Location: Voss, ruin of the Silver Jedi Temple.
Open to: Padawans and Knights of the Silver Jedi Concord. But of course, Masters are free to come and visit!

The Sephi stood on her toes, squinting as she studied the serene expression of the simplistic statue. Or more accurately, what was left of it. Most of the statues were blackened by energy weapons, had partially crumbled or were outright destroyed in an attempt to erase the presence of the Jedi. The locals hadn't forgotten about this place, but to them it was nothing but a ruin. A ruin that had once been a stronghold of Light, and a temple of the Silver Jedi. While there was little left of it, it felt more whole than ever to her.

The remains of the temple were overgrown by all sorts of plant life, enveloped by nature itself. A brief stroll through what used to be the central hall had shown her that this place still connected to the Light side of the Force. It was still a stronghold of the Light side and the Living Force, which made it all the more perfect to her. Perfect enough to serve as training grounds.

Yes, the announcement that had gone across the Student Database of the Jedi Comport had been real. This class would be held on Voss, in the remnants of the old Temple. It wasn't mandatory; even being listed as an advanced class of sorts, although it was still recommended. Sakadi rarely if ever taught large groups or classes, but this was one of the few subjects she felt needed to be addressed. Too few Jedi had been taught the technique that was Force Stasis, despite its general usefulness. And knowing reliable techniques could be the difference between life and death in this war-torn galaxy; something she knew and had experienced firsthand.

That was why she gave this class today. She had purposely left it open to Knights as well, in case they wished to expand their skill set. But would any show up? Only the Force knew. All she could do, was wait for the students to arrive.

If you want to teach well, humble yourself to learn from other teachers. A Gamorrean matron had taught him that once upon a time. And though Quill enjoyed teaching the Force, he'd also spent the bulk of the last...well, a long time...as the Hermit of Hoth. Teaching was as perishable a skill as the lightsaber.

All that to say, he showed up as just another student, albeit older than most. He tended to prefer back corners. The overgrown remains of the central hall offered plenty of them.

"Master Sinvala? I'm Quill. I was hoping I could sit in and learn a thing or two."

Off to the side, sitting on top of one of the broken statues, was Algo, watching the scene below him. He wore his standard training outfit, and his white hair glinted in the sunlight. So far, not much has happening...

He had expected this training to have a little bit more training in it, and not so much sitting around and quiet. He had arrived pretty early, but still, why was everyone taking their sweet time to show up? It pained him, all the sitting around and the silence. And did he love pain. Of course, it wasn't enough to start to make him lose control, or even to make his hair start turning black, but still, it gave him some relief.

Then, the others started showing up. First, this incredibly old man came up, asking if he could sit in and learn. Well... the message had gone out as available for everyone. Between the old man, Algo, and Master Sinvala, they all had white hair. Perfect, they were the White Hair Gang...

Then, came in this weird Togruta girl, who was strangely familiar, but he just couldn't put his tongue on it... Wait... wasn't she an experiment? Whatever the case, she hung back. Weird girl, even for an experiment.

"Took you guys long enough!" He said to the newcomers. "You guys really need to be better at your time management. I've been here for ages!" He chuckled.

This was going to be a fun meeting...

Phalsi had been slow to arrive, checking and double checking the location of the class. Confusion had given way to just chasing down the coordinates before long as she strolled through the area with a curious eye over the ruins. A temple like the one they were housed in? A once great structure brought to ruin but still standing against everything.

She gave little more than a passing glance to the boy on the pillar, and nodded to the Togruta that was here. By herself no less. She had read somewhere they were inclined towards working in large groups, or maybe it had been living in large groups. It was hard remembering anything from late night holo-net dives down the rabbit hole of following associated things.

There was an older man present also, seeming to keep himself apart from the whole of things as she frowned at the scene. The sephi ahead of her was the teacher, and taking a page from her own master, she strode over to the woman, giving a nod before speaking.

"Phalsi. Real lively bunch here." She joked, looking up to pillar boy again before glancing at the others before letting her gaze fall on Sakadi Marathi Sinvala Sakadi Marathi Sinvala once more.

