Podrace Drive Like You Stole It! [Darkwire]

Hands on the ladder, she made her way up to the roof. It wasn't that hard, not with the Force guiding her movements. She hated that the Force was doing that, caused her nothing but headaches but still, she was moving. Looking around she couldn't find a CorpSec officer yet, but she was atop a building. Moving quickly, she ran to make a leap to the next building, hitting the floor and rolling. A bit of gravel on top of the roof and she shook her had. She was not going to need to keep up this pace if she could get away.

From her view on top of the building, she was seeing someone that may have been a Darkwire operative. Then she got a second look from her vantage, it was Daiya. That was not a bad thing. But… something was going on. And through a bit of enhanced senses, and a trained mind of a spy, she heard a few things.

Crazy… chick…

She could work with that.

Jumping from the roof down to the escape and from the escape down to the street. She took a dive onto a CorpSec as she pulled out her side arm. A quick breath to center herself, and she fired towards, but not at the cab, just to send a blaster bolt to the street. She could make the shot, but… well, if she could make Daiya Daiya 's story more believable?

Right… CorpSec on the ground near her… Time to run. Next building, three down, escape in the alley.

ROUND 2
Vehicle: Speeder Taxi
Previous Roll: 5 | "This should lose them!"
This Roll: -1 modifier from CorpSec

Daiya laughed over the blue girl's antics, giddily applying the requested lipstick. She froze, nearly smudging Hex's lips into something disfigured, as a CorpSec gunship pulled up alongside them. Lights blazing, speakers blaring, the young shadowrunner's attention was drawn to the taxi driver when she noticed their surrounding slowing. The Gran driver was taking advantage of her distraction to oblige with CorpSec's commands, slowly drifting the taxi over toward the nearest building roof.

"Hey, who said you could—feth!" The teen ducked, covering her head as bits of debris and glasteel rained down on the open-air speeder. She looked up in shock at the evaporating fireball where the gunship had hung in the air, her wide eyes tracing the shot back to the neurotic laughter of a glowing Hex on her hoverboard, whose rocket launcher was still smoldering on her shoulder. "A little warning next time?!"

She clutched her heart, breathing heavily for a few moments to catch up to its frantic pace. Daiya watched as the falling debris trailed behind them, and the sound of sirens died from the air. She was free of CorpSec, though her problems persisted.

"This fare's not over yet," she prodded the driver, who looked back at her with three wide eyes. "Keep driving." His fear was painted right on top of them, shouting loud even without speaking. Nudging him with her blaster at least got him to turn back into the traffic again, taking the speeder back on course toward escape, but the teen could feel his glare reflected back at her from the many buildings around them. "What, you think I'm the crazy one? Exhibit A!"

Gesturing to the blue girl, Daiya cracked a cautious grin at her. "No offense, that was crazy astral. Let's just hope that doesn't bring more CorpSec down on us..." She broadened her grin, and tossed the lipstick over to Hex. Maybe the blue girl would find something more productive to do with her hands that way. "Catch! I owe you for that save, that's for starters."

Turning back ahead, the young shadowrunner gritted her teeth, wanting that to be the end of her excitement today. She clutched the satchel against her beating chest, adjusting her sweaty grip around the blaster. "I just wanna get home, choom, you get me?"

The Gran just flinched, and a second later, so did she. Daiya ducked, looking wildly at Hex, who had no blaster in her hand this time. Craning her neck out the speeder, she climbed onto her knees to look out the back. The teen nearly locked eyes with the blonde-haired freedom fighter, and shook her head at the sight, "Crazy chick..."

Daiya turned around to lean against her seat, throwing her head against the back cushion. With her free hand, she rubbed at her forehead, letting the motion massage the worries from her mind. She muttered in a low voice to herself, "I am surrounded by crazy people today."

Zooming somewhere past Cartri Keswoll Cartri Keswoll 's gourmet getaway vehicle, four hoverbikes shot, two of them about to have a tug of war over gravity or rights to free seating. The air of wet noodle was on the wind, overdressed patrons recovering their traumatized holopets.

Slowed, his three chasing Corpos were right beside him, one reached to grab him off the side of the bike and….

