Eriadu
Novu Merchant's Annual Ball

Just keep to the role, Kaile girl, just keep to the role.

They'd be arriving soon. Asmus had rented - or bought - a rather ridiculously expensive airspeeder that would take them to their destination. Although to be fair, if it wasn't for her slight nerves she'd likely be ogling and wanting to pop the hood to check it out herself.

Some things were still hard to hold back for the off and on mechanic. She might have played different parts throughout her life with a variety of skillsets, but she still enjoyed turning a wrench or two. The past few days with Asmus only seemed to remind her more and more of that.

Her hair had been cut short, reaching just to the tips of her shoulders and dyed blonde. For a few minutes she'd almost considered dying it a bright pink but with Asmus helping her and his fingers massaging through her hair, well, mind went elsewhere and things just took a turn to take advantage of his water refresher.

The size of which was still tickling her. Much the less, that it used water of all things.

In the back of Kaile's mind, she knew that she was simply going from one thing to the next to keep her mind busy. Wandering thoughts and all.

The more distance that they took away from Asmus' beach home, the more delicate those days seemed to be. Fragile. Easily knocked over by the responsibilities that they both had. The reason why they were here.

The cosmos might have knocked them together one more time but the circumstances did not change. Kaile was an SIS agent. Asmus a Wraith Commander.

Of course, that was hard to remember when the man had been practically been bursting with energy with helping her find a suitable dress for this occasion...

Red wasn't usually his colour, but he wasn't attending alone tonight. The deep red of his waistcoat and cravat nicely matched the detailing on Kaile’s dress. His shirt was a subtle off-white to match too. Obviously his cufflinks were topped with the same red fabric with intricate black detailing as his waistcoat.

In a sea of colour he was proud of their luck. Kaile had gone from bemused to downright amused at the entire process. Asmus wasn't sure that was going to hold when they would have to find a new look for every ball through the season.

No one announced them as they arrived. It was as Asmus had been explaining. They were deliberately different from the nobility whilst being exactly the same. If they hadn't become as entrenched as the nobility then they wouldn't have existed in almost the same state for the last few thousand years. The nobility changed too. They stuck to muted shades and blacks for their events. A few decades and they would probably switch just to site each other.

“You look beautiful. Always,” Asmus said with a small squeeze of her hand. It was almost a parting note. A last comment right from the heart before the evening games began. There wasn't much resting on the night. It was just a case of settling into the community, starting some dialogue with different families. They would start digging into the possibility of a family feeding the Empire secrets of the Alliance more aggressively at the next event.

“Oh, trouble at two o'clock, he muttered. Asmus’ mother had seen them too. “I had hoped for a couple of glasses first,” he sighed.

“Oh, try the canapés here, they're always the best,” he added quickly, amusing Kaile with the sudden change in tone.

Inara Janes, CEO of Schmidt and Rees. His father wasn't in sight. The family resemblance was far stronger with his mother. She had seemed slightly put out when he'd explained in the holo that he was bringing someone to the season. That had caught him off guard as she'd been trying to pair him off with more determination the last two years.

It was all a medley of vibrant colors and clinks of free-flowing glasses of refreshment. One waiter had weaved through the crowd, expertly holding a tray of delicate flukes filled with sparkling champagne or some other equally expensive spirit. It took a bit of reminding by Kaile’s internal thoughts to keep her expression from spilling over her awe and amusement for all to see.

Not that Asmus left a moment for Kaile to process the first few minutes within the expanse of the ballroom they ambled to. With a side swipe comment about trouble amidst a suggestion to try the canapes, it was a little hard to keep up. Kaile internally braced herself, believing that he meant perhaps one of the noble families coming their way.

They had gone through dozens of holograms depicting various faces, titles, and names. Retaining the information was easy; as an Agent, Kaile had been trained to gather and record as much data as she could and store it for later use.

Registering that the purposeful sashay of one particular woman in regalia was in fact, Asmus’ mother was another thing entirely.

The corner of Kaile’s mouth gave a twitch. Fingers slightly went curling inward, as if searching for fabric from her skirt to gather in an unconscious show of nerves.

“Canapes? That’s where your mind gets goin’ to now?” she barely managed in a half whisper, chocolate brown eyes widening from the approaching woman towards the water, back to the canapes and then at Asmus -- the intense desire to keep her hands busy went swelling within her.

