"A minor, small mining consortium based on Kenari consisting of eleven groups who serve as distinct members within the organisation and who represent the Kenari system within the The High Republic's Senate in Theed."
-- A description of the Kenari Resource Compact.

Since their emergence at the turn of the ninth-century business between them and the Dashiell's have provided funds that have gone onto changing the political and economical landscapes of a dozen star sectors dotted throughout the Outer Rim Territories. If they had it their way then a new business partnership would emerge on Kenari between both sides for what would be (according to Vūm's records) a third time. Indeed, a working business relationship has been coveted with the likes of Makai Dashiell ever since the Obredaan Peel.

Therefore a new opportunity has opened up in the Kenari system.

Penumbral Surveyors (who are one out of eleven groups which make up the overall minor mining consortium colloquially known as the Kenari Resource Compact) finds itself rudderless after an unfortunate accident has left their owner dead and buried to the count. Subjected to the rules of the K.R.C a new owner must be established to takeover the group via the executive decision of Triarch. A standard thirty-two days (according to standard-year measurements approximated to Coruscant) was allocated to find a replacement of Penumbral's predecessor or the board would find someone else to replace them instead. That time has since passed and so measures were set to take place to sustain the profitability and revenue of the K.R.C's operations on Kenari as a new owner was brought into the fold.

An invitation delivered to Makai Dashiell had thereby been sent to discuss Penumbral and it's role within the Kenari Resource Compact. The letter contained mentions and alludes to other business that Makai had conducted in the past with a certain woman who was a recent admission into Triarch, and whose machinations had previously made a lot of credits for both sides

VŪM

~
TO MAKAI DASHIELL,
CEO OF AINA HOLDINGS

Greetings. Our offices have been authorised to extend this invitation (to be delivered to one MAKAI DASHIELL, JOIOL) regarding an opportunity that has arisen in the KENARI SYSTEM.

We are VŪM: a secular non-profit (previously based in LIANNA CITY) who seek to invest, fund or create conversations with clientele, organisations, or actors operation within the economic, political and business markets located throughout the MID RIM and OUTER RIM TERRITORIES. The KENARI RESOURCE COMPACT have therefore authorised our offices to approach you regarding a recent change in the consortium concerning one of it's eleven members.

A recent accident concerning the owner of PENUMBRAL SURVEYORS may be of interest to you. According to the rules and regulations stipulated within the K.R.C a period of thirty-two days (measured by standard-year units approximated to Coruscant) was put into effect after it was discovered that the owner had passed away after sustaining severe, life-threatening injuries during a standard survey. This period passed on STARDATE: 230526 which has left the group rudderless and therefore requires TRIARCH to select new ownership of PENUMBRAL and it's operations.

We have recommended that you, MAKAI DASHIELL, should be recruited as the new lead of PENUMBRAL SURVEYORS after our recommendations were passed onto TRIARCH via previous business dealings that you have conducted through the capacity of your positions within AINA HOLDINGS, DASHIELL INCORPORATED, and ARCENEAU TRADING COMPANY with our previous enterprises. You have come highly recommended with thanks to our previous relations and it is our hopes that a new venture (on KENARI) will reinvigorate our working relationship for years to come.

Our offices hope that your acquisitions of the " LOTHAL MINING OPERATIONS " and "DREY'S CORTOSIS MINE " continue to bear fruit in these taxing times. As our previous business relationship have yielded much success for yourself and our enterprises. It is our hope that you will facilitate this conversation regarding PENUMBRAL SURVEYOR'S and it's operations on KENARI with our representative who was the previous hostess of the " CONVOCATION OF SOJOURN " .

WARM REGARDS,
VŪM

A faceless man, who bore no real consequence to this story, rolls in a trolley that serves as the carrier for a holographic device emblazoned with the insignia of the defunct Santhe Corporation. Wordlessly he picks up the device and places it down onto the table of a long, elongated hallway which overlooks the ruined, tarred and destroyed landscape of Kenari. It takes him no-more than two minutes to set up the holographic transmission, and when it is done, he quietly leaves it behind so that Makai can communicate with the enigma on the other side...