…Batch slammed on his brakes, the Corpo caught the side of his speeder, and was lifted off his own. Lacking a pilot, it turned into a fireball somewhere nearby, the man now hanging on for dear life. "That's what you get." The other two speeders shot right by him, he didn't lose them but he did make a right-angle turn, using the side of the building as a way to drift into it.

"How's the view." Batch said to the man now hanging on to his speeder, which was again sideways, running across the side of a building. The returned expression could not be quantified. Down they came with a soft bump of gravitational cushioning.

Saija Kwann Saija Kwann joined their chase as it began to weave through traffic. A chase of a chase! They probably didn't even see her coming! The garbage truck slammed left and right, forcing speeders off the airlines and establishing dominance through might not speed. CorpSec cruisers were on it's tail, nose to fender. From far away Hacks monitored the situation, diagnostic reports from the truck, visual streams from onboard cameras. The baby in the front seat bounced in excitement.

She switched the truck to autopilot, its flight path following the escaping vehicles. The slicer began to bounce around the city, faster than body or vehicle could chase. Here in Netspace she was faster than a bullet. Far up ahead she switched into a traffic camera, CorpSec used them to register fines for speeding or tag wanted vehicles. Adjusting the cameras len she focused in on the incoming vehicles, zooming in to see the drivers. She didn't recognise most, but out of them she recognised the one that she was here for. Daiya.

Suddenly Hex was leaning out the window, launcher firing at a CorpSec gunship. "Huh," Hacks whispered, far away in the safety of her den, she sipped at her stimcaf and returned her feed to display the truck. She retook control from the autopilot and steered it towards Daiya's vehicle, pedal to the metal. The engine roared, black acrid smoke blowing from its exhaust as the engine pushed its designed limits. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw something strange.

"What the-" she said, adjusting the side mirrors camera to zoom in on the stowaway. Twenty fingers danced across her keypad and the hologram moved in response, a smirk spread across her lips. The baby let go of the wheel and hobbled over to the window, barely tall enough to look out. The baby was screaming now, face turning red. The young toddler plucked the pacifier from its mouth and tossed it at the window, bouncing off and disappeared from view between the seat and door. The baby was banging at the window, screaming and crying. A small hand lifted up at Cyran, fingers clenched as a single tiny middle finger rose at him. The baby was smiling now, giggling in joy.

Round 2
Previous roll : 2 - "Pull over now!"
Next roll : -2 (original -1 + corpsec modifier)

The rearview showed a number of police cars and speeder bikes behind her. Beyond her there was a blinking ‘stop’ signal, at which the numerous vehicles slowed down.

Samnai does the opposite. She hurls the taxi into the right lane.

The police are obviously surprised by this, and fumble in catching up. One speeder bike is faster and maneuvers in front, coming directly in her line of sight.

She swirls to the left to avoid crashing, does a u-turn then speeds up again. The wet road makes this far more bothersome than it needs to be.

In the meantime the bike grows more and more distant from the taxi and eventually like before.

Close call.

Cyran struggled a lot but managed to stay on the door, hanging off the side of the truck. Taking some deep but short breaths he mentally congratulated himself for not being dead yet. He didn’t quite know what was going on with his surroundings. Only able to focus himself and try to save the baby. Only a moment or two later though a loud explosion, and crash startled the bounty hunter and he braced himself tight against the side of the truck.

He let out a pretty terrified scream, that certainly detracted from any cool factor he might have had at this point. Little did he realize a gunship had just exploded close by overhead. When he finally opened one eye and the other he saw that the baby seemed to be having some sort of temper tantrum now. Admittedly Cyran would be upset if he was stuck in a position like this. He flinched as the pacifier was tossed at the widow.

Cyran curiously watched the toddler make their way over just to give him the finger. “Cute kid, real cute.” He muttered to himself, unsure if the baby even knew what was really going on. Bringing his hand to the door handle he tried to open it. But it was locked, just his luck.

