OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Age: 54 (at time of death)
  • Force Sensitivity: Untrained Force Sensitive
  • Species: Alderaanian Human
  • Appearance: Jen Rand was a Human female. She was fifty-four years old when she died of a heart attack. She was fair-skinned, buxom, slender and of average height. Her long wavy hair was dark brown (she dyed her graying roots) and parted on her left. She had an oval-shaped face with strong cheekbones and full lips, and a small gap between her two front teeth, a flaw which many found endearing. Most striking were her azure blue eyes, often accentuated with black eyeliner or dark eyeshadow. She tended to wear tank tops and jeans, sometimes fancier clothing or jewelry.
SOCIAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Jen Rand
  • Loyalties: Starlin Rand
  • Wealth: Lower class by Coruscanti standards. She was a common laborer, an assistant mechanic to her husband, and generally pretty frugal, preferring to give money to charity rather than spend it on herself.
  • Notable Possessions: Nothing too specific. Any gear or technology at her disposal was most likely older, not cutting edge, with some parts potentially scavenged from junkyards.
  • Skills: While she didn't speak of it openly, Jen used to be a mercenary and was employed by various crime lords. She carried many of her old skills from those days, including combat experience with blasters, grenades, and vibroblades, but was out of practice by the time she died. She was also a pretty good mechanic and knew how to use a computer spike.
  • Personality: Jen had no illusions about her lot in life. She knew she was washed up, her glory days behind her, and things were only going to go downhill from there. That said, the latter half of her life wasn't all bad. She was married to a decent guy who cared about her, and her son was on a far better path than she was at his age. For many years she struggled with drug addiction and suffered through a string of abusive, abortive relationships before she met her current husband. She didn't like to talk about the past and felt guilty for things she did when she was younger. Many of her actions, from giving what little extra money she has to charity, to taking in children orphaned during the invasion of Coruscant, were motivated by a need to atone for past sins.
COMBAT INFORMATION
  • Weapon of Choice: A battered old blaster
  • Combat Function: She could probably handle herself against common thugs and even more high level criminal types, but not against trained Force Users.
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
"In the olden days, they had called her “child woman” for her youthful beauty and innocent-looking blue eyes—one last sweet deception before her targets met their grisly ends. [...] The birth of her son had been her wakeup call, and while she had cut her way out of that business for his sake, it meant all she had left was the guilt and the shame and the gnawing hunger for an escape." - "The Bright Knight and the Man in White"

"It's a long story, and he was just a kid at the time, but I recognized his eyes. I... used to work for some pretty awful people. He was supposed to have been sold into slavery, only the slaver ship carrying him never arrived at its destination. So they sent a group of us out to investigate..." - Jen Rand, "God of the Dance"

"...if Starlin Rand and his wonderful mother Jen hadn't been able to convince him [to leave the Sith], what hope did some random Jedi have?" - Arcturus Thesh, "From the Glare of Stars"

Born on Alderaan into a middle class family, Jen was a wild child. She left home at the first opportunity, got mixed up with a bad crowd, and eventually found herself on the payroll of a crime lord by the name of Tosh Rylance. Rylance liked to train orphans to be assassins; any kids that couldn't shape up under his grueling tutelage were sold into slavery and never heard from again. Jen's participation in this particularly heinous crime haunts her to this day—she remembers all the names and faces of the children she doomed to bondage, and was even able to recognize one of the victims in a chance encounter more than a decade later.

At some point, Jen encountered a Balosar smuggler named Zabka Bis'clavret who had been captured by Rylance. Zabka seduced her in hopes of escaping, but things turned out a little more complicated than that. The two married and had a son, Starlin. The birth of her child prompted Jen to abandon her contract with Rylance, and she effectively disappeared with her husband and son.

For nine years the family lived on a starship, making a living as smugglers and constantly on the move. Jen was not happy with the environment her son was growing up in, but she saw little other choice. Moreover, it became clear that the emotionally distant Zabka was harboring dark secrets about his past.

The sudden disappearance of Zabka following an incident involving a "burglar" he killed put an end to their spacer lifestyle. While she had wanted to settle down for some time, now Jen was left with no choice but to move to Coruscant. The next three years are a blur in her mind. Struggling to make end's meet, getting really hooked on drugs (she had dabbled in them before, of course, but never like this), and bringing home strange (and occasionally downright nasty) men that would stay for anywhere from a few days to months then leave without so much as a goodbye. Somehow she got a job working as a mechanic; somehow she met a Zabrak named Silo-Hur who was willing to give her a chance; somehow she kicked the habit and hauled herself up by her bootstraps. The one thing she couldn't seem to get back, though, was also the one thing she couldn't stand to lose - her son.

While Jen was struggling with addiction, Starlin had endured her neglect and the abuse of her boyfriends. To cope, he joined a violent street gang, stealing for them in return for protection. Even as Jen was finally getting her life together, he began a downward spiral, echoing many of her own mistakes. She tried to set a good example, but it seemed like the damage had already been done.

Then, a couple months before his fourteenth birthday, Starlin suddenly disappeared. It was the culmination of a series of strange events beginning with the arrival of a package in the mail addressed to him. The package was from Jen's recently deceased great-great uncle Irrylath, a notoriously eccentric old hermit, and it contained a fragment of a lightsaber crystal. Jen was used to being ignored by her family on Alderaan, who had all but disowned her, yet Irrylath had left the crystal to Starlin in his will, even though he'd never even met the boy. Within a week or two, some shifty looking characters showed up and started asking about the crystal. They apparently threatened Jen's life in an attempt to force Starlin to give it up. Instead, he fled the planet on his own, heading to Jerrilek to meet with a famous archaeologist and figure out what was so special about the crystal.

When Starlin came back, Jen was furious with him, but she was also glad that he was alive and well. The boy was accompanied by the archaeologist Errik Nimdok, who readily vouched for Starlin's crazy story about being chased by the Sith. To Jen's surprise, Nimdok appeared to have taken Starlin under his wing, becoming a mentor figure to the teen. Nimdok took the crystal with him when he left, much to her relief.

But it was only a matter of time before Starlin left again, this time on an assignment from Nimdok. Jen bid farewell to her son as he left for Zeffo, unaware that her boy would return a fully-fledged Jedi Padawan.

Jen observed from afar as her boy grew up within the discipline of the Jedi, separated by distance, but she freely offered her support whenever Starlin needed it. She was there to comfort him after he lost his hand in battle, fighting on the wrong side of a war; she saw him come home to her with a fugitive Sith acolyte in tow, hoping in vain that spending some time with a real family would change a heart of darkness. She lived to see the return of Zabka, who re-entered their lives looking to protect his family from old enemies, but ultimately passed away from a heart attack at the age of fifty-four, a consequence of her many years of substance abuse damaging her organs.