Reading what she could of his mother, it appeared she was quite put out. The closer she came, the more Kaile could see the strong resemblance. From the angular features towards the dark hair; one couldn’t deny that Asmus was her child.

Although they didn’t seem to have the same temperament at first glance at all.

It always amazed him that his mother could move with such purpose whilst also appearing to float through the crowd effortlessly. She was, by a large margin, the greater force of will between his two parents.

“It'll be fine,” Asmus said in a low voice as she closed upon them. He believed that, for the most part. In his mind the real issue was not introducing Kaile to his mother, it was that this was a facade. He couldn't slip into a mask the way that she could. Asmus wanted this to be real. He wanted to be standing her with Kaile at his side because they had chosen to be here. To be introducing Kaile as his partner because he wanted to make that statement to his parents.

But he was hungry. Not even the situation at hand could change that. Now that need would be interrupted by a potentially long conversation. Hopefully someone after a Rees contract would interrupt them.

“Asmus! It is lovely to see you home!” she declared as she embraced him. “And this is...Abi was it?” She asked. Asmus had at least given fair warning. That he was coming with someone.

“Yes mother, she works with me at Incom,” Asmus replied.

“You’re more than welcome here!” Inara said, moving to give Kaile a hug and kiss on the cheek. The merchants were at times deliberately informal, if only to deliberately distance themselves from the nobility class. At the same time not a single silver hair moved out of place as she leant in. Everything with his mother seemed practised, rehearsed. She sounded almost completely genuine but there was a slightly change in tone. It was the tone of a parent slightly disappointed that their own plans had been slightly undone. As if Asmus had lost his tie on class photo day.

[member="Asmus Janes"]

It was surreal. In the thousands of fantasies Kaile had envisioned in the darkest of times or in passing fancy, coming face to face with Asmus’ mother was not one of them.

The entire course of conversation took only a few seconds, but for Kaile it seemed to drag on forever. Or more aptly, it just brought her into a state of keen awareness and shot nerves. As Kaile, she was a nervous, writhing kettle of Giju -- as Abi, Asmus’ Incom mechanic flight of fancy, the role the agent was set to play, wouldn’t be consider it daunting beyond the fancy surroundings. She was supposed to play an ambitious working woman. The --

The hug and the kiss were unexpected. It was not an act when Kaile’s eyes went a little wide and she did a small attempt at mimicking the greeting. Although, even the Lorrdian couldn’t help but catch the slight rehearsed motions Asmus’ mother would give, a cordial if pleasant expression that belied the slight tightening at the corners of her eyes in disappointment when Inara went to look back at Asmus.

He gave the appearance of strained restlessness while his mother had the aura of one who had a few words to say but couldn’t quite do to the extent she wanted to in public company.

“Hello -- thank you!” that came out a bit more breathy than Kaile intended, and she gave an internal wince. Seeking to rectify herself, the bottle blonde brought a half smile to her lips and added with genuine admiration,”Your dress is beautiful!”

Everything was a splash of color and jewels and lovely scented perfumes and colognes. Yeah, this was not her typical undercover work. Kaile was far more comfortable waitressing at the local Yum Bunnies than this.

By contrast Asmus had imagined introducing Kaile to his mother. Those times when she had steered a remote conversation towards his personal life. To find out when, if ever, he was going to settle down. It was as sure to cast his mind back as a few glasses of whiskey.

Over time he had started to see the world more through her eyes, something he hadn't been able to do when he was younger. Not when Kaile had met him for the first time. There was still a gulf between them, but he understood that both of them regretted that fact in their own way. He had told Kaile much of his perspective back on the Quintessence. He had tried to impart a little of her perspective before leaving the beach house.

For Inara, her son had been spirited away by a wild relative. She had rebuilt the business, laid out a privileged path for her only child. And he had been pulled from it into a world fraught with danger.

Asmus now having a real career and a home on Eriadu were positive steps for her, that closed that gulf a little and she had come to accept that he was his own man who would most definitely make his own mistakes. Asmus knew that she wasn't the kind of person to accept half measures. He would have to live with gentle nudges toward what she felt what was the right path for him for the rest of his life.

