PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Integrates permanently with the user's biology
  • Dampens Force potential
  • Provides a number of physical benefits
STRENGTHS
  • More Than Human: The substance greatly increases its user's resistance to age, disease, and poison, and provides a moderate regenerative factor.
WEAKNESSES
  • Decreased Potential: The substance's Helixium lacing does render it difficult to remove or disable, but also dampens the user's own Force potential. While not cut off completely, the serum prevents them from achieving their full possible capabilities.
DESCRIPTION

As a rule, Helix's creations are not for sale. The organization is not in the business of mass-market sales (with a couple of exceptions), creating most of its nightmarish and arcane technologies for in-house use alone.

This singular jealousness towards their technology can be averted, of course, for those in the know. Influential clients, personal friends of the organization, or simply those with far more money than sense have all managed to walk out with strange, wondrous devices in tow. Most of these personages have simply convinced the company to part with one or two items; a few have even managed to get items commissioned for their own use.

So it is with the so-called Serum 23 (as it will be hereafter referred to). An as-yet-anonymous individual has managed to entreat the organization for a personalized life-extension treatment. Chemical science is not unknown to the organization; several substances with dramatic effects on their imbibers have been produced already. Nor is nanotechnology a mystery to the Privateers: their founder and absolute ruler consists entirely of such devices.

The treatment primarily consists of a myriad of self-replicating nanodroids floating within a sterile fluid. Other ingredients include Helcyte venom and microscopic quantities of Helsteel and the staggeringly-rare Helixium in the nanites themselves. These serve to soothe the subject's immune system (preventing potentially fatal allergic reactions) and prevent the nanites from being easily disabled with mechu-deru/ionic interference, respectively.

Serum 23's effects are manifold, and not all of them are beneficial. The individual pays a steep price for their renewed bounty.

Serum 23 is tailored exactly to the intended user's structure, down to the molecular level, and its potential effects on other lifeforms are unknown.

Firstly, the serum acts to reverse the effects of ageing. It is estimated that the treated individual will experience only one year of the typical humanoid ageing process for every fifteen standard years that pass. This can provide a maximum realistic age of some 1.3-1.5 thousand years, provided all goes well, with the subject retaining full youthful vigor during most of this period.

Secondly, the serum provides significantly improved wound healing, though not enough to immediately save the subject from normally-fatal injuries. Given time, the subject should even be able to regrow lost limbs, albeit very painfully and over the span of months.

Thirdly, the serum renders the user highly resistant to most diseases, poisons, and harmful chemicals. The tiny machines that permeate their tissue can seek out and destroy toxic substances, foreign bodies, or other unwanted contaminants with ease. This can render the user capable of breathing even in toxic environments, albeit only temporarily. Long-term respiration of toxic fumes can still cause damage, as the machines can struggle to purge the contaminants quickly enough.

The side effects are numerous, and not especially well-understood or catalogued. The subject is known to be Force-sensitive, and the presence of the Helixium-nanite serum within their tissue permanently hampers this sensitivity, as is renders them (in effect) a variety of cyborg. While they can still utilize their abilities, they will never quite be able to reach to the height of their natural potential. The subject was informed of this risk, and found it acceptable.

Occasional bouts of mild illness or headaches may ironically materialize, as the body adjusts to a radically-altered chemical structure.

Needless to say, long-term ramifications are completely unstudied, and further, as-yet-unforeseen complications may arise in the future.

A hypothetical removal would be difficult, time-consuming, expensive, and most certainly painful. As the nanodroids eventually spread to almost all of the body's tissues, a similarly-pervasive chemical or nanotech antidote of some sort would be the best course.

Purging the machines would take time, but eventually, the subject should make a full recovery.

Helix Helix

Very cool! My only problem is that you don't describe how someone who doesn't want to be included can defend against it? How can a player fight it, what can they do to prevent changes from happening, etc. Please add the weaknesses to this, and also write an example of how to remove/neutralize it.

MANIAC MANIAC

Apologies, I'll admit I didn't really think about removal since this is a single-use unique item designed for a future PC/NPC of my own making.

Added a bit towards the bottom of the sub detailing some of what a possible antidote would look like. If more is needed, please let me know and I will correct it ASAP.