The message itself read like a scam. So much so he would have hit delete if communication on his end had not gone out first. When the owner of Penumbral Surveyor's died, Makai had made a move for the company. A move to own it outright and bring it under the umbrella of Aina Holdings. Keeping the name, naturally, but becoming a branch of his company. Obtaining it was becoming difficult. No amount of credits seemed good enough to sway those left to make decisions.

Something about thirty-two standard days by the Coruscant calendar. Makai wasn't sure if it was a cultural consideration or if they were just fucking with him.

Selecting a new owner - he wondered if they were holed up and if he should be looking to the sky for white smoke.

Yet it wasn't white smoke. It was a communication device. Not entirely unusual. Some of these types were paranoid and preferred not to speak on the regular HoloNet. Makai got it - a reason he often used his deceased father-in-law's DarkNet, why it could be found in all his companies and used for more sensitive information.

Trouble was he wasn't sure who he was talking to. Some committee, it seemed. Kicked back in his temporary office, door locked from intrusions from the kids, it was time to find exactly what was to come next. At this point it would be easier to start his own survey company. The obsession with Kenari reminded him of the High Republic's obsession with Denon.

Makai Dashiell said:
"Are we ready to begin this meeting?"

"Yes, we can," Her said through the transmission as a connection was established between them and Makai. A holographic image, no bigger than a few centimetres, levitated over the base of the device that had been positioned in front of Makai for the Penumbral negotiation. It was in low resolution, filled with static, and the voice on the other end was eerie. Like Makai knew that voice from somewhere else.

"I am a representative for the Kenari Resource Compact," Her explained to Makai as their hologram flickered and blinked. "I have been authorized by the consortium to negotiate, create and sign an agreement for the acquisition of Penumbral Surveyors for Aina Holdings. Shall we outline the terms of this agreement before we begin negotiating a settlement?"

Her fell silent so that she could listen to Makai's reply. If terms could not be reached first then it very well could kill the negotiations before they even started. As a group Penumbral Surveyors belonged to the Kenari Resource Compact. They were not a company or even a subsidiary. In legal terms they could be considered a branch of the K.R.C although, if they were to ever be inspected or audited by the powers that be, then they could learn that Penumbral (and the other ten groups linked to the K.R.C) were not even regarded in this way neither.

The closest term that Her could summarize the groups associated and working on Kenari were contractors. Mercenaries was perhaps more accurate. A loose collection of groups, each with their own expertise as it pertaining to mining operations conducted in the Kenari system, who were overseen and administrated by the K.R.C itself. If Makai wished to add Penumbral Surveyors to his portfolio then he would have to come to speed quickly in learning the differences and arrangements that were already in place.

After all what the consortium were after was a man with the expertise and experience to takeover Penumbral so that it's operations could get back on and underway as it had been before his predecessors untimely accident. Certainly, the K.R.C were not looking for a competitor (like Aina Holdings) to move in and acquire leases, ownership or a change in the arrangements that were already established when Penumbral Surveyors had been their successful application to be taken into the umbrella that is the Kenari Resource Compact...

The familiar voice was echo-y, as if they were broadcasting from a bathroom. Makai hoped he wasn't one of those who had been fit in to some schedule and the voice was busy trying to wheel and deal from a toilet. Perhaps if they had not decided to wait for thirty plus days things could have went a little quicker and a little smoother as not to cut into private time.

"Sure, let's hear your terms and conditions."

"We are transferring our written proposal to your office now," Her explained to Makai. "It is ready for your signature," she added.

On the other side of the transmission Her lifted their gaze upwards to stare out from the cot and into the space that was their prison cell. She was thoughtful about the man that she was negotiating with. It was the third time that her organisation had entered into such negotiations with Makai and their business interests in both the Mid Rim and Outer Rim systems.

