NaNoWriMo

So in less than two weeks, November will be coming around. It's a month famous for a few things.

Moustaches.

Delicious turkey dinners.

And the number of hipsters hanging out in coffee shops working on scripts they'll never finish increase exponentially.

I guess I'll be partaking in all of those things this year. For those that don't know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month (I guess this is a USA thing, but I have a friend in Sweden who has done the event with me in the past so I guess its really an international thing these days). I don't really stick to the 50k word deadline thing. Mostly I just use it as an excuse to write a cool project I've been thinking up.

So, oh community of other writers that we are, are any other Chaos-ees going to take a stab at writing a novel next month?

I'll be trying to get the first draft of my (short) novel done. Right now I'm about a chapter into it. I'm hoping that the whole NaNoWriMo thing will serve as a little extra motivation to get it done.

I tried this last year and it was a hot mess. Fun, but messy.

This year, I'm under contract for something else, which is really going to kill it. One book at a time is my limit if I want to have anything resembling a life.

Third time for me and I'm definitely gonna enjoy that. I hope I'll finally finish my trilogy even though I still don't have an idea for my novel's plotline... By so far, I've won every NaNoWriMo so I have high hopes for this time, as well.

I guess I'll be more of a pantser than ever before.

I also only use it for motivation. I'm not following the 50k word guideline or the timeframe of starting on the 1st and finishing by the 30th. Just spending the month doing a ton of writing on a project. I have a little writer group together for it and we're sharing stories, ideas, and critiques as we go.

You can win NaNoWriMo? ... Goes to show how much I know, haha. I'm just in it for the writing!

I'm doing it! I did Camp Nanowrimo earlier this year and I made a 10k word novelette :3

I'm planning on either continuing that (not likely), or doing a new project. If you would like a link to that novelette, here's a little synopsis:

Conscript 4-4-4-4 ("Conscript") is a soldier of the Designers, a civilization of beings at the end of time The Universe is divided between the empty blackness of a star-less sky, and an impossible energetic rift in time and space known as, the Time Storm. Conscript's purpose in life, is to be sent back in time to hunt down and destroy Subject Delta, the supposed origin of the Time Storm that is eating the universe. After being sent to the early universe, immediately Conscript faces problems with his suits fail safes, and gets caught up in an alien prophesy. It all leads to a revelation of the Designers true intent for reality, and the obtainment of unnatural powers...

If I'm doing a new project I'm stuck between two ideas:

  1. A story with just two character, a male human and female alien (non-humanoid), where the lore behind them is constructed through dialogue (they both speak their own languages, as neither of them can reproduce the others language, but can understand each other after years of study). They are both ambassadors to each race post-first contact, and this is a social experiment to see what they discover about the others race to better understand one another as civilizations.
  2. A series of horror stories for each night of November. This would be very different to me, because although I've written from the perspective of horrific figures during role play, I've never really written dedicated horror. Just the other night (around 2 AM) I wrote something that was intended to be scary, and although I don't think it's very good, it's a start. Maybe I'm just being inspired by Halloween just around the corner :p
Do any of you got any ideas of what I should? What are you going to do? :D

I must say both are really amazing. Although I personally would not be able to write the first one for 50,000 words or more. I'd lose interest or willpower to continue halfway through. Yet it would be a crazily amazing psychological novel, so... I'd support that decisions.

But the other one is equally awesome! :)

Those all sound like great concepts. On the one hand, I always find it fascinating to challenge myself as a writer. So if horror is a new, exciting challenge for you, try and tackle it! On the other hand, the psychological aspects of attempting to communicate outside of a species has always fascinated me. I don't know, man. Whatever strikes your fancy the most! :)

The concept I'm using this year is the same as the one I attempted previously, just building on it from before. It's the first part of a planned duology.

A military man goes AWOL, disgusted by what he sees as a needless galactic conflict. He strands himself on a foreign planet, blowing up the ship he used to get there. The world is pre-industrial and he does his best to blend in with the inhabitants. He wanders, trying to avoid contact with others, but as much as he tries to stay away, he is dragged into the problems of the locals time and again, until he has no choice but to assist in a continental-scale war. It's all about him dealing with his views on bloodshed, comparing galactic, to planetary, to continental, to local. There are a couple of odd twists I throw in. For instance you don't really find out why he went AWOL until much later on in the novel. He, a human, seemingly doesn't age, always appearing in his early-to-mid-30s even though the novel spans ten or more years.

I'd also be happy to share! I'm using google docs for the majority of my writing and planning. Feel free to pm me for a link :)

I would, but... Fallout 4.
I am both blessed and cursed by my computer's inability to run any newer games (basically anything post 2013). I can't play a lot of games, but I have less to be distracted by.

For my novella I've already got about 1,000 words written. Started it in May, but put it aside for awhile because of stress and school. Just picked it up again yesterday. Still on the introduction. Not sure how I'm going to transition into the first chapter, really, considering that the bulk of the story takes place 3000ish years after the intro.

That is a huge time jump. Color me intrigued.