Looking at where the truck was heading he needed to be quick unless he snagged on something and dragged away from the truck as well as hurt. But he also didn’t want to be too forceful in his entry, to avoid hurting the baby. Pulling his fist back he clenched it, then a small vibro blade stuck out the end of his vambrace. Hoping that the blade would be fine enough for this maneuver. Pressing the tip of it against the window he scraped across in the shaped outline of a large hole. Using the vibro blade as an improvised glass cutter. Trying not to shatter the glass in fear that the shards may also harm the child. After actually managing to cut out a hole in the window Cyran reached in to scoot the baby aside so that he could get into the driver’s seat without knocking into it. However, the strangest thing happened. His hand moved right through the baby. “What!” He exclaimed and tried again, and again. “You gotta be kidding me.” It was a hologram. Frowning at all his concern and heroism being for nothing he busted through the rest of the window and got into the truck. There he saw the sophisticated holograph rig that was set up around the seats. Now inside he would try and see if he could take manual control of the truck.

"I am surrounded by crazy people today."

"no, no, no, no, no, no, nooooo!"

She dropped faster toward the ground until she saw the lipstick dropping down. She reached out and snatched it from the air and quickly stuffed it into her shorts with a sigh. She was snapped out of her self admiration by two Corpsec foot goons shooting at hee, summoned by the trucker. She grabbed her board and leapt of the ledge again and continued her flight to freedom.

He'd taken a risk on traffic on the Crosstown Throughway, but it had paid off.

Most people opted for the air speeder routes. Better views. Natural light. Less claustrophobia from the tunnel walls. Here in the bowels of the ecumenopolis, traffic was constricted within defined lanes carved through the strata of Denon's vertical sprawl. A lot of commercial traffic came through here, some regular commuters, but it could be hit and miss. The wrong time of day, it could become a logjam with a single crash blocking one of the tunnels.

A flip of the coin, but the traffic was moving and Under Foot was able to weave the garbage hauler smoothly across the lanes. The lumbering landspeeder had a full head of steam at this point, it's top speed climbing as the Squib pushed the boundaries of waste management.

It wasn't every day a sanitation engineer found themselves in a car chase. Except this was Denon and it was probably more common than he realized.

Downshifting, the amber-colored Squib braked into a turn off the Crosstown Throughway and onto the Seven Corners Bypass. The garbage hauler shuddered in protest, as he again put the pedal to the metal, pushing the landspeeder to gather speed again.

If he could take this toward Thirtieth and Tarkin, then he could catch the Mothma Parkway over to Moonfall. And once he was in Moonfall, it was home free.

Now he just had to get there...

"Oh, it just gets better..." -- grumbles to myself as civilian traffic begins to get in the way; fortunately the police lights on my speeder signal lesser vehicles to move aside...

-- the chase takes us over a construction pit where there is an excavation operation in progress -- One of the police speeders goes around the perimeter of the hole, the other chases directly behind Batch Batch along an access ramp, who still has an unwanted passenger...

-- loops the speeder around the hole with the second man; figures out the control configuration; finds the blaster and lines up a shot --

The other guy knows I'm here now when his partner's speeder goes up in a fireball; fortunately, the man lands inside the back of a dumper-droid on a giant mound of dirt. I'm closing the distance between the other remaining speeders quickly now...

Round 3 Post, -1 from the previous roll
Previous Roll:
"Pull over now!"

Perhaps causing a Gunship to drop out of the sky wasn't his smartest move. It certainly drew a lot of attention, and now his hand was played. They knew what he had, and it was possible they'd be wising up to it now. As Cassus tried to spiral deeper into Upcity to make the turns tighter and narrower, he could hear more gunships on patrol. They were keeping their distance, also knew they couldn't quite follow him down there and keep up.

I have to go faster or they're going to cut me off! The thought crossed his mind, that perhaps this job wasn't going to be worth it, and maybe he should dump his cargo for extra speed. That was nonsense talking, though, he was a Bounty Hunter, and he never gave up a mark. He had his 'bounty' dead to rights, and he was going to carry it through to the end.

"Kark!" He exclaimed as blaster bolts flew past him. Patrol bikes!

A few shots down and she was hoping, just hoping, that Daiya Daiya would get away. Peyton knew a thing or four about being in a firefight, and on the run. But these Darkwire folks? Well, she was part of them now, but if the Underground called, she'd have to help… Digressing. These Darkwire folks were literally kids. Fighting the fight that she just joined, sure, but kids all the same. Hopefully the girl knew that she was missing on purpose.