“Why thank you! Did Asmus manage to get you shopping?” Inara asked with a smile. Her keen eye saw an Eriadu style. An inquisitive look was passed towards her son, which she hoped Abi didn't see. When they had spoken he had seemed excited to bring her here. He had tried to hide it but she knew her own son. It wasn't like him to bring someone from off world to a merchant's ball.

This wasn't normal. And she had made some inroads talking their host, Hindell Holt into introducing his own son to Asmus. They were both returning from a rebellious phase. Although, as far as Inara had heard Jisteen Holt’s phase had been more backpacking around the outer rim and spending a few months on Ryloth, not fighting a war.

But Asmus couldn't be deterred from the paths he chose. That much she knew. If this was going to be a longer term thing then she was going to have to feign some interest or else suffer complaints either directly or through her husband.

“The Holt’s keep wonderful gardens, you will have to go and see them!” Inara added. It wasn't that popular for merchants to live in large old mansions like this. It was considered behaviour more befitting of the nobility. But Holt and his extended family all had apartments in the upper floors.

Was it that evident? Part of Kaile struggled with reocognizing the fact that she was playing a part and another still fluttering with the nervousness of actually coming face to face with Asmus’ mother.

It made her nervous, her heart racing right a the curve of her throat. Loud enough for her to hear, I bet, came the runaway thought, before the agent brought a smile to her face and with that upturned twist of her lip, replied, “He did, makes me feel fancy.” Truth.

At least that wasn’t a lie.

A bit of color drew to her cheeks. The gardens? A voice in her mind took that nugget of information; it might become useful later on should she need to spy on anyone.

“I’ll make sure to remind Asmus to take me for a stroll then,”. Kaile added, having to keep her focus to not revert to her twang in nervousness.

“Seems like the party is just getting started,” it was small talk conversation, and Kaile could tell to a degree that Inara was humoring her as well as Asmus. The Lorrdian could tell that the woman cared for her son so she was making an effort — but it was just to be cordial, nothing more than that.

Kaile didn’t take too much offense to it; she could see where Inara was coming from. Reading Asmus file and understanding just what role Abi was supposed to be meant that the girl Kaile was playing wasn’t meant but a passing fancy. At least, to the degree, Kaile could understand. There was much still that she didn’t know of Asmus and she was making assumptions based on her own fears and set expectations. Something that the Lorrdian still struggled with.

The girl seemed a little nervous in her presence. Inara always liked to think about what could be. Lay out all the possibles and steer the path that most closely matched what she wanted. Some might have called that selfish. These were difficult times. And in those times she had steered the company back to strong footing.

There were members of her own board that were nervous around her. In this case it could have been because she had genuine plans for Asmus or perhaps it was just being taken to a grand ball and how overwhelming it was. If it was the former then there was little to be done about her own son. He'd known shown much of an interest in settling down despite the odd nudge. Odd nudge and more direct, if ineffective, intervention. On the latter she had a duty.

“Don't worry, it's all merchants here,” she explained in a conspiratorial fashion. “It all looks fancy but it's not like when the nobility get together for their exclusive events and turn their noses up at anyone not of noble blood. You'll have fun together.”

Brilliant, trying to be nice but still sounding insulting. Thanks mother, thought Asmus.

“We might get some food actually, before the dancing starts,” Asmus said. He hoped that was enough to head away shortly. Not only was there a mission to get on with as well as not feeling entirely comfortable with this charade. It was stirring up all kinds of conflicting emotions.

He offered Kaile a warm and genuine smile. Emerald eyes lit up suddenly. “You look amazing,” he said on a whim before remembering that he had been thinking of asking her to confirm their plans. She might have felt out of place but he didn't look it.

Kaile wasn’t quite sure how to take Inara’s attempt at reassurance. It was to the Lorrdian’s advantage that at the very least she was able to discern what the Janus matron’s intentions were. She didn’t mean to offend but it inevitably came out that way.

“Of course, we will,” Kaile replied, feeling the tug of Asmus’ hand as well as the slight pressure for the pair to step away from his mother. He quickly went to food again, stomach on his mind and anxious to get his mother out of his proverbial hair.

“It was a pleasure,” it was a breathless singsong edged with that nervousness Kaile hadn’t been quite able to keep out of her voice. A voice nagged in her head that she knew better. How many years had she played different identities? The reason she’d done so was because the Lorrdian had a natural knack for it. The only difference being that for Kaile, each one of those roles had been undertaken with the world view that it would be fun to play along. It had been a game.