Aveline had never been to Voss before. She was glad this lesson had given her the chance. It was hard to not be distracted on her way down to their agreed meeting point. Later, Aveline, she told herself. There would be time to explore later. As was common with these classes advertised through the Jedi Comport, a shuttle from the Silver Rest temple on Kashyyyk had been provided.

As soon as she arrived she recognised Phalsi. She gave the girl a big smile accompanied with a wave, and walked over to her. Hopefully she'd be as appreciative of a familiar face, and not think 'oh Force, her again?', but Aveline took the chance. The social life of Kashyyyk had thus far been kind to her. The host of this lesson, Sakadi, was of course another familiar face. She was excited she got the chance to learn from her again, though hopefully no spiders would be involved this time...

"Master Sakadi" she gave a formal bow to the lesson's host, then turned with a smile to the rest of the gang. "I'm Aveline." She felt 'Padawan Cuiléin' sounded too formal. Besides, with her light brown Jedi robes and tunics she felt she communicated her status well enough. From her own point of view if nothing else, she did not have the 'feel' or even swagger of a knight.

Her examination of the statues was cut short by the first attendant to speak up. An older man who introduced himself as Quill, and judging by his Force presence, he was a fellow Jedi Master. Her lilac eyes studied his features for a moment, shifting over the rough scarring, silver white beard and finally resting on the wise and humble brown eyes. She met him with a warm but dissonant smile and a slight bow, before she reached out through the Force. "Of course, I'm glad to have you here." The telepathic messages were more gentle nudges than invasive thoughts; a result of her years of practice. Nevertheless, she understood why many Jedi considered her manner of speech to be intrusive. "Oh, and feel free to call me Sakadi."

The arrival of her fellow Master was closely followed by that of a Togruta girl, to whom she waved as a greeting. It seemed like their numbers would be low, but perhaps that was a good thing. Force Stasis was an advanced ability and with only few Jedi present, she could be far more personal in her instructions.

"Patience is second nature to a Jedi, Algo. Sadly, that often results in us arriving late to the scene." She usually preferred to state something along the lines of 'A Jedi arrives precisely when he or she means to', but if that were true she had a lot of explaining to do. The boy who sat atop one of the broken statues had been quite early, and had given them the time to exchange names and pleasantries. Something she hoped to do with all students present. That was why she swiftly responded to the fourth attendant as well.

"If you're referring to the Temple, Sith happened" It was for all to hear, but that did not make the pun any better.

After Aveline arrived as fifth, and possibly final attendee, Sakadi again reached out. This time, to all five Jedi simultaneously. "Welcome everyone. I hope you've enjoyed your stay on Voss so far." The Voss were still rebuilding from the recently fought battle, but that took nothing away from the planet's natural beauty. "I intend to use the remnants of our old Temple to host a couple of classes, much like this one, in the near future." She had never been fond of the training facilities and simplistic classrooms available on Kashyyyk or Commenor. Most of what she taught, she taught far away from the Temple grounds. It was her personal preference, and one she hoped to share with the Padawans, Knights and Masters of her Order.

"As for this class in particular, we will be focusing on a technique known as Force Stasis. One I highly recommended learning to any Jedi." Her gaze shifted between the attending Jedi. "Now then, are any of you familiar with the technique? And if so, would you mind enlightening us all?" As with any good training, the Jedi Master had some explaining to do before the actual practice began.

Telepathically connected to those gathered close by, Sakadi would feel the presence of another closing in. Like a cool soothing spring or even a soft warm or pleasant snow with big flakes drifting down on air so still and quiet one could hear the flakes hitting the ground. Accompanied by the icy smells of the first snows of winter. Rather than bone-chilling, this was calming and soothing, almost refreshing to some. It was thin that another figure slipped around the corner, slowly taking in the sights.

She stood a little over a meter and two thirds with pale white skin and hair. Simple Jedi robes in colors of snow and sky wrapped around her. Coming into the dimmer interior, she pulled up the lenses over her eyes and took in the place in without filters. She noted the boy up high immediately, between his bright hair and infrared signature he was easy to spot. Spotting the others she shuffled her way forward, picking over uneven flooring buckled from bombardment and vandalism. She could feel the vitriol and hate spewed all over the walls and at the temple proper. But it was childish, foolish, misguided. This was a sanctuary of life, of light, and of the living force. Beneath that attempt to defile this place, it showed like a beacon. Her shoulders seemed to drop a little more as she relaxed, taking in the plants and grasses around them. The vines that climb old statues and pillars, reaching up toward the light. Mosses grew in dim places. Even little trickles of water that dripped down from on high feeding all below.