Their first negotiation had ended with the acquisition of a Cortosis mine on the planet Obredaan which had been formerly opened by Emeritus Industries over half-a-decade-ago before it had been acquired by Alicia Drey. The deal had brokered the mine to be split into shares which were acquired by a subsidiary of the Arceneau Trading Company and Mecetti Nationalized Industries with Aina Holdings brought in to cover the administration and running of the Cortosis operations as a permanent contractor. Business relations between all parties had been retained for a period of two years until the Dark Empire had nationalized the operation and brought it under Imperial control with the fate of Drey's Cortosis Mine left undiscovered and therefore undetermined in the wake of the Great Core Wars after Carlac had been defeated by the Galactic Alliance.

Their second negotiation had been far more straightforward. A dozen locations dotted across Lothal had been sold to Aina Holdings as Makai brought the mineral called Doonium into his portfolio. Unlike the Dark-Imperials and their attempts to assert control over every resource, organisation and person in the Dark Empire, their cousins on Lianna (and later New Alderaan) had been far more relaxed by comparison. Makai quietly had Her to thank for this. With the Imperial Corrections Directorate under their command (at the time) Her had certain leverage in New Aldera to dissuade Imperial interference in the Doonium mining operations on Lothal which had been sold to Aina Holdings after the economic collapse of the Empire of the Lost.

So long as material continued to be delivered to shipwrights across the Imperial Confederation then the COMECI had had no reason to try and change the arrangement, particularly, when the likes of Karl Von Strauss Karl Von Strauss and Amalia Visconti | Mira Rhory Amalia Visconti | Mira Rhory had been distracted by Project Tion; and now that the Sularen-von Strauss administration folded after their second defeat at Brosi those same operations on Lothal continued to be unimpeded (albeit by Imperials on the planet) although perhaps with a loss of revenue and profit now that the Imperial remnants were no longer in control of the Tion Hegemony or Ash Worlds star sectors.

This third negotiation would not be as easy as the other two, Her summarized. While neither of them could have anticipated the events which had seen to the rise and fall of the Dark Empire (which resulted in the loss of the Cortosis operation for their respective companies) a different form of difficulty would arise as Her attempted to bring Makai back into a working business relationship in the Kenari Resource Compact. She knew the man well enough to know that he would not take Penumbral Surveyors into his ownership if a multi-throng mining consortium retained administration and leverage over the group despite Aina Holding's buying it for the right price.

As Her left Makai to read the business proposal that Vūm had drawn up she anticipated one of two things. Either Makai would immediately move the negotiation towards several changes in the proposal that would completely change the working relationship of Penumbral Surveyors in the consortium (comparatively to the nine of other groups in the K.R.C) or he would lean forward and turn off the transmission thereby ending the negotiation right there and then before it could continue to frustrate, offend or annoy him.

She could only hope that the 43% market share included in the proposal would be enough to retain Makai's interest in acquiring the group and moving it into the ownership of his company. Then, perhaps with some work, Her could convince the young man to enter into a business (on Kenari) that he would normally not entertain. Regardless of whether Aina Holdings became the new owners of Penumbral Surveyors, or another party would be contacted to negotiation it's acquisition, the Kenari Resource Compact would retain the same stipulations that it had placed on the other nine owners and their respective groups in the consortium. Makai would have to abide by those same stipulations as well if he were to be brought into the fold on Kenari.

Would their previous business relationships on Obredaan and Lothal be enough to keep Makai at the table? Her could only wonder for the next few minutes as they elapse, and while Makai considered the proposal, she quietly kept checking on whether or not the Jedi (who were keeping Her a captive somewhere on Naboo) would burst into their cell at any moment. But this was the path that Her choose to walk. There was always the chance of catastrophe or ruination wherever she walked. Sometimes you have to roll the dice and progress towards the Work would not be stopped.

Not even by these four-by-four walls that were keeping Her at bay from the galaxy.

For now.

Looking over the proposal, Makai was quiet. He had reached for his black-rimmed spectacles and placed them upon his face, not wanting to miss a word that was proposed. Eyebrow raised a few times - a bad habit he had, his wife said his expression was often difficult to school in to something neutral.