Kurt and Asmus had made it a little too real on the consequences that came from it. Was this Kaile the woman behind the mask or the mask in front of the woman?

Kaile felt more than saw Asmus’ attention draw back to her, so when blue tinted colored contacts drew up to meet his gaze at his compliment, Kaile couldn’t help but pause. It was the expression on his face again. The way his dark, slicked back hair framed his face, the vibrancy of those emerald eyes sweeping over her from head to toe, admiration and a bit of awe in his voice. Perhaps even a glint of surrealness in it. She was a painted image of the past through the veil of his imagination brought forth into reality. He’d told her before years past on the Quinn that he’d take her to a ball, dress her up, and they could dance the night away. As the years had passed without hide nor hair of Kaile, Asmus had come to the realization that it just wasn’t going to happen.

Yet she was here now in the flesh.

Kaile’s throat seemed to tighten, and she swallowed hard. Asmus may have said it in passing, but it still made tiny flutters in the pit of her belly.

“Thank you,” came the agent’s low murmur, lowering her lids over her eyes, a bit uncertain just how else to respond. They were at the Merchant’s ball and Kaile had a selfish wish that it wasn’t due to some Strategic Intelligence Service mission; but because she wanted to be there.

Ah, but that opens so many doors and so many questions.

Darting her head to the side so as she wouldn’t linger upon Asmus’ face too long, the Lorrdian agent gave a sweeping look across the floor. There were a number of attendees. A few were already congregating at the banquet.

“You’re hungry aren’t you?” The question hung on the air, a quick distraction. There were a few faces there that were on the list to rub elbows with. Work. They had work to do.

Never mind just how distracting Asmus appeared at her side. At least, that was what Kaile told herself.

His gaze swept downwards to break contact with hers. He too thought back to making bold declarations about dressing up and dancing years ago. It all seemed rather naive now, but it was still a desire he had kept close to his heart. There was a glimmer of embarrassment in his expression as he raised his head again and swept the room.

She would have seen that. She always picked up on the little things. What am I really embarrassed for though? He asked himself. Giving a compliment had never been difficult for him. It only took an instant to settle on the answer. They were here for work, they had serious work to do, but he was still enjoying it. Allowing himself to indulge in what had become a distant fantasy for so long.

If you're going to do two things, then do them well.

These events were always a bit of play pretend for him too. Even if most of that pretense was trying to feign interest in the merchant business. He'd already briefed Kaile in his own techniques for maintaining an alert expression during a conversation on the latest tariff change gossip. She'd laughed out loud at a face he had declared ‘nodding with interest and respect for your insight into this matter.’

He adored that they were here, outfits picked to match and looking stunning together. He still wasn't so sure about the blond, but he liked the new cut she wore. The dress flowed without being heavy, accentuated curves without being overly corseted or restrictive.

Asmus realised he had gone from an embarrassed look away to staring again and hadn't even answered her.

“I am almost always hungry,” he chuckled. “But where the food and wine is served is also where people like to stop and talk the most.”

He allowed the faces to flash across his implant display. He was slowly getting more control of it. It was interrupted by another message.

You told me to wait outside with the other droids and watch for trouble. What does trouble look like?

Asmus tried not to snort at something no one but Kaile could see beside himself.

[member="Asmus Janes"]

He’s doing it again.

Both had a slight darkening of their cheeks when they glanced away, attempting to focus on anything other than what was going on between them. Right, work.

“I can vouch for that,” Kaile would quietly say beside him. Her stint as a waitress for Yum Bunnies had been issued for exactly that reason. Food and drink make for looser tongues. There was a wealth of information the Lorrdian could glean from serving at a restaurant that was not one or two kilometers away from a military base. The younger the officers were, the more apt they were to flirt and brag. Kaile had the ability to discern when someone was telling the truth or not, and with choice words and actions, could prompt her target to divulge even more.

Of course, that’s when the words went drifting across her vision. Asmus’ attempt at trying not to snort resulting in a half choked guffaw. “You don’t even have the excuse of choking on a pastry,” Kaile added wryly, attempting to bring a more lighthearted tone to the awkward mess they’d been in.

Trouble as in an influx of First Order security or any other large movement of personnel that may look suspicious.

