OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
An exotic form of personal shielding, the Urchin is the result of a Helix initiative to better protect its high-ranking personnel.
Taking the form of a bizarre, many-spined box some five centimeters across, the system is often built into a droid or armor set directly. Unlike deflector shielding, the Urchin gives off no hint of its function under most circumstances. An equipped target is surrounded by no glowing bubble or visible energy barricade. Instead, it simply monitors the bearer's immediate surroundings in a complete, spherical range around them.
It is only when under fire that the Urchin system springs to life. Arcs of sizzling purple/black energy seem to spring from the bearer's surface, vaporizing incoming projectiles or dissipating energy blasts. Even projectiles that are too fast for a user to perceive are turned to harmless puffs of steam.
Thus equipped, the bearer can weather open battle with confidence, secure in the knowledge that few forms of attack can harm them. Melee attackers would do well to avoid the bearer too, as the system responds to fast-moving objects up close with equal aggression, potentially knocking away or damaging the attacker's weapon.
The Urchin's protection against any number of individual, uncoordinated attacks is without parallel. Rockets, laser cannon blasts, even light artillery, all will usually fail to breach the system. However, it can struggle greatly against more conventional forms of attack. Weapons which project many shots sequentially/simultaneously (such as shotguns or some repeating blasters) can quickly overstress the system, as it must track and destroy each projectile individually. Flamethrowers or similar "spray" weapons are also effective against the Urchin, as it will not even attempt to divert these.
