SPECIAL FEATURES

The ACU is a droid unit controlled by a Shard, a silicon-based life whose form resembles a crystal. This means that the machine is not controlled by programming, but by a living entity that uses its droid body to interact with the world, use weapons and engage in combat. This makes the unit a hybrid, not quite organic, but also not a pure droid. It combined mechanical tirelessness and brutre strength with the ingenuity normally associated with organics, as they are not bound by linear droid programming. Moreover, Shards can use the Force.

The unit can utilise a variety of weapons. It possesses an advanced suite of sensors and scanners. Their mobility is improved by repulsor lift boosters, which compensates for their cumbersome nature. Laminanium grants self-healing qualities. The Shard and the power core are located inside the torso and the the unit is still capable of engaging in combat after decapacitation, though with reduced efficacy, as sensors would be strongly impaired and it would get in the way of communications, unless telepathy can be used. Components like sensors, vocabulators and comms can be found in the head area.

The unit can still fight after limb loss, though this will obviously limit its efficacy. The machine uses Laminanium in its body, which gives it limited self-repair abilities. Moreover, the droid is equipped Phylactery Scarab Droids. A singularity projector allows limited teleportation, but is restricted by range and short duration.

STRENGTHS
  • War machine. They are heavily armoured, resilient and incredibly strong.
  • Laminanium grants it self-healing qualities. The Laminanium is good at regenerating from damage inflicted by blaster and slugthrower weapons within minutes. More extreme damage takes less than a day.
  • They have the mechanical strength and tirelessness of a droid, but are controlled by a Shard. Thus they have the ingenuity and flexibility normally associated with an organic being. Moreover, Shards can use the Force, though individual capabilities obviously vary.
  • Limited teleportation ability.
WEAKNESSES
  • While not terribly slow, they are not very spritely and lack agility. This is something a more agile opponent could potentially exploit. Moreover, they are big targets and thus very distinctive, which makes them poor at sneaking around and remaining undetected on the battlefield. Bottom line, the opponent will probably see and hear them coming.
  • The Laminanium is of limited help against massive amounts of damage. It is better at repairing small penetrations or cuts, but less effective against severe blows, explosions and heavy weapons. Even with the Phylactery drones, the unit is not invulnerable.
  • The Shard is its most sensitive component. It is heavily reinforced and shielded, but heavy attacks or massive ion damage can disable or destroy it. A functioning Shard is needed to give commands to the mechanical body. Should the Shard be broken, the mechanical body will become inert since the entity controlling it has expired.
  • Teleportation is limited by duration and range.
DESCRIPTION

Shards are a curious sort of being. They use machines to move and interact with the world, yet they are not droids, but a peculiar silicon-based species that look like crystals. Moreover, they are able to use the Force. Some of them learned the ways of the Force from a Jedi, but he was excommunicated by his Order. Centuries ago, Emperor Palpatine tried to wipe them out, as he disdained all Force-Users he could not control. But some survived, going underground. More recently, a group of vengeful Shards who had gone into exile and bided their time for centuries tried to exact vengeance upon the galaxy. The perpetrators had died centuries ago, but then these Shards had been corrupted by eldritch abominations.

The Incursion did not go well. However, Enyo Typhos briefly worked with these Shards to strike a blow against her creators. She then turned on their mad leader and was able to sway the more reasonable ones. Enyo is no Shard, but feels a degree of kinship with them. Her body is that of a machine, but it is guided by a human brain rather than a droid one. Thus she exists in a state of limbo.

She has designed a a very limited number of droids to host some of her Shard allies. Their official name is Autonomous Command Units - ACUs. This is a dull name, so many prefer the far less bland Darkshard Commanders. Enyo disapproves because of course she does. Rather than the HRDs many of the Shards who work with her use, these are not infiltrators, but commanders and elite combatants. Their role is to lead hosts of soldiers into combat and smite her enemies, especially high-value targets such as Jedi and Sith. Thus each unit has received extensive training in melee combat, especially in using lightsabres, electrostaffs and enchanted weapons.

Moreover, they possess impressive durability and strength. They are able to smash through barriers, have the strength to mess up bones with their hands and use their bodies themselves as weapons. Each unit is capable of utilising a lightsabre, as well as other armaments. Limbs can be severed but they will press on regardless and can continue combat after the head is severed, albeit with reduced efficacy.

Furthermore, they possess self-repair capabilites, though these are obviously better at healing minor amounts of damage. Their bodies do not tire or feel pain. Because each body is controlled by a Shard, it is an individual rather than an automaton. This means they have their own thoughts, memories and personalities and can learn. Of course, this also means that they can have emotional reactions to events, whereas a droid cannot. However, Shards tend to take a long view of things and are not inclined to rashness unlike most typical organic beings.

A Darkshard Commander is equipped with a singularity projector. When activated, it makes the droid 'disappear' by folding space around it and ripping it out of normal space. This allows it to reappear in another space, or the one it seemingly vacated. However, the device is limited by range. Lengthy teleportations are not possible and there are limits on how far the machine can travel. Moreover, a poor-planned phasing jump could result in it say being stuck in a wall or similar. Another impediment is time, as it can only phase for a couple seconds. Moreover, there is a cooldown period between each shift. It is fairly brief, but means the Darkshard cannot use the device all the time. Nonetheless, it is useful against foes who possess super speed or can use the Force to shift themselves.

The unit features a full suite of sensor equipment and targeting equipment. A set of Repulsor Lift Boosters allows the Shard controlling the unit to make significant jumps and survive falls from great heights. Needless to say the Shard is the most vulnerable piece of the design. For this reason, it is located in the heavily protected torso reason. However, should the Shard be destroyed, the unit will be rendered inert, as there will be no entity controlling it. The Shard can be removed from the droid body if needed, but this obviously takes some time.