It was easier for Kaile to respond with a quick thought to process the relay of data over to Jay than for Asmus to do it. He was still practicing on getting it right.

“Asmus Janes!” another voice caught them on their way to the rooms where food and drink were being served. The event was busy, but not enough that they couldn't walk freely through the crowd. Asmus didn’t look for the source, nor did he seem annoyed at the interruption.

A tall and slender man made a beeline for them. Asmus grinned as he approached. Tarien had always been like the uncle he didn’t have. Back when Kairon wasn’t around the family much. Whilst his mother tried to make him presentable and his father hid at these events Tarien would inevitably cause mischief. Normally by slipping him and some of the other fourteen year olds a few drinks.

“Tarien!” Asmus laughed, “This is Abi!”

“A pleasure!” Tarien replied courteously.

“How’s the party?”

“Oh the usual, not exciting until people have drunk enough to be exciting.” Tarien turned to Kaile with a disarming grin. He was clearly in his late forties but still a handsome man with a full head of jet black hair. “You’re new so I’m sure everyone has been telling you how the merchants are not like the stuffy nobles despite being an ancient institution that hoards wealth away from the working class?”

Someone scoffed nearby and walked further away. Tarien chuckled. He wasn’t on their list, but Asmus couldn’t really excuse himself immediately without acting out of sorts.

[member="Asmus Janes"]

“You could say that,” Kaile could read just how jovial and mischievous Tarien was. To a degree, he reminded her of an older version of Asmus -- if he hadn’t decided to go wandering the galaxy for a grand adventure.

“Although I have heard that the buffet spread is divine!” small talk and conversation. Within the eye of her mind, the Lorrdian took note that Tarien wasn’t on the list for questioning, but from the way Asmus body language could be read, he wanted to spend a couple of minutes chatting.

A waiter carrying a tray of drinks and small filo dough tarts went weaving through. Remembering that Asmus was still hungry, she gave a small wave down to the man in uniform.

“I hear you’ve been working at Incom, eh?” Tarien shot the question out to Asmus, his hand coming up to brush back his thick hair. Really, what was it with these men and their hair? Did they buy all their hair products from a specific source that gave them touchable hair?

“What are you doing there now?”

Asmus moved his eyebrows as if it was juicy news. “Test pilot for some new systems. We get the interceptors before they've really calibrated all the flight computers properly so it gets a little exciting.”

“Oh I bet. Get to play with all the fun toys before they're out on the shop floor,” Tarien laughed. He stopped and turned his head to look at someone over their shoulders.

“Ah now do forgive me, very impolite to run before we'd even been introduced properly Abi but I have a quick business chat to get through.” He rolled his eyes. “I'll make some time later don't you worry. The party will kick off later I'm sure.” As he turned to depart he stopped to add: “You two look great together by the way.”

With just a pleasant parting word from the both he was gone through the crowd.

“Oh he won't be happy about having to do networking if he gets behind on drinks,” Asmus whispered to Kaile. “Ooo those look tasty,” he said before popping an entire vol-au-vent into his mouth. If there had been any thought Asmus would become an entirely different man at the formal event they were quickly dispelled.

[member="Asmus Janes"]

At that Kaile couldn't help but burst into a small chuckle. Eyes bright behind the tinted blue lenses, the Lorrdian brought her hand up to cover her mouth, the corners of her eyes crinkling in barely contained mirth. A genuine expression of the Kaile behind the mask.

"You never change," Kaile said quietly, bringing the flat of her tongue to sweep across the surface of her teeth in contemplation. From the rear of her mind, the agent thought back to the many times she'd been too weak to hold back on searching for a passing glimpse of his face. To see how he fared and if he had been happy.

Asmus, in turn, stuffed the sweetmeat into his mouth, chewing seemingly unaware of just what she meant. Perhaps it would seem just like a passing commentary. Feeling the sense to deflect, Kaile also took one of the pastries herself.

Ahead, caught in the corner of her eye, the agent caught sight of one particular face. It was Lord Valimar. She recognized him not because of the biometric scan, but due to the rather large mole that was at the center of his left cheek. It was the size of the blunt tip of a stylus. Why he hadn't had it removed perhaps was due to pride or a narcissistic sense of it being some sort of beauty mark. It certainly made him stand out. He was one of the names listed for potentially providing intelligence to the First Order.

