AFTER THE EXHIBITION OF LIGHT

Managing to flag down his brother after the Exhibition, Makai invited the man on a small walk through Theed. It was dusk, the Exhibition itself winding down but parties and pub crawls just beginning. A chance for those who came on company business to let loose and enjoy a good time on company credit. Makai couldn't blame them - although he wouldn't be joining the crowds tonight. His party days had been left in university.

What he had to tell his brother would have made him nervous at one point, yet that point was long in the rear view. He wasn't sure to go about it in a straightforward manner - Ellie always said he was too brash on that front - but starting with pleasantries seemed quite moot. Maybe somewhere in between could be reached. Either way there were going to be come uncomfortableness with the topic.

"I've been doing a little thinking and today I had an epiphany where I finally have those thoughts finalized. Or at least more solid." A small pause, they continued to walk. "How would you feel about Kellan coming to live with Myra and I on Orron III, out in the Corporate Sector? Full time. Phoebe will be attending school in the local village, Kellan could join her. Myra and I could research and hire a...force tutor?...I'm sure such a thing exists."

A bold statement. An offer he hadn't even talked over with his wife, not that he expected problems with Ellie. Sleeping on the couch would be worth it if push came to shove.

"Kellan gets socialized and an education. The area is out of the way and safe. Myra and I never leave Phoebe alone with the nanny - there's always Dad or my Mom or Danger, otherwise she comes with us. Kellan would get the same treatment. Myra and I have been exploring getting another nanny biot, like the one we have for Pheebs, so there's another built in bodyguard."

He paused and turned to look at Balun.

"Obviously you would still be his father. I just feel this is a better compromise than sending my nephew off to an impersonal Jedi school."

They had spotted one another in the crowded promenade earlier in the day, yet while Balun had sensed his brother's intent to talk with him, he had surprised Balun and not followed through.

At the time, Balun had felt that his reluctance to strike up a conversation about his Son had perhaps led the Force to whisper that Makai's eyes were upon him, mixed with apprehension and foreboding. Yet when nothing had happened, and his brother had gone elsewhere, Balun had pushed the incident and his feelings to the back of his mind, instead listening to and feeling out the general vibe of the crowd to rein himself in.

As it turned out, Makai had sought him out in the end, saving his words until after the day had died down and what was left of the wandering populace had moved from restaurants to drinking holes, enjoying the nightlife on display in Theed City. Despite the apprehension that surfaced upon the edge of his mind, Balun once again had to suppress the growing tension, not necessarily understanding why it felt to be weighing him down so heavily.

The two of them had discussed Kellan Dashiell Kellan Dashiell , a four-year-old boy, perhaps offering them both further incentive to grow even closer. Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell and Myra Arceneau Dashiell Myra Arceneau Dashiell had Pheobe, Kellan's arrival in their lives timed perfectly for the two to be of the same age and become somewhat inseparable. The difficulty, however, came from Balun and his son's sensitivity to the Force, and from the fact that Balun were the only one in the Family who understood the weight and responsibility it placed upon them.

When they came together, Balun and Makai went through the usual formalities, small talk, and compliments about the Exhibition of Light. For a moment, he might have been convinced that he had previously been overthinking things too much...-And that's when Makai finally brought up Balun's son once again. In the most shocking way imaginable.

"How would you feel about Kellan coming to live with Myra and I on Orron III, out in the Corporate Sector? Full time.

Makai was still speaking; the moment the words left his mouth, Balun's mind reeled in astonishment. Anger immediately threatened to rise to the surface; however, he turned to look away, focusing on his senses: Sight, hearing, and smell of the environment around them in a bid to push aside his feelings. For the time being, it seemed to ground himself, and he quickly moved a hand beneath the tabard of his robes, searching for his Cigarra packet tucked within one of his utility pouches.

He paused and turned to look at Balun.

"Obviously you would still be his father. I just feel this is a better compromise than sending my nephew off to an impersonal Jedi school."

"Obviously", Balun repeated, his tone a blend of frustration and sarcasm as their eyes met once more, albeit briefly, before Balun proceeded to light his cigarra and draw in a heavy drag, sucking the toxins deep into his lungs and feeling grateful for the absence of the crowd. It wasn't a great look, being in formal white and gold attire, clearly a Jedi, smoking out in the open like this.