The moments ticked by, a scroll here and there to re-read a portion of the proposal sent over. Finally, he straightened in his chair and adjusted his frame, finding a more comfortable position to negotiate.

"The terms provided by this....organization...is more than interesting. There is a certain amount of moxie that this council of sorts has. Especially when one considers the lesser importance of Kenari in the galaxy as a whole."

Makai was sure to make it a point that Kenari was not the center of his galaxy. It may be for the other on the end of the line but as a whole? Hardly.

"I would first like to point out this arbitrary year-long trial period. I am not a youngling. I have studied at the feet of Danger Arceneau since the age of five. I am not new money, someone who fell in to credits and decided to just start a corporation."

The half-Galan paused, half-amused and half-annoyed already.

"What is to say the decision to allow me to buy is reversed on the last day? Then I would have invested time and credits in to something I no longer profit from. It seems I am being used to refurbish a survey company rather than expand its use beyond the Kenari sector."

He held up a hand in a wait-a-moment gesture.

"Before you mention it, I do not feel the laws of the High Republic will protect me in this situation. I am not one of their citizens, merely a corporate tax payer. I doubt my plight would register."

It was as Her suspected it would be. Unlike the others who she had entered into business or political relations with, Her found it ever so difficult to make the men of the Dashiell family hers. They were astute men of high grade class and business acumen, which was funny, considering that their vast wealth and fortune started-up from scrapping in the Outer Rim systems. Her could see why Danger Arceneau Danger Arceneau had closely aligned herself to the Dashiell's every time that she begun her own business relationships.

Whether it had been during the Obredaan Peel, where the Cortosis mines of the now defunct Emeritus Industries fell into Aina Holding's portfolio; the buy-out of the Lothal-Doonium mining operations that were previously owned by Drey Incorporated; or now, during this negotiation with the Kenari Resource Compact, a man like Makai wasn't an easy push-over unlike the other men that Her had brought into the fold.

It was something that Her suspected others had found out the hard way in the past.

She shouldn't ever underestimate this man.

It was a fair and astute point.

Indeed, Makai was right on the money as he seemed to usually be. Although Her would never make the admission during this negotiation, as she was in no-doubt that the man on the other end of the transmission would turn it off immediately afterwards, the K.R.C certainly had done what Makai was pointing too in the past with others who had either been invited to join the consortium, or given the inclination that membership could be acquired for quick money. There were so many other minor, lesser people out there who had thought to themselves that they were going to make bang-buck for their money and were soon served a cold douse of reality when the time came to short-change them. All perfectly legal as well, albeit monstrously immoral, as per the written contracts signed and sealed by Makai's predecessors.

But unlike those who had been short-changed by the K.R.C in the past things would be different for Makai. It was now down to Her to convince him otherwise.

Makai Dashiell said:

"Not even if I were to produce a written and signed guarantor on the Senate?" Her inquired while she stalled for time and thought about a way to truly convince Makai to do business with the K.R.C.

Makai tried to keep his face neutral and not raise an eyebrow. His expressions gave away far too much his wife claimed. Not exactly his fault he seemed to be consistently faced with sentients who tried his sanity. Today was clearly no different, another day ending in y in regards to outlandish claims.

"Unfortunately no. The High Republic Senate has a...host of issues that gives me great pause in placing trust in such an institution. Especially for something important as a business transaction."

The Senate was spineless and easily bought. The Chancellor no different. From what he could tell and what he had heard first hand, she kept a tight circle and if one's issue was beyond that circle, best of luck. The half-Galan felt Chancellor Vexx could easily be bribed but such was a waste of credits. A waste where he could use those credits to start his own survey company.

There was a thought to agree and invest no credits at all. Yet time would still need to be invested and his efforts could better be directed elsewhere. The fact that everything but a lawyer had been mentioned was giving him all the information he needed.

"It may be for the best. I feel I have too many independent thoughts for this board. Understandable, they have their own agenda to uphold."