The temple might not have been what it once was. But in many ways, it was more than it was before.

Flashing Aveline a smile she patted the girl's shoulder as she moved slightly ahead of the others. ~Apologies for my lateness. I'm Desbre Gensan.~ She'd been on the same transport as Aveline, but had stopped to look at a few things that put her farther behind than she expected. And as a result, she was late. But at the same time, rather than getting out a mental cudgel and beating herself bloody with it, she simply let it be. She wasn't that late, and taking time for herself was something she hadn't really done in years. If nothing else it was necessary for her mental health. Better to ask forgiveness rather than permission.

Stepping back she nodded to Kuxirra, then turned her attention to The Old Man and tilted her head. She hadn't seen him before, but she could almost smell the cold on him. His comment about using his mental grip to hold people still made her consider for a moment, frowning. "I don't think so," she agreed out loud.

A knowing smile crept across Phalsi's features at the pun Sakadi Marathi Sinvala Sakadi Marathi Sinvala used to describe the place. The telepathy wasn't fought against, a twitch of her head and a slow wandering look around before she focused on the master with narrowed eyes did follow the telepathy however. As if curious about the whole thing. She didn't chase that particular rabbit however as Aveline Cuiléin Aveline Cuiléin arrived.

There was a large smile as she mimicked the wave back, a small dance of joy happening at the arrival of someone she knew. Sakadi spoke of their lesson setting before asking if any had knowledge of the skill they were attempting today.

Phalsi shook her head, eyes roaming over the others as they gave a general consensus of not knowing. Jend-Ro Quill Jend-Ro Quill made mention of using Force grip to hold something, but this stasis business sounded different than that. Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri gave an answer that had her quietly wondering about the depth of meaning behind the words, a possibility of something to do with the white haired one atop the pillar she supposed as she focused on the master once more.

Aveline was ready to learn! Her mood was ideal, and even in this run-down temple she felt pretty comfortable. She might as well have been on Kashyyyk, and felt nearly equally comfortable. Much of this was thanks to Phalsi Drynchen Phalsi Drynchen 's returned enthusiasm when she approached, and the feel of Desbre Gensan Desbre Gensan 's familiar tap on her shoulder as she passed her by. She was in good company, with friends she knew and future friends she did not yet know.

It wasn't a class without someone whispering to another, trying not to get caught by the teacher. "Hey! How are you? Do you live on Kattada? I haven't seen you on Kashyyyk, I think" Aveline at least tried to keep her voice low, as she spoke to Phalsi Drynchen Phalsi Drynchen . To Aveline's knowledge, this was only their second meeting. With the first being near the Jedi Temple on Kattada, and the one on Voss seeming barely inhabited at all, she was curious where Phalsi spent most of her time.

To Sakadi Marathi Sinvala Sakadi Marathi Sinvala 's question, Aveline regretfully had no answer. It seemed like she wasn't alone, so there was little shame in it. She guessed it had something to do with making someone stand still, but Jend-Ro Quill Jend-Ro Quill had implied as much. Aveline simple shook her head slowly, when she felt Master Sinvala's gaze fall upon her.

She hoped the Jedi Master wouldn't be too disappointed in them. On the flipside, this meant they were clearly lacking something which gave Master Sinvala a fantastic opportunity to help them cover up a weakness and gain a better understanding of the Force in the process. Yay!

"Perhaps that would've made a good demonstration" She projected, her disembodied words accompanied by a silly grin. "But you're not that far off. Force grip is in many ways similar to Force stasis." The Sephi began her explanation by highlighting what they already knew. "With Force grip, you could achieve the same results, although it would require a lot more effort." With a simple gesture, the Jedi Master summoned six evenly sized pebbles to her hand. "Unlike Force grip, however, we don't apply physical force to restrain our targets."

