i'm not the biggest scanline hater but man they just suck, people popularized them here because of the Star Wars aesthetic and holograms, but the history of scanlines literally dictates from the retro golden days, programmers would institute scanlines to obscure images so that your brain would fill in the rest of the image.

But with so little space to work with on flairs, I feel every pixel counts, and you just don't have the room to necessitate scanlines. The scanline illusion just doesn't work at this small a scale. So, the aesthetic is all you're going for, and its not that good of a aesthetic when compared side by side with non-scanlines.

To each their own, who am I to stop the culture. But, I am the guy who accepts Chaos flairs, and I can tell you your chances of acceptance get halved when scanlines get introduced on flair. There are some I like and I've even made a few myself, but I treat them as rare exceptions, not the status norm.

FYI I'm getting some weird effects in the new one on the letters e and s, on both Photoshop 2025 and Photopea. E.g.:

I hate that photoshop is a propietary ass but was our only main option 10 years ago.

I’ll upload the OG PSD later its whatever, I’m not really willing to spend an immense amount of time dummy proofing a flair psd across multiple image editors, half of whom are backwards engineering Photoshop’s sources and methods which can create unreliable results.

If people have an eye for it, they have an eye for it. At this point it’d be easier to just code an image editors myself specifically for flairs lmao. I mean the rule of thumb is pretty simple, the output just needs to look like 90% of the rest of the flairs. Generating too large or small a font, that has too many grey pixelations because of how tiny the white is, that will get you denied.

So pay careful attention to that. I almost always deny based on font alone. Maybe sometimes bad design, maybe sometimes too much or too thick scanlines, or maybe im just scanline hating that day and want the og sauce, but the overwhelming majority is the font looks like poopoo and the artist obviously didnt care.

Like, for example, there are illusions at play to be aware of too. BS subbed a minor distortion in their font, and I might not have it catched it, but the design is a black circle illuminated with bright colors on the outside with the white on the black.

This makes the white of the font extremely noticeable and any discoloration in the white even moreso. It also makes the white less “pop” because the focus is outside the dark, and also inside the dark simultaneously. Whereas if there was no glow, the focus would be solely on the white, which would apply more forgiveness to discoloration and brightness because there’s nothing else in the flair to compare it to.

Design theory crafting a cool image is a difficult thing to replicate consistently, even if your own base image isnt fighting against u
