STANDARD FEATURES:
- Ersteel SLCA core with Matrix armor reinforcements
- Impervium outer shell
- Hardened and tempered Seigurium segmented tracks
- Miniature C.H.A.R.M. 01 reactor
- Proton Mk I Auxiliary Droid Brain
- Broad spectrum sensor suite
SPECIAL FEATURES
- Semi autonomous activation: when fired, the Shredders can utilize their sensors to calculate the moment at which they need to accelerate and adjust their trajectory for maximum impact.
- Capable of tracking: Comparable to a guided missile, the Shredder ordinance is capable of minutely and instantly adjusting its trajectory in order to continue pursuit at the coordinated and designated target. Unlike missiles though, their trajectory changes are limited in a linear fashion, meaning they can't do maneuvres like U and J-turns.
- Spiked outer rotating tracks: These tracks allow for maximum damage, as they effectively shred through and across their target, ripping and tearing through material as opposed to puncturing.
- Remote detonation: when the shredders are no longer capable of spinning and rotating, their internals can be overloaded in order to create a small, but powerful hypermatter detonation.
- Much higher damage potential: Due to the nature of this ordinance, it is designed to cause maximum damage by way of shredding through its designated targets rather than puncturing, making repairs all the harder and more costly and the overall damage can be much more impactful.
- Guided ordinance: Thanks to the built-in Proton Mk I droid brain coupled to a miniaturized C.H.A.R.M. reactor, these Shredders can traverse very large distances and adjust their trajectory in order to maximize the result of their impact upon designated targets.
- Double action: While their main purpose is to shred and tear through their targets, when they are no longer capable of doing so, this type of ordinance can be remotely set to overload and explode in a small, but powerful hypermatter explosion.
- Can be rendered inactive with electromagnetic weaponry: While small handheld weaponry will not be as effective, larger scale ship and ground-based weaponry may effectively render the Shredder ordinance inactive and inert with electromagnetic pulses of sufficient power and capacity.
- Size: Shredders are larger and more bulky than standard missiles and shells, making them more cumbersome to transport and store, adjusted weaponry is also required.
The idea behind the BR18 ordinance comes from tests regarding starfighters conducted by the N&Z, where regularly in early testing phases, starfighters would have been pushed to their limits and used to impact upon the company's strongest materials to understand resilience and strength of materials, but also the starfighters themselves. In several of these tests, it had been noted that starfighters which where set to impact in a rotational motion managed to far more catastrophically damage materials. From this point and these calculations, the N&Z engineers of the EnSol division embarked on a series of tests where they would replicate this idea for a type of ordinance that can be utilized by small to medium ships with the goal to take on targets much more sizeable than comparable ships.
The design ended up taking some liberties and some inspiration from among others vehicle tracks which theoretically would shred the ground they roll on if it weren't for the segments being smoothed to create friction without too much damage due to the adhesive principles in physics, but when one would remove the adhesive principles and would in stead utilize friction with the intent of maximum damage, the result would be sharp, segmented tracks which could effectively rip and tear through material with high rotational capacity to increase said friction and thus the capacity for damage.
The engineers of EnSol added electronic internals and code to further optimize the BR-18 'Shredder' allowing for double damage properties and to allow for semi-autonomous course correction and thus adding the principles of guided ordinance to the mix. Sadly this also added the weakness to high power electromagnetic fields.