"We're going to need a bottle of whiskey...", Balun stated, turning towards the pub, not some short distance away from where they stood, not waiting for his brother's agreement. Balun would need the drink to dull his senses regardless, with the bomb Makai had just dropped on him; "-If we're going to have this conversation and retain the same quality of our relationship".

Makai could not possibly realise just how beneficial it was to have Jedi training kick in when anger threatened to loom over him. Despite keeping a stoic expression, perhaps showing less than his usual self if anything, Balun's usually jovial banter-like chatter had quickly been dispersed by his brother's suggestion. One that he found frankly insulting, yet would at least hear him out. Over drinks and a few more of his favourite brand of cigarras, of course.

Eyebrow raised, Makai motioned down the street lined with bars and pubs. He personally had no preference. In fact, if it was up to him they would hash this out on a walk or here in the open air. Personally he thought Balun was over reacting. It wasn't as if there was any authority in his position - brother or otherwise - to stop Balun from sending his nephew away.

He had an opinion and a solution and voiced it. In the half-Galan's eyes it was easy as a yes or no and then an explanation as to why. Makai had his feelings on the subject - strong ones - but when it boiled down to the end of the day he couldn't force his brother's hand.

Balun approached the Bar closest to them, then went inside with his brother in tow. The bar itself appeared lively, though there thankfully remained open, unutilised booths where they could sit and talk relatively privately beneath the louder chatter among the patrons enjoying the evening. Moving first to the bar counter, however, Balun noted one of the workers was visibly tense at the sight of the Jedi bearing his white and gold garments.

"Whiskey, bottle and two glasses, thanks. We'll be over in the corner booth", Balun requested, gesturing in the direction of the empty seats he had spotted upon entry. "Certainly, Master Jedi, and on the house on such a wonderful day." The response came with something of a pensive, quizzical look before he politely confirmed his order and moved to gather them.

Unlike Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell , Balun's upbringing hadn't been one where he could experiment with different drugs and alcohol. He had been raised among other Jedi until he had left at the age of sixteen. He might have rather enjoyed the notion of getting blacked out drunk during those years, but he was battling a life of self-survival and every single credit he had meant a meal in his hand. Nowadays, he was quite comfortable with a glass of spirits, though he rarely did so in response to such inspiration as tonight's conversation.

As they moved to seat themselves, the bartender brought over their drinks and excused himself, leaving Balun and Makai alone to get on with the subject at hand. Balun took the two glasses, filling both halfway with whiskey and finally urged one of the drinks over to Makai's side of the table. Resting back in his seat, he exhaled the last of his cigarra before replacing it with the glass of orange liquid, taking the first sip and feeling the mild burn as he swallowed. His preparations for this ordeal about to begin.

"I understand your feelings about the Jedi, and while I hesitate to ask, I feel I should for the sake of hearing you out and respecting your side of things. What is it that concerns you with regard to Kellan becoming a Jedi?" The final words, those Balun hadn't truly wanted to ask, as in his mind they opened a bottle of animosity and division between him and their family. He had long felt misunderstood regarding the Jedi aspect of his life, but he also wanted to give his brother the respect he was due.

Carefully Makai pushed the lowball glass to the middle of the booth. He didn't feel like drinking, such a thing was left for happier social occasions for him. Settling into the bench seat, he remained quiet as Balun poured alcohol and lit a cigarra. Oddly it struck him once again how much Balun was like their father. Makai thought at one time he may had been but it was clear as he got older more of the Kai genes had formed his personality.

Being in the care of Danger most likely altered something as well but Balun hadn't known their father until now. This seemed more innate.

Brow furrowed as his brother mentioned the Jedi. Makai wasn't sure what that had to do with this situation at hand. It was a factor but not the overall driving force in this situation. Instead of wasting his breath with schematics, Makai would just work with it. Maybe as he explained more, then again, maybe not.

"I have no quarrel with Kellan becoming a Jedi."

Overall for the most part, true. Makai would prefer his nephew choose a different path considering their family had come into privilege. Credits not being a concern offered a certain amount of freedom to study and work in a different manner than many had to.