It was hoping to get attention away from that speeder and onto her. She could take a few of these CorpSec types. Her blaster was back in the holster as one of her stunsticks was in her hand now too. That was fine. As she got to the entrance of the alleyway, she found herself thrown into a dive to avoid a few stunshots.

The Force was a headache, that much was clear and obvious, but the semi-aquatic woman was letting it tell her what she needed to hear as she dove to avoid the shot. Getting to her feet she found herself looking three steps ahead. Crate, dumpster, ladder. One two, three… and climb. Once on the roof, she was moving, and jumping, sliding down panels, and getting across. Every so often, she'd toss a small flash bang to try to get attention on her. Calling for aggro was what the kids called it, she thought.

Moving, she leapt to grab hold of an auto-taxi and broke into it. Taking a second, she caught her breath as she went through her bag to get what she needed… Multitool, no… There it was, datacard. One of the ones she had primed for hacking into transport vehicles. Inputting it, she accessed the datapad she carried and took the firewall down. And the cab gave a lurch.

"Feth, right, mine now…"
She was moving her cab on her own and looked out… Speeder bikes, and gunships? They were coming her way? "Feth!" Looking over, she saw the pilot on the speederbike.

That was a friendly?

"What did you do?" She all but screamed, motioning that she did NOT care for the gunships. She had an idea, but if this was who she thought… Maybe they had another idea. Gaining control she was watching ahead.

Daiya was thrown from her misanthrophy by the sudden warmth of touch on her cheek. She scrambled against one end of the speeder seat, before finding herself looking into the friendly eyes of a grinning Hex Hex . The teen let out a relieved breath, but before she could respond the blue girl was gone. Daiya crawled quickly to the other edge of the seat, leaning off over the side to see the dizzying heights around them and the traffic zipping past dozens of levels below.

With no sign of Hex to be found.

"Follow her!" Daiya shouted, waving her blaster back in the Gran's front seat. The driver gave her an irate look, and she frowned at his attitude. In his rear-view mirror ahead, she spotted the pink stain of lips outlined on her cheek, and the reminder only deepened her scowl at the driver. "What is it with you Upcity beings? I thought you were supposed to be all nice and pampered up here."

"I'm from District 9. And your fare is over."

Stunned, the young shadowrunner sat back in her seat. Her mouth hung open as she pulled up her satchel, holding it close to rummage through with words under her breath. "Fine!" Daiya pulled out a few makeup brushes, and thrust them forward in her fist toward the driver. "Do you know how much these are worth? That's real Selonian hair, the best you'll find outside some gene-lab's special breeding line. Take it and follow that fething hoverboard!"

A tense moment passed in the open-air cab, before the Gran's rough fingers seize the brushes from her grip. A half-grin returns to her face, fueled by a grim satisfaction at her success so far today. Even doling out a few of her prizes from today would still leave the young shadowrunner far enough ahead, and the adrenaline that pumped through her veins was accompanied by a thread of relief now. She gripped the seat cushion in front of her, squinting through the layers of traffic and growing dimness to watch for Hex.

The taxi leveled out at a lower level, coming parallel to one of the roadways through the Upcity, and a crushing sorrow filled the teen. She blinked back the dampness from her eyes, tears sapping what was left of her energy. "Thanks for nothing!"

Daiya fumed, her arms folded tightly against her chest, trying to stem the tide of her remorse. From what little she knew of Hex, the teen had a feeling the blue girl could handle herself. It still didn't make her feel better to see their brief encounter ripped apart so violently. Bitterness filled her mouth with bile, and as her eyes latched on to a string of CorpSec sirens flying through signals in mad pursuit of someone ahead. "There, follow them!"

This time, to her delight, the Gran complied.

"Need a hand?!" The young shadowrunner finally spied the driver of the vehicle being chased, and she had to look twice to spot Samnai Rouber Samnai Rouber against the disguise the woman wore. Daiya tried not to feel crestfallen about her discovery, hoping instead that thwarting another Seccer pursuit would make her feel better about losing track of Hex in the chaos. Daiya leaned forward, goading the driver on with her voice and the pressure of her blaster in his chest. As her taxi drew alongside one of the Seccer vehicles, she raised her hand toward the patrol officers in the universal sign of friendship.

