FREYA SOLVEIG

Pauline-Nordin.jpg

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

  • Intent: Update an old submission to new standards. Make her even more of a badass.
  • Image Credit: Here. Pauline Nordin. One must imagine her with blonde hair.
  • Role: Freya is an exceptionally strong, tough and seasoned NCO who excels at tactical close combat. She’s no strategist or great military thinker, but she knows how to motivate her troops, drill them, and then lead them from the front into combat.
  • Permission: N/A
  • Links: Old submission. Commands Reaper Squad. Some description passages from Reaper Squad are carried over with permission of the author.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION

  • Age: 37
  • Force Sensitivity: Non-Force User
  • Species: Human.
  • Appearance: Freya is an incredibly well built, strong human female in her late 30s. She has long blonde hair combined with piercing blue eyes. There’s a reason why she is used on so many recruiting and ‘information’ posters, and that is because she looks the very embodiment of female strength.
Long years of combat has seen her marked by scars from a variety of sources. He has a bad series of scars on her back from penetrating shrapnel which pieced her armour. Her right arm required skin grafts after it was burned during the battles on Gehenna.

Freya’s uniform is always crisp, clean and perfect in a drill and camp setting. In the field her armour and weapons are always perfectly maintained. Out of uniform however she wears almost shabby civilian clothes, hair messily pulled back, showing her body off a bit.

Freya does not wear jewellery except on very special occasions. She does however have several tattoos on her body. On her back, actually incorporating her scars is a Phoenix. On her upper arms are symbols of dragons.

SOCIAL INFORMATION

  • Name: Command Sergeant Major Freya Solveig
  • Loyalties: Firemane Industries and Technology
  • Wealth: In addition to her good salary, Freya received substantial bonuses based on her service, incentives and donatives from the Directors. Though not vastly wealthy she spends little on non-essentials such as clothes or jewellery so she has a considerable amount put aside for retirement.
  • Notable Possessions:
    • Medals for her service: Stellar Cross First Class, Galactic Cross First Class.
    • Mk 1 Bolter, SN00004, the oldest still in operation, though by this stage it has had so many components replaced it is hardly the original weapon.
    • Gold ring with symbol of the Order of the Torch, a group dedicated to education through unconventional means.
    • Bolt Pistol
    • Ironside Armour
    • Reaper Plasma Shotgun marked with notable kills.
  • Skills:
    • Peak human strength and resilience.
    • Exceptionally good with ranged, melee and explosive weapons, as well as unarmed combat.
    • Exceptional at drilling and training units.
    • Very good at small scale unit leadership.
    • Capable gunner and vehicle driver.
    • Trained as a transport/dropship pilot.
  • Personality: Freya Solveig is the very definition of military discipline. She has now almost 15 years’ experience as an NCO and that has made her something of a stereotype of a soldier. She is strict, exacting and above all dedicated to discipline in all things.
In person Freya is quite cold and dour to strangers. Often they find her sternness to be almost inhuman. This is in some part a façade as once she comes to like or trust someone she will open up a little more. She had a penchant for dry, almost dark humour, and a sarcastic way with words which has gotten her in trouble with officers many times. Despite it occasionally seeming like she hates everyone equally, Freya can deal respectfully with people. In her personal life though she is not the sort to seek out attachments with others, instead favouring one-night stands or transactional agreements with those who takes her fancy.

Freya has consistently refused promotion for almost a decade to become an officer. Why she has done this could be either a preference for getting into combat with her troops or a lack of desire for increased responsibility and paperwork. Whatever the reason, Freya could probably have been a senior field officer now, but has resolutely refused to do so. Perhaps she just likes bawling at new recruits.

Freya’s martial standards make her both admirable and terrifying to enlisted and junior officers alike. She has no sympathy in her for those who cannot help themselves, and the Force help someone if they fail to do their duty or not live up to her demands. However, on the brighter side she is resolute in her loyalties and will not any of her people be left behind.

It cannot be doubted that Freya has a dark side. She has no mercy or compassion for anyone who stands in her way. An enemy will find her a relentless foe willing to do anything to achieve her goals. She is perfectly fine violating moral codes and using torture or blackmail to get what she needs done. Having said that, she will follow orders, and whilst she’s perfectly prepared to use whatever methods are needed she is not sadistic in doing it for no reason.

Personally Freya is incredibly brave, and whilst ‘fearless’ is not literally true, she will hold her ground and not give in. Naturally, she is more than a little stubborn in all aspects of life which can mean that she will not concede no matter whether she is wrong.

Regarding Force users, Freya feels no awe or reverence for them. To her they are merely people lucky enough to have the right genetics to feel the Force, not special chosen beings to be venerated. In her long career she has picked up skills for dealing with Force users and has killed many herself in combat. She is especially scornful of any apprentice who tries to use their Force skills as a reason to try and tell her what to do; it usually does not end well for them!

Similarly, Freya is not a bigot based on race, species, orientation or political beliefs. So long as someone can stand on their own feet and isn’t a fool she’s more than happy to work with them. This is best seen in her unlikely friendship with Mezha Krazhmir, a Vong from Tephrike.

COMBAT INFORMATION

Though she is capable of using sniper weapons, she prefers to get into combat, using her armour, reflexes and instinct to keep her safe. The boltgun and bolt pistol are weapons she uses a lot, but she is also a fan of the Reaper shotgun for close in firefights as well as a Sarix for melee combat.

