - Likewise, coupled with its low maneuverability, is the fact that the vessel is relatively slower when compared to similar Cruisers or other variants. This can be attributed to the need to increase additional capacity for Starfighters and Support Craft, as well as the impressive array of weapons that the Dreadnaught-class boasts.
  • Automation - As standard in many of the vessels that are produced by Von Sorenn Industries of late; the vessel is highly automated, with multiple primary, secondary, and tertiary systems controlled by automated systems and computers. To this end, these components are highly vulnerable to sustained or powerful Ion-based weaponry - and any of these systems, being disabled or otherwise destroyed by such weaponry, would place an increased burden on what crew remains.
  • Carrier Support - Though the vessel is designated as both a Heavy Cruiser, and Dedicated Carrier; capable of fielding multiple Starfighter Squadrons, it still requires additional support from dedicated carrier groups. As such, it is otherwise ill-suited to handle smaller, more nimble craft such as Corvettes, and Fast-Attack Frigates - requiring additional vessels to screen for these threats.
  • Phylon Q7 Heavy Tractor Beams - While the Dreadnaught-class is equipped with an impressive array of tractor beams, these projectors are all aligned near or around the various hangar bays to assist in drawing vessels into these areas - all of which are located on the Port and Starboard side of the vessel. Additionally, though capable of holding smaller vessels; they still have difficulty when attempting to detain larger or similarly sized vessels that are not disabled - and as such should not be utilized in such a means due to the potential hazards and damage that could be caused to the vessel.
  • Exposed Command Deck - Maintaining a similar design as seen in the Munificent-class Star Frigate, the command deck of the Dreadnaught-class is situated at the extreme front of the vessel. The location of the command deck leaves it extremely vulnerable and a prime target for enemy assault - with sufficient damage or the destruction of the command deck rendering the vessel otherwise inoperable, and incapable of continuing standard operations.

DESCRIPTION
Iterations of the Dreadnaught-class Heavy Cruiser have seen service in a number of Navies across the Galaxy, from their introduction nearly one-hundred years prior to the Clone Wars, they've served the Confederacy and the Republic alike, as well as having found roles in the Galactic Empire, Rebel Alliance, and even among a disparate collection of forces such as the Corporate Sector Authority, Chiss, and even the Hutts. The vessel has stood the test of time, and it can even be argued that variants of these vessels have survived since the Clone Wars and continue to remain in operational service - albeit with a heavy dose of elbow grease and love keeping them together. To this end, the Dreadnaught-class was designed to fill in some of those aspects that its older and aging counterparts have failed to maintain or otherwise were not designed to handle at the time of their creation and deployment in local fleets and stellar navies.

The Dreadnaught-class is the most recent iteration of this long standing vessel design that has seen deployment into the continuing wars and conflicts that plague the galaxy. The vessel was designed to be much larger than its predecessors, with an additional one-hundred fifty meters to the smaller six-hundred meters of previous iterations. This increased size has allowed for additional capacities and capabilities that were lacking in previous iterations, with the inclusion of multiple starfighter and support craft squadrons, the Dreadnaught-class is more than capable of being deployed in the role of a Dedicate Carrier while retaining its classification as a Heavy Cruiser thanks to its impressive array of offensive weapon systems. However, much like previous iterations, the Dreadnaught-class is still a slow moving, nearly lumbering vessel that is otherwise in capable of running down faster moving vessels or making the careful and nimble maneuvers that corvettes and specialized cruisers are capable of accomplishing.

Much like previous iterations, the Dreadnaught-class also maintains a number of automated systems as a means to mitigate the otherwise high crew demand, permitting it to operate with a smaller crew than normally required. This, of course, has its own drawbacks in the simple fact that with so many automated systems; they are highly susceptible to Ion-based weaponry. In the event that these systems were to be disabled or destroyed, it would place an additional burden on the smaller crew to maintain the vessel's operational efficiency and capabilities. Likewise, even though it is capable of acting in the role of a Dedicated Carrier and deploy half a dozen squadrons, it is still reliant upon additional support from within a dedicated carrier group to handle fast-attack craft such as Corvettes and Frigates that the vessel may otherwise have difficulty keeping up with or targeting when compared to larger, slower moving Capital Ships.

Sharing a similar design flaw or overall design with the Munificent-class Star Frigate, the command bridge of the Dreadnaught-class is placed at the extreme front of the vessel, which increases its chance of being targeted and thus causes it to be vulnerable. Additional defenses have been focused in this area, including one of the many GalaxyGuard components which provide additional endurance and operational range to the vessel's Deflector Shield Generators. Even with the additional defensive measures, the damage or loss of the bridge would render the Dreadnaught-class inoperable and otherwise incapable of continuing operations beyond the capacity of a heavily armed station.

All-in-all, the Dreadnaught-class is a continuation of the storied career of the famed, past iterations of the Dreadnaught-class; nor is it entirely meant to phase out or replace those older variants of the class, with the intention always remaining to operate alongside and complement the strengths and weaknesses to provide for a more cohesive fleet and overall fighting force.
