The Piantans' recorded history dates back roughly fifteen thousand years, and their history is dotted with numerous wars and conflicts. But they have not had a major war amongst themselves in more than a thousand years. Their pace of development has been hampered by their lack of diverse metallurgical resources and their lives being spent almost entirely underwater where such things as fire, steam, etc. are hard to and sometimes impossible to attain artificially. They were contacted at the same time as the Delfinos shortly before Crossroads Prime was colonized. They did not partake in the Crossroads-Eriadu War, but supported the CRAF seeing as they were their loyal protectors and they despised the harsh Eriaduan mining company which heavily polluted the small area they operated in. Since then, the Piantans have been clever merchants, and crafty hotel and casino owners, able to operate modern machinery and technology and have established themselves as the clearly-dominant economic players on their world. Some adventurous individuals have thrived in small colonies on Delfino as well, and their numbers there are growing.

- Soft fleshy bodies with a built-in shell which they are able to withdraw their bodies into. The shell gets larger as they age.
- They have small hands with a thumb and several fleshy but strong fingers.
- Reproduce with eggs and sperm injected into a cavern of some kind to contain the small eggs. Usually the eggs number several hundred and they can reproduce only once every ten years after reaching a sexual maturity age of twenty-five. Roughly 80% of eggs survive to hatch infants.