Giggling to herself, Daiya ignored the groan of the Gran driver, and grabbed his controls to veer their speeder taxi dangerously close to the pursuit vehicle. Her gambit was rewarded by the speeder's swerve in her direction, and though the Gran barely needed her encouragement, she shouted at him, "Now they're on our tail! Go go go!"

Daiya laughed herself silly at her ploy, a lightheaded euphoria driving her onward as the chase continued.

The high speed blue flash continued careening down the street with corpsec hot on her pig tails leaning right she zoomed off of the main thoroughfare and into the side roads, all of a sudden the atmosphere changed, the security forces stopped at entrance to the alley and watched her zoom off. Hex felt she was finally getting somewhere, she had a moment to take stock of her situation as she slowed down and just coasted along.

'...what are they looking at?...'
Hex just shrugged as she observed a group of heavily tattooed men on the corner watching her scoot past.
'...gangers, watch yourself...'
"uh huh"
Hex replied only half paying attention to her friend, her mind elsewhere, distracted by something that played on her mind.

The gang members looked over at her and one started making a crude jesture as she looked back, waving his arm in the air and grabbing his crotch... boys.

'...he is asking for it!...'

Gangs were annoying she had been in a few herself, wait, was she in a gang now? She supposed Darkwire was a gang, but they seemed different to most of her experiences, she might even be able to make something of her self.

'...once an expendable asset, always and expendable asset...'

Hex furrowed her brow trying to clear the doubts from her mind, but if she was honest, she had no real evidence to suggest these people cared any more for her than on the past. Oh well, nothing to lose then,

With a whirring boost of speed, the speeder launched itself upward over the ramp, and ungracefully it caught another hit to its underside as it landed leaving a nasty scratch, scraping across the bottom of it. Batch grimaced as his machine was punished, that hurt his soul too! He looked behind him at Saija Kwann Saija Kwann seeing she was helping him out! Wanting to say thanks but he got a kick from the guy above, his grip was slipping along the side, and there was a small fire coming out the back of the machine.

The choice to jump for it, wrestle for control again, or ask for help.

He held up a hand to Saija Kwann Saija Kwann trying to get her attention, he really needed the help! This was going very badly. Cassus Akovin Cassus Akovin trying not to get shot! The driver of Batch's bike saw a patrol bike and aimed right for it, trying to knock Batch off or turn him into a paste along its side.

In proper holovid style, there was now a chase ahead Cassus Akovin Cassus Akovin , a chase behind with Batch, and a chase behind that with Saija Kwann Saija Kwann ! Hope nobody fell off! Batch wasn't even driving anymore!

The flaming hoverbike left a burning trail of smoke behind, hopefully not distracting Saija Kwann Saija Kwann from getting her last corpo! His bike continued right for one of the those chasing behind Cassus Akovin Cassus Akovin , trying to knock off its unfortunate darkwire passenger along its side, and Batch ended up….

Before I can catch up to Batch Batch , I have another corpo cop to deal with; too close for blasters, he's pulled alongside and nudges against the back side of my speeder, attempting to tap me the right way to make me spin out.

--compensates with the opposite side maneuvering thruster, slams on the brakes, lets him fly past before I can line up a shot--

--jams the trigger-- A blaster bolt lands dead center in his rear mounted engine block, sending the speeder bike up in flames.

Now I fly up to the dangling corpo trying to cause Batch Batch to wipe out. I can't risk lining up a shot with the blaster, so we gotta do this down 'n' dirty. All I need to do is get within arms reach and... REEEEEE!!!! --narrowly misses an oncoming civilian speeder--

"Fark! That was too close!"

"Oh come on," Hacks muttered to herself as a damage alert splashed across one of her screens. The window of the garbage truck had been smashed. The baby was thrashing violently now, face turning red from screaming. Lines of code formed under her careful guidance as she instructed the truck to continue to follow its target with autopilot. The baby went silent, its eyes glistened with tears as a saddened frown developed over its face, then the baby vanished. The holoprojectors shut down.

"Oi," Hacks said, projecting her voice to the inside of the cab, watching the man carefully as he seemed to look for a way to regain control of the truck, "I'm not here for you, get out of my way before I make you." Her fingers tapped with inhuman speed, rattling away matrices of complex code. The trucks onboard computer began to emit wavelengths undetectable to the human eye. If Cyrans helmet had no sophisticated intrusion countermeasure programming, the trojan Hacks was beaming into the cabin could potentially infect his helmets systems via commlink.