"I have issue with a young child - one who already has been abandoned by his useless mother - dropped off to study in an residential capacity. I do not find it conductive to a healthy emotional wellbeing later in life." Makai paused, unsure of what to share. "It took years of intensive therapy to undo the damage that occurred to me as a small boy. I see the same thing occuring here."

Balun had zero idea. He preferred not to talk about his childhood with his brother but Kellan was important.

"An eleven or twelve year old heading off to live in a Jedi school? Makes sense. A five year old does not."

"I have no quarrel with Kellan becoming a Jedi."

Balun's eyebrows lifted in surprise at Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell 's initial response, his back straightening slightly as his posture shifted while he tried to digest the sentence. His brother was a lot of things, but a liar wasn't one of them, and he certainly wouldn't lie to Balun of all people. Pressing his lips together tightly, a little out of subconscious habit when encountering an ethical or emotional dilemma, he simply remained quiet and listened as Makai continued.

He frowned, though not out of frustration but of the realisation that Makai was under the impression that Kellan was going off to live at Shiraya's Sanctuary or some other Jedi Temple or Enclave, despite the fact that Balun himself did not call such a place home. Both he and Kellan had been living on Jhaessa Prime within their own Estate not far from the Capital. He had no intention of changing that.

"You ought to be pleased to know that I've never had any intention of my Son living at the Temple, then. His home is, and always will remain, on Jhaessa Prime with me. The only times where he's been without me have been during my field assignments and missions, and even then, he has Vesha to keep him busy, not to mention enjoying time with you, Myra and Pheobe; Which I have greatly appreciated by the way," Balun answered, hoping that the information might alleviate some concern of his brothers.

"Jedi students aren't typically taken on as Apprentices until the age of thirteen or fourteen, whereas someone Kellan's age will participate in a daily curriculum, the same as any other school for the most part. He will arrive on Naboo with me at the start of each day, and return home in the evening just as I do. There's no need for him to have to live there".

He took another sip from his glass of whiskey, followed by a long drag of his cigarra, letting a momentary silence pass between them in the hope that Makai understood and believed what Balun was telling him.

"As far as childhood trauma is concerned, his upbringing is nothing like yours or mine. He has everything going for him, a loving family and a best friend in Pheobe. Yes, his mother isn't around, and quite frankly, I hope it remains that way. That aside, there are good reasons behind why I want him surrounded by those who are aligned with the Lightside of the Force, setting aside the fact that he seems excited to join the Jedi, I don't want him following in his mother's footsteps".

Eyes narrowed slightly. Makai didn’t quite believe his half-brother. There was nothing in their short past to indicate Balun would lie to him but at the same time, he suspected if push came to shove the other would lie to prevent any interrogation.

“I see.”

A small comfort if true. Yet Balun was wrong on one front - in many ways Kellan was growing up exactly as he had. Single father who was busy. A bit of an outcast. A mother who had left at a critical juncture in life. Kellan had no Danger-esq figure in his life but if Makai thought enough about that he and Myra were basically that role. A small little comfort of normalcy when your life was anything but.

Makai didn’t expect his brother to understand. Given the other was dumped on the doorstep of the Jedi and regarded the faceless group as his family, Balun didn’t understand the intricacies of growing up in the manner he did and now Kellan. Makai was aware it was one of the reasons he was so attached to his nephew, he saw his past staring at him and was determined to make a difference.

“Fearing something might create a self fulfilling prophecy. Constantly worrying about him showing any small signs of being like his mother may only drive him to well, being like his mother. It’s like if I constantly worried Myra was going to divorce me. Same concept.”

It was an odd concept to fear a child. He had real concrete worries for Phoebe ; illness, the inability to protect her, the girl not growing up happy. Who his daughter was growing up to be was rarely one of them. A headstrong girl currently molded by family who was on track to become a determined woman. As long as Phoebe was happy, Makai had little concern about what path she would take.

“Is he excited to join the Jedi or excited to please you? Does Kellan at this age sense that your love is tied to your desires?” Perhaps he was sounding now a little like his old therapist. “If Kellan was to become, I don’t know, a Sith let’s say, would you turn your back on him?”