Sakadi raised her arm high, still holding on to the pebbles. "What we do, is cancel out the motion of our targets. To slow them down..." The Sephi opened her hand, sending the six pebbles plummeting toward the ground. "Or..." Her hand swiftly clenched into a fist again, a motion that would send a ripple through the Force. Now at the height of her waist, the six pebbles froze in place. "...Suspend them in place."

"Now. Since this is a technique unlike any other you're likely familiar with, there's no 'right' way I can teach you. You will have to develop this largely on your own." There were many ways she could assist them, but if there was one central theme among all her given classes, it was that she liked to see students struggle. "Find yourself a pebble, or something else you can drop. You will have to focus, reach deep inside and communicate with the Force to achieve the desired result."

The Jedi Master lowered her arm, releasing the pebbles from her hold. Some clattered as they hit the flagstone tiles, others made no sound as they landed on a bed of moss. "Try to get a feel for it first. See if you can slow something down. Then we'll move on to something challenging."

The explanation and the demonstration both made sense. It wasn't a grip per se, and not quite a sapping of kinetic energy either. It was more like asking that energy to wait, thanks very much. The implications were staggering. He'd heard once of a lethal alien weapon that could convert kinetic energy to thermal - the faster a target, the deader it got. How that worked with relative motion (this planet and system were already whirling), he couldn't say. He was no physicist.

The ruined Jedi temple offered plenty of crumbling rubble. He gathered a handful of small chunks and started letting them fall one at a time. His instinct was to catch them with the Force, but stasis was a different kind of grip, wasn't it.

After a few pebble drops, they started slowing down, sometimes stopping altogether.

Phalsi half leaned, still listening to the teacher speak since there was no way of not listening to telepathy. "Not bad. You? I live on my ship actually. I just kinda live wherever I park." Phalsi shrugged with a growing smirk. It was both nice and terrible. She couldn't easily slam her door in someone's face, but it was nice acting like you weren't home when someone banged on the hull.

With the explanation given, Phalsi scooped up some pebbles and sitting down, looking them over at first before tossing them up and wondering how she would imagine something slowing down. She thought of a number of things. The reaction gel that was used to stop a fall she had seen on the holonet was a good example. Acted like a cushion but didn't outright stop movement. But that didn't seem to be the completely correct thing.

Or maybe it could be.

She tossed another pebble up, making herself remember how the gel acted in the demonstration in slowing the fall but not stopping it as the lazy hand motion aided a little in the slight slow fall of the pebble. Eyebrows shot up in excitement of seeing a result, granted she had seen something similar in her mind already.

But this was the force doing what chemical compounds did in the real.

She practiced more, eventually running out of pebbles but getting to the point of the falling pebbles being in a near stop they were moving slowly enough.

"Oh I'm good." she said with a grin, though tried to mask it immediately after in case it got too obvious she was chatting away in class. "Ohh you have a ship, that's so cool. You can go wherever you want probably." Aveline liked the sound of that. "I've been assigned to a ship too. It's not mine, but it's because- oh" seemed like the time for idle chatter was over, and they actually had to do stuff!

Aveline stepped over so that she had a little zone to herself. She closed her eyes and reached out a hand towards the pebbles Sakadi Marathi Sinvala Sakadi Marathi Sinvala had used in her example. They began to tremble, before three of them slowly lifted and floated into the palm of her hands. That little trick she had worked out. To slow them, or seize them in time or whatever she had said, should be easy enough.

Aveline held the pebbles up high... Focused... Dropped them and... They all hit the ground, no sign of having been slowed what so ever. "Okayy." she said to herself, a little annoyed. Deciding to focus on one instead, she picked it up and threw it up high in the sky. As it slowly went from ascending to descending, she brought all her attention towards it. She was trying to feel the pebble, and everything immediately surrounding it.

The pebble still hit the ground, but this time it had definitely slowed! It had picked up some pace as it came down from a higher point, but it had given Aveline more time to work it. In the end, it had become something of a smooth landing. Progress! Heartened that she wasn't a complete failure, like in the Force Light class, she picked up another pebble and repeated the process again, and again.

Des moved to sit. Scanning the area, eyes closed, but with the Force, she found a few rocks that were the size of small river stones. Imagining them in her palm as a 'done deal' she held her hand out. They trembled slightly then zipped toward her to land in her waiting palm. By all rights what Master Sakadi explained and demonstrated broke all traditional rules of physics.

