Discussion Mandatory Culture Change Demanded

I don't think posts have gotten longer. People are just using divs that narrow the horizontal space text takes so you need to scroll more to get to the point.
This and extra long headers with their div picture, faction logo, and objective picture, plus all their gear, tags, location, written objective and actions, PLUS their signature at the bottom of their posts. If there's a map, a post can take up my entire screen and then some before I even scroll to the post itself and see their writing.
And yeah, I'm aware of the irony as I've got my own holiday sig up which doubles the length of my posting box.

This is definitely a thing. I have been consciously trying to make my divs as uncluttered as possible, while also making them look nice.

However, I am still curious to know what the stats are. If there was any way to check post length. I don't dislike long posts, especially in Private threads. But in larger threads if you are responding to 3-4 people, it can be time consuming. But this has always been my personal issue with those sort of threads. This is the first year I have actively pushed myself to get involved in them more.

There's a word-count at the bottom of the post box.

But otherwise, If I'm doing a longer post I try to break things down by paragraph, what I do in response, my actions towards each person, usually with a tag to them in their paragraph, and then whatever else I need to write about. Dialog highlight to draw attention to IC communication for easy comprehension.
This goes hand-in-hand with tech subs being clear, concise, and easy to understand the generalities of in a minute or less. But that's my preference and another matter altogether.

To my knowledge there is not a way to check the average "length" of posts - Only the amount.

My Rule of thumb.
Generally the quicker you are in the action the better.

Unless you've developed a comfortable writing flow with someone, then it doesn't matter, as you are enjoying writing together anyway and are likely to continue. For people you're going to cross paths with once a year, and have no idea how it's going to go, having that solid action going at the start makes it all easier, regardless if you both gel well as writers.

*This is why in a good majority of my first replies or random threads, one of my characters is in the thick of it right at the start.

I have always boiled down people dropping out of my plots due to my writing. If it's not compelling enough to keep people enthusiastic or engaged, then they just don't want to reply to it and keep it going. It's not always because they are busy with life; more often than not, they've just moved on to different plots. That and there a lot of very tight cliques. I have been on the forum for nearly three years now, and I still feel like the outsider looking in. The struggle to get even a single plot or story arc going (let alone completing!) is super rare. More often than not, it all just stays inside my head. Or I create alts and write with myself for a bit to get the character development in.

I've been working on altering my writing style a bit (working at a library has it's advantages!!), just as a bit of an experiment to see if it helps at all. So far the results are inconclusive, as they are more or less the same.

It was also commented to me not long ago that I am a world buider. That doesn't seem to mean much to me other than being someone that just works well writing by themselves, which is fine. But it's not what I came to an interactive forum to do.

I haven't done much by the way of factions; never been in an invasion or any such thing. But I do try to branch out. And lurk in the LFG section quite a bit, ha ha!

Firstly thank you for having the courage to speak up about this. I think a lot of people (myself included) have similar issues. Sometimes it helps just to know I’m not the only one struggling.

For me joining a faction helped me find a few plots. I’ve also done a lot of open PVE threads because they are easier for people to jump into. I’m not sure if that advice helps at all but I wanted to at least share it.

It is comforting to know that I'm not the only one. But also sad at the same time.

The factions have their own tight cliques within them and it seems as though if you're not within those cliques, then again you are an outsider that writes by themselves in the faction. At least that's my experience.

I also run a lot of public PvE stories, and put up a lot of LFG's or answer them. I have a tiny bit more success with that. I see that you put in a lot of LFG's too. We should team up!
