Strengths:

  • Heavily Armed: The Dreadnaught Heavy Cruiser has dozens of capital-grade turbolasers at its disposal, able to take on ships nearly twice its size without so much as a worry.
  • Proven: The design of this heavy cruiser has seen centuries of service, with the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars to the Galactic Empire in the Galactic Civil War.
Weaknesses:
  • Anti-fighter Capabilities: Rather it has none. The Dreadnaught was designed with only large turbolasers, that can't track a fast starfighter. This flaw is nullified only slightly by its single squadron of starfighters.
Description: The first Dreadnaught Heavy Cruiser design was comissioned around the time of the great Clone Wars. It was severely criticized for its large crew requirements and slow speed, which was fixed somewhat by the Katana Fleet that disappeared shortly afterwards. When the Galactic Republic was reorganized into the Galactic Empire, the Imperial Navy maintained the Dreadnaught mainly due to its abundance, using it mostly as a patrol vessel for the Empire's countless star systems.

Hundreds of years later, with the disappearance of many designs that were new back then, in 849 ABY. Imperial Death Squadron Shipyards, a company dedicated to the revival of ancient Imperial starship designs, stumbled upon old datafiles of the Dreadnaught Heavy Cruiser. After tedious research and development, the Dreadnaught Heavy Cruiser was recreated, with a few noticeable improvements.

The armament still remains the same from the Imperial era, with dozens of capital grade turbolaseers including turbolaser batteries dotting the surface of the heavy cruiser in durasteel 'blisters', so powerful that a handful of these cruisers could match the firepower of a couple of star destroyers. Defenses are the same with a standard shield generator and reinforced armor. The real showstopper is the addition of a larger hangar, allowing for a single squadron of fighters to launch from, at the expense of cargo capacity.

One fatal flaw that the MKII has over its predecessor is the complete lack of anti-fighter weaponry, with its turbolasers just not fast enough to keep up with the swift snubfighters that the enemy may launch. This is minorly rectified by the addition of the fighter squadron.

So far, IDSS has been able to produce these cruisers at a fast rate, and selling them has been no issue due to planetary governents wanting them for their defense forces and militaries hoping to fill the ranks of their navy with it.

Development Thread: None.
Intent: To provide militaries (and criminal elements) a reliable heavy cruiser to supplement their navies.
Who Can Use This: Anyone who purchases it from Imperial Death Squadron Shipyards
