..:: Culture ::..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Architectural Design:

Ostentatious designs, the show of wealth and power is culturally frowned upon, and in terms of other species; it is looked up in a similar light as one flashing their genitalia in public. Even the Palace from where the Empress Reigns is subdued and simplistic in its design. The pure architectural appearance of many buildings are reminiscent of that which many would call primitive or otherwise mundane.

Buildings, at least those meant for a public function, are designed to be reminiscent of the old growth forests that are spread across the world. Thus many are twisted, or are naturally grown from a series of trees that are planted or grafted upon one another to produce the desired appearance. Few buildings alter from this design, with those usually being the buildings created specifically at request by those species that have migrated to the world; specifically Osegina, which was crafted in appearance of those structures that the aquatic Akireaians dwell within.

Music / Art:

An important part of the culture, the world of Mellaniphe is known for the Art and Music that is produced by its people; so much so that it is one of the world's major exports to the galaxy. Art is seen as an endeavor worth pouring one's being and life into in order to create something unique and moving to others. Thus across the world there are multiple schools and institutes devoted to those that seek to learn and further their own abilities in creating music or art.

Art pieces are often those that show the natural beauty of the waking world around the individual. Likewise Music is crafted to move the very soul and essence of the individual, to transport them to a different world completely. Many of the artists and musicians from Mellaniphe seek out refugee and isolation deep within the old forests or far out in the steppes in a hopes of finding their own tranquility and allow themselves the freedom of crafting without distraction.

Religion:

For those beings that call Mellaniphe home, Religious beliefs are held closely and are nearly ingrained within the very fabric of their society. So much of their advancements, cultural achievements and power comes from their belief and stories of their deities. The Actaeans specifically are the most devout among those individuals that call the world home; and while they have integrated and absorbed the religious beliefs of other societies and beings that have fallen under their reign, resulting in multiple pantheons, they still worship a core pantheon that can be traced back to the beginning of their people's time.

  • Daisis - Goddess of Light
  • Sylvestris - Goddess of Fertility
  • Harlequinis - Goddess of Trickery, Secrets, and Deceit
  • Ambrosia - Goddess of Art
  • Trilliaris - The Deity of Nature; neither male nor female
  • Axillaris - God of War
  • Sycamonia - God of Death

Technological Level:
  • Space
  • Hyperdrive Capable

..:: Historical Record ::..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pre-Gulag Plague Era:

Lost in a far flung section of the galaxy, the world of Mellaniphe would spend much of the formative years of those that called it home in blissful obscurity. They knew little of the outside Galaxy at large, and seemed to care little for such thoughts. In a time before the Galactic Republic was formed, near the end of the reign of the Rakatan Empire as it fell back upon those worlds and systems that it had conquered, the beings of Mellaniphe were just beginning to eke out an existence on their harsh world.

Playing host to a trio of intelligent species, an oddity as it were, the native fauna were the most dangerous obstacle. Over time, as each of the species continued to grow and adopt a more agrarian lifestyle of subsistence agriculture, they turned to the native fauna as a means of labor and sustenance. Once the most dangerous predators were either domesticated or otherwise forced to extinction, all that remained were those intelligent species to contend with one another.

In time conflict would befall the Actaeans, Calamisians, and Droseraians. This conflict was a result in the growth of their populations and no natural predators to cull the individual species' population; and with nothing left to check their growth, conflict was bound to happen with the question begin a matter of time. As all conflicts appear to have a commonality, the conflict was a direct result of the worry of a lack of resources and the acquisition of lands as well as the placement of borders between various clans and tribes.

Sadly, many of these conflicts happen to go from simple disagreements to all out destructive wars, and thus this was the case. As time continued to push forward and old grievances went unanswered or disagreements went unsettled, the conflict grew. Even before the Galactic Republic began its own wars among its worlds, the planet of Mellaniphe was delved deep into one that would appear to destroy all sentient life. However this would not be the case.

The historical record shows that this war was one that was so destructive that it reduced nearly a quarter of the population of all species. Much of the climate and ecosystems as well as the very land were left scared or changed by the destructive conflict. Though there were those on all sides whom saw that it was time for a change, and that this war could not continue. The history of Mellaniphe shows that a tribunal of individuals hailing from the Actaeans, Calamisians, and Droseraians meet in secret at an ancient Temple dedicated to the deity Daisis; where they managed to forge an alliance between themselves and those forces loyal to those individuals.

In what would be called the Night of Enlightenment, these individuals united their forces and brought an end to the conflict. Though it would take another couple thousand years for the scars of that conflict to heal. In time however, the three species soon came together as one under the leadership and rule of the Actaeans; whom set out upon a grand scheme of rebuilding their destroyed world.

During the whole of the Galactic Events that were already set in motion beyond the scope of their own desires, the Galaxy was already engulfed within the Clone Wars before the world of Mellaniphe was once more an unspoiled world that it had been eons ago. The people of Mellaniphe hadn't even looked towards the stars until explorers from the Outer Rim Territories had begun to map out Wild Space. It would not be until the rise of the New Republic when the first Mellaniphians would see space, as their development had been stifled and purposely suppressed by the Galactic Empire to ensure that they remained on their world.

Much like the Ithorians, whom the Mellaniphians would meet upon deciding to join the New Republic, they had developed a deep respect for nature that had come directly from their destructive war. They had even returned to the worship of their ancient deities as a means to link themselves to their ancestors that lived a more simple existence before the conflict. It was this mutual respect for nature that saw the Mellaniphians opening their world and welcoming Ithorian refugees to settled upon the destruction of Ithor during the Yuuzhan Vong War.