She'd been able to slow things down or stop them when thrown at her, both by pushing back or taking a hold of them in the Force. Barrier had also stopped projectiles before. But she wasn't being asked to use the Move Object power from the Alter set of abilities. This was... different. She levitated one of the stones over her hand. She felt it's weight, it's imperfections. She knew how to shatter it, how to balance it. She could feel the pull of gravity. She easily canceled that gravity out by holding it aloft. But that wasn't what she was being asked to do. That much she knew.

Letting the stone drop back into her palm she thought it over. The image of letting the object float on the surface of water came to mind. But no, that was providing a buoyancy force. Not the same thing. This was akin to suspending all acting forces on the object in question, rather than specifically countering gravity. There were a lot of implications behind that.

So she began to tally up those forces and relationships. making a list. At the same time a model of what would need to happen. The pebble would have to essentially attain a sort of geosynchronous orbit. If it were to actually "stop" it would shoot across the room at a few thousand kilometers per second. The planet was orbiting a star at thousands of kilometers per hour, rotating about a thousand kilometers an hour, and the star itself was hurling through space at incredible velocity. So it had more to do with local relationships.

Except the same stone rested within the galaxy-spanning energy field of The Force. And it was something that could act on all other things in the most remarkable of ways. It allowed someone like her to lift a speeder without ever touching it. It allowed her to manipulate heat and keep herself warm when she should freeze to death. And even generate more heat. She'd heard from a speech given by one of the old masters that it was created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together.

The relationship to consider here was The Force. Considering that it was an energy field, it had no weight or mass, but it could impart energy to things with mass. But more than that it was an ever-present medium. Holding up one of the stones, she hefted it, then gave it a small toss, feeling it's weight again.

Balancing it on the tips of three fingers she held it up. The Force became like a cloud, a web, a grid, a matrix that flowed around and through her, the stone, around all of them in her mind. She imagined the lines between it, the rocks, the sky, the planet's core, and more, all of it within as suddenly hardening. Those relationships, she focused hard on them, doing her best to make them static in her mind and unchanging.

She began to lower her hand. The stone stayed in place for a moment before it dropped. Success!

Reaching out she tried again. It floated for a full second. Then dropped.

It was getting easier now, as she felt the difference, the changes. She felt the sensation of what it was like in the Force, and that she focused on more than the intellectual component. Five seconds. Again. Ten. But it was difficult. The Arkanian began to sweat from the effort, oblivious to the rest of the class, her focus narrowed to a single point. But she kept at it, not letting herself feel discouraged. But she wasn't satisfied, not until she'd managed to keep the stone floating in the air for a full minute.

Then it was time to do it with two stones. She managed it for maybe a second. Then again, coming in at two seconds. Then ten. But she was building the neural connections, feeling the sensation, refining her technique with every try. After several more minutes, she managed to get two to stay in the place where she directed. Then it came time to add a third, this she had to do using telekinesis for first. But now, it was more like telling the object and the Force to "stay" rather than exerting force on it directly.

And stay they did as she relaxed. That was the main thing to focus on, that she wanted it to stay in place, rather than counter-balancing everything, as though imagining the stones webbed or... velcroed into the fabric of space and the Force. Shakily she wiped her face then leaned back on her hands, still concentrating on keeping those little rocks exactly where she'd left them. "That is so weird, and one of the tougher things I've done," she commented out loud. "As far as techniques go."

Z89V35n.png

She calmly observed how the group began to pick up some of the many rocks and pebbles that littered the Temple's floor. With her fingers laced loosely behind her back, the Sephi strolled from one learner to another. Watching them make progress and get a feel for the technique was something that brought her joy. It took effort, failure and persistence to master Force techniques. But that made every little step taken in the right direction only more rewarding. And that was something she recognized.

Once the Jedi Master saw visible changes in velocity, she would reach out again.

"I'm seeing some great progress so far! It makes me wonder… would any of you like to try something a bit more challenging?" Sakadi proposed, confident that they were ready for the next step. Slowing pebbles was great development, but on that scale the technique wouldn't really be of any use. No, if she wanted them to actually utilize the technique, the Jedi Master would have to up the stakes.
