PERSONALITY AND BELIEFS

An intellectual, logical man with a strange sense of humor and a blunt demeanor. Views science and technology as the ultimate boons to sentient life, and sees himself as a crusader for scientific inquiry.

STRENGTHS

Intellectual powerhouse - The somewhat dim Yaka brain has been sublimely enhanced with cybernetic neural processors which let him think more quickly, more deeply, and remember things with exacting precision.

Physically formidable - The natural biology of the Yaka is stronger and more robust than human average. This has been further augmented by implants which reinforce the skeleton, protect and enhance neural transmissions across the spine, and provide redundancy to liver and kidneys

Calculated Combat - Has professional competency with martial arts, melee combat, and blaster or mounted weapon marksmanship. These are programmed responses within his cybernetic neural implants and occur with machine-like efficiency.

WEAKNESSES

Social Ineptitude - He's a strange duck, thanks to the cybernetic influence on his brain. He doesn't relate to most people, doesn't share their perspectives or priorities, and has an odd sense of humor and blunt manner.

Cybernetic Vulnerability - While his cybernetics are programmed to reset if disabled or sliced, he can be incapacitated for a period of time by technologies designed to interfere with machines, like electromagnetic pulses, ion bolts, and similar phenomena.

Juice Me - Derron's cybernetic implants require recharging once per week for eight hours. If he is ever somewhere without access to modern technology for more than a week, he will revert to a simple-minded natural Yaka until he can recharge. He also loses the benefit of his organ redundancy, and extensive memory.

HISTORY

Derron is the child of Dora and Vekram Daks, and was born on Yaka, the Yaka homeworld, in a regional nation known as Croya. Ever since the Arkanians interfered with Yakan development to cybernetically enhance their minds, cybernetic improvement had been a way of life for Derron's people. He was implanted at a young age, with implants continuing to be upgraded as he aged. Due to this implantation and integration from childhood, he did not develop the usual social skills of other sentient species. Because his parents preferred a subtler approach than some other Yakans, the only evidence of his implantations are in the scars in various places of his body. Although, they do show up on scans.

Raised to value intellectual pursuits, Derron soon came to the conclusion that the pursuit of knowledge was itself his core value. Because scientists could most easily forward their pursuits if someone knowledgeable was expanding the frontiers of sentient knowledge, he decided to pursue field research. His goal was to collect cartographical, biological, botanical, geological, and astrophysical knowledge about the universe.

To this end, he founded DDSI - Dynamic Discoveries & Scientific Initiatives - and took investments from his family and other Yakans to purchase a frigate equipped with everything he would need to push the bounds of sentient knowledge according to his convictions. He is bold in the pursuit of knowledge, but sometimes makes the mistake of thinking his programmed cybernetic defense programs contain the sum total of everything he needs to survive in a harsh galaxy. Often, it is enough. Sometimes, he is surprised by particularly creative or adept threats.

It's a dangerous universe out there...

DESCRIPTION
The Mecetti Nationalized Industries offer bespoke custom ship builds for those clients who can afford it, via their Obulette and Grand Architect shipyards. DDSI took advantage of this offering when requesting a research frigate built to their requirements. Using the Vigil class as a base, the hullform was scaled up by 37% to accommodate the necessary support craft capacity. Standard Turbolasers and Laser Cannons were swapped for Heavy models. Antenna and sensors were enlarged to better serve exploratory needs, and the interior decks were completely reconfigured according to the new volume. Finally, larger type II engines and reactors provided needed power and propulsion for the increased mass.

The ship was designed to be tough enough to survive the unknown, well-armed enough to fend off rimward threats, and advanced enough to act as a complete research facility in the field. Moreover, DDSI wanted it to be uniquely equipped to interface with its CEO and other cybernetic crew members. The result was the custom 'Horizon' class, headed by the DDSI Horizon, the CEO's corporate flagship. Although the Horizon was specifically designed for DDSI, the hull can be manufactured in similar configurations on demand for other clients.

Despite its many advantages, the Horizon does have an important weakness (other than its price.) Its neuromachine interface could leave it vulnerable to skilled slicing (hacking) attacks.

What's six meters tall and nine meters long and built like a tank? The TREV-1 Tracked Rover Exploration Vehicle from Tampson Consolidated, a subsidiary of the House Mecetti Nationalized Industries. Built for explorers who might have to work on gravitically unstable environments, this tracked rover can navigate almost any terrain at safe speeds suitable for gathering information about the environment. The vehicle may not be fast, but it is powerful, able to charge through brush and small trees. It was designed to emit various damage types so that alien beasts resistant to one or more elements might still be confronted successfully. The rifle also has a vidsensor in the scope, allowing images of dangerous animals to be transmitted to a ship, fellow explorer, or even the user's own helmet head's up display. The rifle is long-ranged and powerful, but is also somewhat large and heavy, negatively impacting its popularity despite its other advantages. The amount of cryoban and fuel wasted when the magazine must be swapped out due to energy depletion also causes consternation to those who are cost conscious.

The crew of the Horizon has been together for a year, ever since the DDSI CEO managed to get together the necessary investments to fund a research frigate. They are excited about their positions and have good morale. There is a sense of prestige about being the initial officers among (hopefully) a soon to be larger fleet of research vessels in DDSI service. All officers receive non-voting shares in the company, in addition to their salaries, which makes them especially dedicated to the success of the organization.

Still, new recruits are tasked to job-shadow with experienced members for six weeks so that they acclimate to DDSI policy, equipment, and personnel.

DESCRIPTION
A custom build for DDSI, the High Energy Research Shield-Cruiser was the most difficult build ever undertaken by the House Mecetti Nationalized Industries of the Tapani Sector. Based on the Shield Ships of the Republic Engineering Corporation, the High Energy Research Shield-Cruiser is massively upscaled so that it can double as a Fleet Maintenance and Transport vessel, and not just a research ship.

The primary intent behind the ship was to create a vessel that could conduct up-close research on magnetars and other intense astral phenomena. Normal research ships would be seriously damaged by the powerful emissions of the universe's most dramatically potent anomalies and energetic stars.

The robust shield generators of the ship, and its massive forward armored section, allow it to fully protect the crew and systems from any threat it may be facing. Up to eight frigates of 400 meters in length or less can be docked behind the forward armored section, gaining protection of the ship's shield envelope as well as its incredibly thick forward Turadium Alloy armor.

In addition to its remarkable defenses, the ship has a massive internal volume that can accommodate numerous support squadrons, scientific labs and research facilities, and amenities for its 22,000 passengers and crew. This number of passengers and crew are actually quite low for a vessel of this size. The low crew complement is a feat accomplished due to the ship's extensive automation systems and cybernetic interfaces, as well as its droid assistance with various functions.

Because the ship is meant to endure terrible energetic environments, it has no external armaments, which might otherwise be damaged by extreme radiation and provide a conduit to the internal circuitry of the ship for dangerous electromagnetic impulses. (Magnetars and similar stellar phenomena can have twenty or more times the electromagnetic output of a planetary defense Ion Cannon.) It was already challenging to provide the necessary protection for the ship's advanced sensor arrays, which have triple-redundancy just like its shield systems. The cost of providing similar redundancy and protection for weapons systems was seen as excessive, with the shield-ship relying on its embarked or docked craft for protection if needed.

All officers receive non-voting shares in the company, in addition to their salaries, which makes them especially dedicated to the success of the organization.
