Feedback on Connor Harrison

Hi all.

You know the score.

Connor has been active for coming up to 3 years this April 1st. He's gone from Jedi Padawan to Master of the Silver Jedi and then right down to the Dark Side and Disciple of Ren for the First Order.

I'd like to know what you think of him and how I write him; what works and what doesn't.

What can be improved, re-thought, done more or done less.

I won't bang on about confidence issues or what not - feedback is important to see what the community think as it's you who I hope to entertain when writing him and with his new journey just beginning, I hope to get it right from the start and see where I can change / improve / develop.

Positive and negative all welcome.

Many thanks.

:)

Hey, bud. ^_^

I've always really enjoyed Connor, both as a character and your writing. From the very first post he's struggled to define himself as a Jedi, and for a good while he did very well at doing so only for it to finally come crashing down. While both me and the character of Thurion are saddened by his fall to the dark side, I realise it was bound to happen eventually and I fully support your decision. :)

One thing I did notice over our long history together is the many times you've flip-flopped between light and dark. In the span of what felt like a year he went from Rogue Jedi, to Dark Jedi, then back to full-on Jedi, and now Sith. But it's a minor nitpick of mine. :p

His story interests me, which is what matters most in my opinion.

I'd stop there, but after all the fun times we've had I feel I should give you more to work with ;)

Well, I generally find you/Connor to be good fun to write with, and I like that it's easy to pick up on what kind of person he is. He has always has an ongoing story arc, and thus I always have an excuse to buy popcorn :p You have clear goals for him, and you write the struggle to achieve those goals well and thoroughly. The fact that he's never overpowered or without his notable weaknesses also makes me happy.

I don't know whether it's deliberate or not, but I often don't find Darksided Connor to be particularly...likable. From what I've seen of him, he can be kind of controlling and easily offended. Not saying it as a bad thing, it makes him more of a villain, but since from what I gather he's currently all about making new alliances and growing in power, I thought I'd make a note of it.

But overall, he's a really enjoyable character with the potential to make a deadly villain. Thumbs up from me.

[member="Thurion Heavenshield"] Thank you. And yes, that's been a fault of my own, not knowing if I had the courage to move away from all I had with the Jedi. Now I have, I'm going to make sure he doesn't flit again, because I want his decisions to be final. Thank you for the feedback my friend :)

[member="Lynn Nantaris"] Yes. That is nothing but my own fault and not keeping on top of big threads. I will change! Thank you! :)

[member="Aria Vale"] Thank you my dear. Well...that has hit a chord with me. Thank you for bringing it up. I struggled to make the transition from p**ed off Jedi to accepting Sith/Dark Sider. To be honest, I don't want him to be that controlling and I know he takes offence easily, but I'm trying hard to make that not the case now. With his new goals and establishing, I want him to feel confident in himself and what he can do so he's NOT controlling or offended, as I know that could put people off, and I don't want that at all. I will strive to make him likable enough as all good villains should be really! Thanks Aria. :)

I don't think I can give any actual criticism as I've only written with you across a couple threads since my arrival on the site.

But nonetheless I've enjoyed writing with you and interacting with the character.

I'm not sure how critical you would want me to be, but I think you as a writer have some very strong points, but the character itself frequently confuses me.

On the good, you’re obviously a very strong writer, and you have some great ways of expressing and showing your stories. You’re also very active both IC and OOC which is a good thing.

For critiques, I’ll be brief and I can expand on these more if you wish:
  • I find Connor’s flip-flopping between alignments and allegiances rather odd. The character sometimes lacks any logical reasons for doing things.
  • The character just seems…melodramatic and unlikeable at times. In fact, it’s a pretty good similarity between the character and the playby’s usual roles.
  • I don’t understand the character’s motivations, tying into the above.

You’ve done a lot of work on the character and I’ve not read anywhere all the threads, but this is the impression I get from what I’ve seen.

[member="Jacob Crawford"] Thank you! :)

[member="Valiens Nantaris"] Thank you for this. For your points, I'll address them:

1) I have worried about this in the past, as Thurion noted so I know it's there, but hopefully feel now I've got him where he should be, I can nail him down to a clear alleigance.

2) I'll happily hear more on this. I don't want him to be unlikeable because of his personality. Unlikeable as a villain, that's what I'll aim for but if I'm writing him in an unlikebale way, I need to remedy that as I don't want that for him. And I've tried not to inject BC's film roles in Connor (bar Khan in the old days), as I don't want to carbon copy at all. Can you expand?

3) I'll try to tie this with 1 as he's been without motivation for a while as he's isolated himself as a Jedi with a chip on his shoulder. But now he is settled and has a drive, I'm hoping his aims, goals and motivation will become clear.

Thanks for the feedback, it is appreciated, and your kind words. :)
