Old Republic, ??? BBY
Zenke Voispeh, a Naboo biological engineer, led an exploration group fascinated by aquatic life. They transformed themselves into aquatic hybrids on the planet Niamos, aiming to blend human and aquatic abilities. Zenke eventually died from complications.

Golden Age of the Old Republic, ??? BBY
Mermari expanded their underwater homes on Niamos due to human migration and pollution. Some ventured into the galaxy but struggled to reproduce with other aquatic species.

Yuuzhan Vong War & Aftermath, 25 ABY - ?? ABY
Scientist Shie'k Urd, following an interest in aquatic species, discovered the Mermari on Niamos. She studied their biology and attempted to replicate them, succeeding after a long period of frozen healing.

More humans transformed into Mermari, but the procedure remained lengthy and risky, making Mermari a mysterious and small species on Niamos. Their existence became rumors and folktales to the locals.


History expanded:

Old Republic, ???? BBY

His name was Zenke Voispeh, a biological engineer from the planet Naboo. He gained great interest in the species of Gungans and their architecture, but his interest in amphibian species did not stop there. Zenke wished to learn more about other species on other planets, so he gathered an exploration group to go on expeditions. Eventually, the group and Zenke were most impressed by the Mere of Maramere.

Zenke became desperate and obsessed with the ability to survive underwater. He believed it would be a great technological advancement if humans could inherit certain aquatic or amphibian abilities. Zenke envisioned taking the "best" traits from aquatic sentient species and applying them to humans. His group supported his ideas and dedicated their lives to his goal.

The group created a small operations base on the planet of Niamos. The planet had beautiful large coral structures in its oceans and along its beaches. Through much experimentation and the death of a group member, Zenke managed to transform the rest of the group into aquatic hybrids. Over time, they recruited more humans interested in the project and performed the experiments on them. The new hybrids even conceived children, who became the complete realization of Zenke's vision. Unfortunately, all of the hybrids died in their mid-thirties due to organ-shifting complications, forcing more human scientists to step in to care for the hybrid children.

Zenke Voispeh eventually decided to transform himself, altering the formula to avoid the same fate as the others. However, he died at the age of 55 when his heart shifted incorrectly, causing a rib to impale it.

For the next few hundred years, the species Zenke had coined as Mermari spread into the oceans, building villages onto the large coral structures in the Niamos oceans. The Mermari's human origins were forgotten, and they became secluded from other species.


Golden Age of the Old Republic, ??? BBY

As more humans migrated to Niamos and pollution increased, the Mermari retreated deeper into the oceans, eventually discovering large coral bases that they utilized as larger homes. Over time, more Mermari ventured out of their villages to explore the galaxy. Many of them died from a lack of water or ended their lineage due to their inability to reproduce with other aquatic species.


Yuuzhan Vong War & Aftermath, 25 ABY - ?? ABY

History repeated itself when Shie'k Urd, a human scientist and researcher, set out to study small colonies of aquatic species. She eventually encountered the Melodie species from Yavin 8, who were being relocated to escape the Yuuzhan Vong. Shie'k followed a particular group that was rescued and relocated to Atrisia, but she lost interest because the species did not have legs.

The scientist then decided to explore nearby planets and ultimately ended up on Niamos. Upon discovering the planet's beautiful coral structures, she ventured into the oceans to research them. During her expedition, she encountered the Mermari species. Shie'k communicated with the colony and researched their biology, leading to the discovery of their human genetic origins. She conducted her own experiments to replicate the Mermari species. Despite the different time period and mindset from Zenke, her experiments resulted in similar outcomes, with hybrid humans dying due to organ complications.

Shie'k made a breakthrough that prevented complications in creating new Mermari. She discovered that freezing a body after surgery could stop organ-shifting problems, although freezing for an extended period of time was necessary to eliminate all complications. Shie'k froze herself after undergoing the procedure, and after 50 years, she emerged in perfect Mermari form without complications. From this experience, she developed a proper procedure for creating new Mermari.


??? ABY - Present

Over time, more humans transformed into Mermari, and more Mermari ventured into the galaxy. Despite this, the Mermari remained a small species due to the lengthy freezing process and its low success rate, which sometimes resulted in death. Most humans who wished to transform were those seeking solitude, and those who transitioned often lived away from the main colonies.

In the present day, the Mermari are little more than rumors and folktales to the people of Niamos, with few aware of their true origins.

its honestly how ridiculous how far i went just to create one character... i was in a class, bored, thinking about how i should go outside of my usual boundaries and create a funky alien character (I made Chessashai Umianai but to be fair she's pretty human besides the skin) and then i was also thinking that i wanted to make a nonbinary character since enbie characters are my comfort zone (sorry Chessa...) and then as i was looking through the wiki for species i came across the unidentified aquatic species from the canon comic and then from there my brain sort of went wild. oops.
