Strengths:
  • Raining Fire: The GFL Indirect Fire Squad, armed with the IM-01, is able to rain mortar shells down onto the enemy with a high degree of accuracy
  • Well Trained: Many members of the Legion are many military veterans and those that aren't are well trained during their initial training and are then further trained by the more veteran members of their squads
Weaknesses:
  • Rather Small: While well trained and well equipped the GFL Rifle Squad is still a rather small unit and if alone could be easily overwhelmed by a unit of larger proportions
  • Reloading: The GFL primarily uses slugthrowers and while there are some upsides to this the downside is they require reloading more frequently, something an enemy could exploit
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
With the development of the Anti-Armor Squad there was only one type of unit that the GFL needed to finish fleshing out their squad sized units and that was a squad designated to provide indirect fire. To do this they decided to use the IM-01 and equip the squad with it as to provide the indirect fire needed. In order to choose the right Legionnaires for the job the once again looked into their psychological profiles and picked out people who had analytical and calculating qualities that would help them in operating the mortars.

With the right Legionnaires chosen the basic structure of the squad needed to be figured out. To do this Noah kept the same size of the Rifle Squad, twenty Legionnaires but drastically changed up the structure of the squad in order to better fit its mission. While the squad still has a squad leader and a comms operator/assistant squad leader, this is where the similarities end. There are no separate fireteams in the Indirect Fire Squad and are instead grouped together in order in a single unit, making them easier to command at once.

This single unit consisted of six mortar gunners who's job it was to input data into the targeting computer in order to be as accurate as possibly, they also carry the tripod when the mortar is broken down; six assistant mortar gunners who's job it is to load and fire the mortar and carry the tube when the mortar is broken down; lastly is the six mortar ammo carriers whose job, as the name suggests, is to carry the mortars shells as well as the mortars baseplate when it is broken down.