For much of its history Mellaniphe was more or less far away from conflict, when not embroiled in its own. Thus it survived many conflicts that multiple worlds fell within again and again. They survived the Conflict between the Hutts and Xim's Empire, the Sith Wars, the Mandalorian Wars, the New Sith Wars, the Clone Wars, even the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire. Their world was so remote, that they had no worry and were right not to fear the Yuuzhan Vong whom never seemed to turn their attention to those worlds hidden in Wild Space.

With the advent of a new age, and their own developments in Hyperspace Technology, with a helping hand from a few her species across the galaxy; they began to spread from their own world, to the neighboring worlds in their systems. They came across others in their own system whom had undergone their own trials and conflicts. Thus with the Actaeans own insistence, the Mellaniphian System formed its own Federation as a means to ensure their survival.

This Federation would find its first real challenge in the Gulag Plague, which nearly destroyed the fledgling Federation of Worlds. Much of their Population suffered, even with the rather remote location of their system. As a means to attempt to avoid the staggering deaths that were reported from thousands of other worlds, the Mellaniphians toyed with stasis chambers and cryogentic sleep as a means to save as much of their population as possible; though many of their plans were either unsuccessful or meet with disaster.

Post-Gulag Plague Era:

What little of the population that remained after the Gulag Plague ravaged their world began to set upon recovering from the ordeal. It is estimated that nearly two-thirds of the total population of the Mellaniphian Federation was lost to the plague, and massive projects set upon recovery were enacted. Those couples that remained were encouraged to aid in repopulating the Federation, while those whom were single were urged to marry.

For a world that had just recently found themselves recovering from an eons long conflict, to have such a devastating blow within a few hundred years nearly brought the spirit of the Mellaniphians to the brink. They quickly set upon their own means of rebuilding and many delved into art and music as a means to escape the darkness that they felt still loomed over them.

Out of the Gulag Plague came a renaissance and great awakening for the people. Their ancient Religion was once more seen as a means of focus and inspiration. The very world around them became a means to inspire and galvanize many to create such works of art and music that the culture of Mellaniphe was soon spread across the Galaxy. Their artist and musicians so renowned that they just as much as the civil workers aided in rebuilding their world.

The Mellaniphians were raised so high, that they soon came to protect multiple worlds and systems around their own homeworld. The Mellaniphian Federation, though with little Galactic Influence as many other Galactic Governments, was more than capable of preventing Pirates from raiding more than a dozen worlds.

Netherworld Event:

With one disastrous event recovered from, it seems a cruel joke that such another should befall the people of Mellaniphe. The night of cries, as it has become known to the people, marked the disappearance of Billions of people in a single night. With many lost and families torn apart, chaos nearly fell upon Mellaniphe, and all of their accomplishments that pulled them out of the darkness were nearly forgotten.

Their influence waned as they were unable to protect their neighbors, save a few, from the chaos that followed. Yet this was not the first catastrophic event that they had found themselves pulled back from the brink. Just as they had done so before, they would once more rise and become beacons of light and hope in an otherwise dark galaxy.

Intent:

Mellaniphe and its subsequent submissions that are set to be done so upon the world's approval, are intended to open up the region of the galaxy known as 'Wild Space'. This region is otherwise often untouched upon, with its source stating that it is explored (unlike the Unknown Regions) and has various hyperspace routes into the region. However beyond that there is (as it appears), very little activity in that section of the galaxy that is ripe for creative, expansion and development of stories.

Thus this submission and those that are to link to it, are fully intended to open that portion of the galaxy. Mellaniphe is meant to be the stepping stone of such an action, and the first in a series to aid in fleshing out this rather unknown region of explored space.

Additional Note:

  • All the above included entries under those sections of Points of Interest, Native Flora and Native Fauna, as well as the Major Population Centers will all have their own Entries to be submitted in the coming days.

Well, hello! First off, I would like to say how much I appreciate how neat, tidy, and organized this submission is. That honestly makes it so very much easier to read and review.

To start us off, I am going to ask that you provide a more specific location for your planet. Identifying it in relation to another planet and/or faction on the map does the trick nicely. If you would like some specific suggestions, you need but ask, and I will gladly give - I'm very, very familiar with the map and where things are, on it, in relation to the coordinate system.

Do keep in mind the limitations for placement of a planet on the map when making your decision, that is, you may place your planet on any hex that has three or fewer other planets within it, already. Don't leave this up to someone else, or you may not like where your planet ends up!

I've also fixed a minor error that I found on my part; that being that I had forgotten to place the image source, which has been fixed.
Likewise it's been a couple days since your last response. What is the current status on this review?

My apologies! Getting back into the role of being a Judge after a break of a few months hasn't been smooth sailing, particularly with the Canadian Federal Election that happened on Monday (Change! Exciting!) and early access to the new SWTOR expansion yesterday. Add to that the fact that I work and... well, you get the picture.

Nonetheless, excuses, excuses. Shame on me. I am sorry for leaving you hanging!

It's 'eke', dear. They're scratching in the soil, not scaring a livelihood into existence, haha. Get that done for me, and give this submission another good once-over to see if there's anything else like this, if there are any passages that could be written a little better that might, for example, read a little awkwardly.

Then we'll see about sending this on to be approved and mapped!

Edited.
I've given it another look over, and from my reading and my eyes, it looks and reads fine to me. This could simply be that I am not spotting anything that looks out of place (not seeing the forest through the trees) kind of situation.

That's all I need, then! Really, the entirety of your submission says what it needs to, and there's nothing I can see that would present a problem. You've hit all the necessary points - especially that history, thank you so much, really! - so really, we're good to go here, as far as I'm concerned.

All in all, I do love the level of detail you've went to, here, and I look forward to seeing all that you're planning to add to this planet in other submissions. So, with all that said and done, I give this my stamp of pending secondary approval, and hand it off to [member="Valiens Nantaris"]. Thank you so much for your patience!