Freya is capable of piloting ground vehicles and being a gunner on them or in a space ship, though these are not her expertise. Typically she commands Reaper Squad, an elite heavy infantry unit.

Strengths:

  • Ironhide. Freya is strong, tough and determined. She is in peak condition for a human, and is deadly in close combat armed or unarmed.
  • Sergeant. As a very experienced NCO Freya is an expert at small unit actions. She can lead troops into action expertly.
  • Resilient. Freya is resistant to mental attacks and attempts to trick her with the Force.
Weaknesses:

  • Human. For all her grit and toughness, Freya is only human. She has no Force powers, genetic engineering or other supernatural skills.
  • Commander. Freya is a good Sergeant, but lacks skills at large scale direction of operations. She does not see the ‘big picture’, and so is not great at strategy as opposed to tactics.
  • Master. Freya’s resistance to the Force is by willpower alone, so a powerful Master skilled in mentalism could overcome her mental barriers.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Freya Solveig always keeps her history and origins quiet. However, her two employers know her story well enough. Freya was born towards the end of the dark age on Denon, a crumbly city-world beset with hardships. Her parents were fairly lowly in origin, barely making subsistence from day labour and scavenging.

Freya grew up hard and tough because she had to. She lost her mother at an early age when she didn’t come back after a salvage trip with her father. She later found that her mother had been bitten by a zombie and had been mercy-killed by her husband to prevent her turning. It was a savage, brutal life, but Freya grew to adapt to it quickly. By the time she reached aged ten she was a good shot with a rifle, good at creeping and memorising locations in the twisting ruins and had made her first kill.

Shortly after her sixteenth birthday though things took a turn for the worse when her father was lost whilst exploring some ruins. A survivor of the expedition told her that he had died in a collapsing building. Freya, cynical even at this age, went alone, sneaking through the wastes, and found her father’s body, shot in the back and stripped of valuables. Burying him, and the last of her compassion for others, she returned to the rough camp and cunningly investigated the survivor. Eventually, she found what she was looking for; a trinket of her father’s in their possessions. Not knowing, or even really caring at this point if he was the murderer, she contrived an excuse to get him alone, drugged and then tortured a confession from him, making him sign that he had killed Freya’s father. This done, she killed him and pinned the confession to his chest before vanishing.

Alone and isolated, Freya made her way across Denon with just her weapons, wits and cunning. It was at this time though that the outside galaxy came to Denon. Omega Pyre, containing both Siobhan Kerrigan and Tegaea Alcori, landed on the planet and helped restore order as well as purging many of the monstrous zombies which lived there. Freya volunteered to guide the liberating forces through areas she knew well, acting as a reliable and tough guide for the Pyre. When the planet was liberated she, like many others, volunteered to join. Anything was better than staying on Denon, and getting a regular salary and meals was worth it. Her actions had indeed been noticed, and then Colonel Tegaea Alcori met with her and found she was an excellent candidate for a special squad her partner Siobhan had.

Freya fought at Bespin, Eriadu and Roche with the Pyre as it became the Protectorate. She was noted for her bravery and discipline in action, and was made corporal after the Battle of Bespin. Indeed, the military life suited Freya, and though she was somewhat introverted and unwilling to talk off duty, she was an excellent soldier.

In this capacity Freya fought during the Reaver War, and served with conspicuous valour during the final battle on Gehenna. During this battle she was wounded, but in typical fashion she shrugged it off and continued fighting until blood loss and the final victory compelled her to seek aid. For her actions she was awarded the Stellar Cross and promoted to Sergeant at age 22.

When Tegaea was almost assassinated by a Sith agent and forced to leave the Protectorate, Freya was invited to join them at Firemane during its inception. Freya accepted, but resolutely refused promotion to be an officer. However, she did act as a close advisor to Tegaea and Siobhan during these early days, and even worked as a bodyguard for them for a while.

Freya served loyally, bravely and brutally at times during Firemane’s next campaigns. Whoever the enemy was, be it Eldorai rebels, One Sith, slavers or Xioquo she was there. For a while, Freya was in command at Firemane HQ because so many of her superiors had vanished during the Netherworld Event. Faced with Eldorai insurgents, Bando Gora zealots and traitors, she carried out an extremely ruthless crackdown to keep order. Lady Kerrigan later legitimised her actions.

Tegaea had a habit, almost a ritual, of asking Freya every year if she would like to be promoted. However Freya would always refuse, save for ensuring she was the highest possible rank of NCO in the entire company. She therefore has a unique rank of Command Sergeant Major and is responsible for advising on training and discipline for all company forces. The fact that a greenhorn junior officer can give her orders does not seem to faze her…in theory. In practice though if any officer is foolish enough to ignore her ‘advice’ they soon find out the true power of the NCO’s displeasure.

The rank settled, Freya fought at Serenade, a settlement overrun by a hivemind zombie infestation. There she performed well and even killed a giant infected beast in combat. Later she fought on Tephrike when the so called ‘Dominion of Light’ betrayed Firemane, capturing Elpsis Kerrigan-Alcori and killing many Firemane troops. During the terrible battle at Fortress Purity Freya and Reaper Squad were joined by the Republican Guard’s troops and were able to gain a victory, though at great cost.

Freya continues to lead Reaper Squad as the ultimate shock weapon of Firemane, though she is also starting to look towards a future where she doesn’t have as much brutal combat as well.
