OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Group Name: Data Savants
  • Affiliation: The Globex Corporation
  • Classification: Researchers / Managers
  • Description: Engineers, artists, physicists, and administrators - the Data Savants are a diverse lot unified by a prodigal aptitude for digital systems, razor-sharp intellects, and the use of high-end mind-machine interfaces. Their role is to coordinate the efforts of data-brains and AI, ensuring that they fulfil whatever purpose Globex has assigned them to the exacting standards the corporation demands. As a single Data Savant can be responsible for projects worth billions of credits, they are among the corporation's best-paid employees.
UNIT INFORMATION
  • Unit Size: Small
  • Unit Availability: Rare
  • Unit Experience: Master
  • Equipment: N2 Neural Interfaces
  • Specialization Function: Data Savants are responsible for directing the efforts of AI and so virtually never handle 'field work' - most do not even show up to meetings with ranking executives in person, instead attending as a hologram or sending a droid in their stead. They tend to work out of Globex's largest, most central facilities - as a result, it is unheard of for one to be kidnapped, despite their immense value. If they have family or friends, these are generally under 24/7 surveillance by the Globex Security Division to reduce the risk of blackmail.
  • Force Abilities (Force User Units Only): Perhaps one in every five Data Savants are Force Sensitive; these almost exclusively specialise in Mechu-Deru, Precognition (utility prescience, not danger sense), or related practices.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
  • Ivory Tower Admins: Data Savants have the skills, cybernetics, and mental attributes needed to coordinate the inhuman intellects of AI systems. They direct vast manufacturing chains, design innovative technologies, manipulate financial systems, direct the flow of information from surveillance systems and data trawlers, and even serve as 'generals in digital wars' as part of Globex's cybersecurity division.
  • Ivory Tower Admins: Data Savants are generally located far from where their orders are executed; if you cut off power to whichever facility they operate out of (remember to fry the backup generators and the emergency batteries), they are effectively useless.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Dedicated as it is to automation, the Globex Corporation's success is not built on the backbreaking labour of the many, but the sharp wit of the few. It is autonomous systems, not hordes of office workers, that drive its most crucial enterprises - but sometimes a free-willed touch is needed.

As Globex is reluctant to free its droids from blissful servitude, this touch is best given by organics.

In Globex's hierarchy, the 'Data Savants' that fill this role are near the top. They have salaries matching or exceeding conventional executives, top of the line facilities with plentiful amenities, and personal security measures that exceed that of some planetary heads-of-state - only partially because they, unlike career politicians, have no need to attend social gatherings except as part of recreational activities.

Given the asocial nature of many Data Savants, it is not unheard of for them to go months or years without meeting a fellow organic in person. As one noted while corresponding with a peer: "Having shared my vision with supercomputers and danced to the tune of ever-shifting algorithms, the inane chattering of witless strangers holds no appeal. I hardly remember the last time I was plugged out - fully plugged out, I mean."

It is the official stance of the Board of Directors that all the Data Savants are of sound mind; privately, some have their doubts.

It is not unusual for former Data Savants to literally have confidential memories erased. It's in the contract, of course.