Balun frowned, leaned back into his seat and brought his cigarra back to his lips, taking another deep drag into his lungs as he considered his brother's words. Makai made it sound like Balun's love for his son was contingent upon his becoming a Jedi, which was not at all the case. However, that was not to say that Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell wasn't correct on at least one point that occurred to Balun while they had been speaking. That which Balun would reiterate to his brother, to concede and confirm that Balun had indeed heard and agreed with part of his argument.

"Worrying about that which has not yet occurred will only lead to further harm in the long run. That you are right about" Balun spoke up, exhaling cigarra smoke as he uttered the words, pausing to inhale a breath of fresh air before clarifying from the perspective of his Jedi learning, "As Jedi, filling our minds with negative thoughts can distract us from the present moment, and the insight that the Force may provide".

Makai could not relate to the Jedi way of thinking and seeing through the Force's extension, but that did not mean he lacked his own sense of wisdom and maturity. Balun knew this better than most, as he had always looked up to his brother, and there were few matters that would come between them where Balun would stubbornly maintain the lead on, refusing to budge to anyone's opinion. Kellan, his son, was on such a matter. But even so, he wasn't so arrogant as to be unmoving when foresight was offered.

"And yes, Kellan does want to be a Jedi. He appears genuinely excited about it. If he wasn't, then I wouldn't be so confident about this direction for him..." he spoke more, pausing this time to take another swig from his glass of whiskey. So far, the conversation had been manageable; Makai hadn't said anything too triggering for Balun, nothing worse than the suggestion of Kellan living away from his father, at least. All in all, Balun was pleased that he had taken the time to sit this one out and talk it through with his brother. They both needed to get through this hurdle that lay between them.

"Stars forbid, he became a Sith, he would likely wind up killing me as I repeatedly tried to bring him home. The Sith don't view murder in the same way civilised society does, and the dark side corrupts even the best of us if we allow it. If Kellan went down that path, I would commit everything to trying to bring him back".

Makai stared blanky at his half-brother as he mentioned his nephew potentially murdering his own father should he go down a darker path. Sitting here he could name at least three darksiders he personally knew that had real families. It seemed they had not been murdered by their own blood yet if he were to bring up that point no doubt is brother would have an instant counter argument to fit a narrative.

"So Sith are incredibly dangerous unless being led by your baser desires and hopping into bed with them?"

Hand ran through his hair, a little incredulous feeling at his brothers argument. Makai wasn't going to push much further fearing he would get dirty details of how Balun was seduced and he really didn't know what he was doing. That was the last thing he wanted to hear this evening.

"Either way, I would expect a Jedi Knight of your status to handle this issue. Seems this is what you're trained to do from birth, fight the Sith and all that."

Makai could easily see this being a circular argument and a headache was creeping into his right temple. It was clear there wasn't much he could do in the grand scheme of things. He would put a lid back on his concerns and continue to share them with Ellie and go from there. Given they were moving to the Corporate Sector and Balun staying in High Republic space, soon they wouldn't been seeing much of one another.

"I'm not going to say anything further. I've said what I had to say."

"If by hopping into bed with them, you're meaning Kellan's mother, you should remember that she was a Jedi when I met her, and we grew up together as childhood friends. We knew each other our entire lives, and yes, we did eventually wind up fighting one another, which very nearly resulted in us killing each other," Balun replied rather bluntly, finding his brother's response less than satisfactory.

He didn't need to explain to Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell the pained experience of a life-long friendship ending in such a violent and traumatic way, forced by not just Nouqai's actions but the will of her Sith Master's influence and the lure of the Darkside of the Force. Unfortunately, Balun wished that Makai might understand his point of view. Sadly, he knew that his brother could not, but this did not stop him from wishing otherwise.

"I would like to believe that you and I could simply agree to disagree on this subject, and there be no hard feelings, but I'm sensing that doesn't appear to be the case here", he further remarked, raising his glass though speaking first before bringing it to his lips and taking another swig as he eyed his brother. He didn't like how Makai had spoken of Balun bedding Nouqai; it was a cheap blow and a crude jab at him during an already tense discussion. Kellan's mother was a difficult enough conversation at the best of times.

"How'd you hear I'd been Knighted?" He asked suddenly, the thought occurring to him rather late; "It happened on the ass-end of a disciplinary hearing, it wasn't a public ceremony. I'm surprised you're aware of it. I haven't told anyone".
