As Reina shuffled off toward the grill where Tigris stood tending to skewers and sun-glazed vegetables, Eve watched her go with a gentle smile curving at her lips. There was something about the way Reina moved — awkward but trying — that tugged at her chest. Eve genuinely wondered how the two would get on on their own, but she knew them both well enough to know there would most likely be a degree of friendship between them, a small spark to draw them together even if just a little bit.
Eve's thoughts had barely finished forming when she caught sight of two familiar figures cresting the curve of the dunes. Her heart leapt.
Without thinking, she sprinted, bare feet kicking up bursts of warm sand, her silver hair catching the breeze in ribbons. Isari bounded closely behind, silent and otherwise as stoic as ever.
"Azzie!" she called, voice bright and utterly joyful. In a flash, Eve wrapped her arms around the raven-haired Zabrak in a tight, sun-warmed hug.
"You came," she murmured against her friend’s shoulder, emotion thick in her chest.
"I know you're not the biggest fan of the ocean. Thank you."
Then she turned slightly, extending that same warmth to the towering presence just behind her.
"Aadihr," She flung her arms around him, too—less of a leap, more of a heartful press, cheek brushing his shoulder.
"I’m so glad you’re here." She had become aware that Azzie and Aadihr had become considerably closer recently. It was something that warmed her heart immensely, to know that the two had found happiness with one another. She knew they both deserved it, and the thought of it happening made her tender heart flutter.
"Aris," she said with a small smirk, turning to the young Noble next.
"You're getting one too, y'know. I don't make the rules." Another wrap around of her arms and a heartfelt squeeze of her towering friend.
"Thank you for coming."
When she finally stepped back, catching her breath, her eye drifted down the beach... and stilled.
There, scattered like precious gems across the sunlit shore, were people she loved.
Reina, the birthday girl, awkward and sweet as ever, doing her best to get out of her shell.
Tigris, the love of her life, dutifully grilling like it was her life purpose, just because she asked her.
Colette, brooding and watchful within her meditative space.
Masters Valery and Kahlil, enjoying a quiet moment whilst Vera and the triplets went off on adventures.
Master Jonyna, already savouring the waves.
Shan, drifting with quiet grace.
And beside her, Azzie, Aris and Aadihr, three of the strongest people she knew.
Eve didn’t speak right away. She just stood there, her hand slowly pressing to her sternum, right over her heart. The sea breeze ruffled her hair. And for a moment, she simply breathed.
So many people she adored, gathered in the sunlight. Laughing. Living.
For once, no battles. No bloodshed. Just warmth.
She blinked quickly, brushing the corner of her eye with the back of her knuckle.
"Okay," she whispered to herself, voice trembling only slightly.
"Okay."
Then she turned to her friends with a grin.
"Come on. There’s grilled stuff, fizzy tea, and a beach chair with your names on it. And I’m pretty sure someone’s already setting up limbo."
She reached for Azzie’s hand before she could protest, giving it a gentle tug.