"This is your last warning," she offered with cold resolve.

"...delays on the west-bound side of the Jan Dodonna," he heard, pausing there as he listened and tried to map out the roads ahead.

He was going to be coming up on a junction with the Dodonna before he got to Moonfall. But was it the west-bound side? Or the east-bound side?

Was the west-bound side the one that headed toward Seven Corners?

When the garbage hauler had exploded into the upper street, a noodle stand had been knocked skyward while the Squib wrestled to get the speeder off the sidewalk and back onto the route proper.

The ramen and noodles, of course, just went flying. And possibly toward some CorpSec windshields.

Poking his head up to get an idea of what was happening, it seemed there were sirens, and lights, and some chick with two-toned hair. Had she been with them for the freight hauling job?

She didn't really look like the type to work in the moving industry, but who was he to judge?

"Mind if I cut in?" the Squib asked, before downshifting and putting his foot to the floor.

"This is gonna be fun!" Das exclaimed as she closed the speeder door and punched the ignition.

"How are we lookin', Sam?" she asked, glancing at her wrist-mounted comm-link. The AI's face appeared on screen, his eyebrows furrowed with concern. He clearly wasn't prepared for a chase through Denon's air-lanes. Sam Kolburn Sam Kolburn dredged on about the last time Das threw herself into a speeder without properly calibrating it according to the manufacturer's specifications, but she didn't pay him any mind. Instead, she flicked a few switches and accelerated into the air-lane, weaving from lane to lane in an attempt to create a buffer between her and the CorpSec patrol shuttles. By now, they'd be swarming the Museum.

Someone spilled, but who?

It didn't matter now. She floored the speeder, putting as much distance between her and the Corpies as she could. Just when she thought she'd gotten a solid lead on them, a CorpSec speeder darted into the lane beside her. The pilot butted his speeder into Das', causing her to swerve into the oncoming lane. Das gripped the wheel and stabilized her speeder, reaching for her blaster.

"It's you or me, buddy..."

ROUND 4
Vehicle: Speeder Taxi
Previous Roll: 3-1=2 | "Pull over now!"
This Roll: -1 modifier from previous roll

Daiya's wary blue eyes darted from her skittish taxi driver to the threatening Seccer vehicles bearing down on her. Her lungs offered up only shallow breaths, leaving her strained mind short on power. As her eyes glanced back to the CorpSec pursuers behind her, her mind ran out of feths to give and she pointed the blaster back to the functional law behind her.

Then again, there are no laws on Denon, only CorpSec.

"Chit!" the teen swore at herself. At her frayed nerves that brought her close to driving a bad situation worse. At the seconds lost in pointing the wrong blaster at them. It was the other twin of this blaster that was filled with the careful balance of gases that would make gravity go haywire. She looked down at her satchel, fumbling for the other one, and fell to the floor of the taxi when the driver swerved.

"Hey, what the feth—" Daiya started as she picked herself up, her eyes growing wide when she spied the gigantic speeder that might not have been hauling trash at the moment, but the teen's wrinkled nose strongly suggested otherwise. The being driving it, very poorly, casually tossed a quippy phrase at her, leaving Daiya's mouth hanging open at the furry driver of the garbage speedertruck and hauling her cleverness away. "Yeah, I guess you can cut in..."

She blinked back confusion and a heady blur from her eyes, throwing her head back into the driver's side of the seat divider. One of the Gran's three eyes was trained on the teen, who barely gave it a second thought by now. "Trash Bantha just gave us an opening, what are you waiting for? Drive, drive, drive!"

CorpSec was still on their tail, despite what help the bushy-tailed garbage driver had just provided. The young shadowrunner swallowed, turning back toward the maelstrom of sirens and lights gaining behind her. Daiya swung her arm back, and aimed the blaster. Nerves wrenched through the young shadowrunner, knowing what would happen if the Seccers actually caught up to her after this. Running away was one thing, but shooting back...she'd be lucky if she was actually caught alive enough to cuff and arrest.

Better be lucky, then.

She squeezed her finger, firing off a shot of gravity-upending madness at the lead Seccer vehicle...or so she hoped.