"Guess we'll need to catch up on drinks ourselves," Kaile added, but it wasn't in the tone of voice that his Kaile would say. No, it was Abi again. A slight incline of a head towards the direction of the Lord would be enough.

[member="Kaileann Vera"]

A short while later and Asmus had his third drink in hand. All part of playing the role of himself. Something that was turning out to be more difficult than he had expected. At every second he was aware of what he was doing and saying, trying to consciously compare it to some mental baseline of himself. The trouble was he didn't think about who he was, he just was. It was like being a teenager again and fretting over everything he wore but on a wider scale. He had a new appreciation of how exhausting her work must have been.

The third drink was in fact a virgin cocktail. Only the first one had been real. Kaile had confirmed that Lord Valimar hadn't given her much. His views were rather well aligned to the First Order, but there was nothing to suggest he was really working with them. He had still managed to make Asmus' skin crawl.

"Can't see anyone else we might want to talk to," Asmus said. His empty glass was placed deftly on a passing tray. The reflexes of a pilot could apparently take a drink or snack from a passing tray seen only in his periphery. "But maybe we'll spot someone from the dance floor."

It was a weak excuse and he knew it. His lopsided grin challenged her to come out with an excuse not to dance.

[member="Asmus Janes"]

A blonde tinted eyebrow drew up at Asmus' direction, catching the rascal grin and seemingly kathpup innocent eyes. It was a weak excuse, as they both knew it. It would be a lie to say that Kaile had been looking forward to such an event. Why the last time they danced it was back on the Quinn...

Her throat gave a bob and she took a breath. "Guess that depends on if there is a tune to dance to." well, this whole experience was new for her. They danced the waltz once. This particular tone wasn't anything like that. Both a blessing and a nagging thought.

"You know these places more than I do..." Kaile began, drinking from her fluke a bit of bubbly. This was her second drink, but the woman was able to handle her liquor a little better. The waitress tricks of being able to seem as if she was accepting drinks and actually drinking them would assist to make sure she didn't completely lose her head. This was a job after all.

Even if she kept having to tell herself about it.

[member="Kaileann Vera"]

He took her hand with an enthusiastic grip and pulled her along behind him. Through the crowd he took her and up a narrow staircase. The music grew in volume as they climbed until they emerged on a balcony that ran above the main dance floor.

It certainly wasn't a waltz. There was little grace and precision on show. The crowd was a swirling maelstrom of colours that bobbed to the vibrant tempo played out by the band. Partners twirled each other and and stepped from side to side. When the tempo changed they switched partners.

Asmus led her on and down the wide, open stairs to the floor.

"Follow along, this one is easy! But don't stay dancing with anyone handsome for long because I will get terribly jealous."

He laughed and turned to face her. Time seemed to slow for just a breath. He saw her thinking about letting herself enjoy this. What would it take? He wondered. Or what would I have to become to make you stay this time?

[member="Asmus Janes"]

One. Two. Three.

No, not quite the same step. There was a rush to this. A quicker step. The blood seemed to pump through her veins. There was a whirl of skirts, Kaile could feel the fabric tickle her legs. Was it wrong to let his words excite her so? To look up at him as the Lorrdian brought her hand onto his.

Was it okay to enjoy herself? To dream?

As a Lorrdian, it was easy to fall into the beat. To let the music fill her. One. Two.

Within the next step, Asmus swung her to the right. Kaile could feel the brush of her hair tickle her cheek, and then she took a breath. Within her lungs she could smell the scent of his cologne.

Maybe, just a little, she thought to herself.

Enjoy it just a little.

She was a spy, a Force user and a mind reader. An expert and blending in and not being noticed. But he saw her. The right look and he could bring a blush to her cheeks. She wasn't used to it. He could see the trepidation with which she approached the very concept of enjoying herself. It brought a wide smile to his face. He took her hands a swirled her round.

A change in pace from the band and they had to switch partners. Asmus had made his comment to try and amuse Kaile and help her relax. He knew jealousy was an ugly emotion. But now someone else was getting to see beginning to genuinely enjoy herself. To take her by the waist and lift her high.

Asmus didn't recognise the skinny girl with jet black hair he ended up with. She was probably too young for him to know her name. He smiled politely but his gaze sought out Kaile through the twirling crowd.
