BIG Z1776
Baboon with a MAAWS
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
A weapon designed as the go-to ship-mounted turret as well as a space-station and ground-defense turret for the Crossroads Republic Fleet and Crossroads Republic Army's defensive facilities to replace the J-28 Medium Proton Cannon Turret in all respects. Unlike the replacement process of the J-44 Heavy Electromagnetic Plasma Cannon Turret's replacement of the J-32 Heavy Proton Cannon Turret the J-43 is a from-the-ground-up design which utilizes none of the components of the J-28. This means that instead of retrofitted components or housings this turret is brand-new, possessing few, if any similarities to its predecessor. In terms of its firepower this weapon is more powerful and longer-ranged than its predecessor, lending new credence to the Crossroads Republic's doctrinal emphasis on long-range firepower able to slug it out with ships of higher weight classes. Thanks to the unique Umbaran-sourced technology developed over the centuries this weapon can provide a Crossroads frigate the ability to go toe-to-toe with an enemy cruiser if handled correctly in battle. And for ground-side facilities armed with these guns, there is now a good chance that, when armed with several batteries of these weapons, the facility can hold its own until help arrives or its enemies are beaten back.

- A boxy turret with twin guns kept firing by three capacitors per barrel and two reactors below the turret.
- Does not need to have crewmen inside the turret itself in order to function.
- Designed to be capable of successfully engaging cruisers, frigates, and corvettes and smaller ships as well as massed volley fire against fighters.
- Can be set to an auto-firing mode to fire on ships or firing explosive air-burst round proton rounds at smaller craft.
- Fast-tracking turret mechanics, powerful traverse and elevation mechanism.
- Small dome on the top of the turret possesses a single powerful fire-control sensor for tracking fighters which activates on command when in point-defense mode.
- The long barrels of the weapons accelerate the projectile to a speed of 22 Kilometers per Second.
- Powerful weapon system, can rather easily engage cruisers and frigates with its powerful and fast projectiles.
- Rapid rate of fire so long as the barrel is cooled.
- Can fire airburst shells which sends ionized plasma into its target like shrapnel close ranges, and at the furthest shrapnel arc the plasma solidifies in shards.
- Rapid traverse and elevate rate of the weapon system, can track fighters at medium-close ranges.
- Very accurate due the powerful sensor on top of the turret providing real-time sensor feeds to both its own fire control system and the larger ship-borne system that controls all weapons.
- Turret is rather large and heavy, requires a dedicated repair and maintenance facility in order to effect extensive repairs, which are what are usually required, any damage is usually major.
- Can't engage fighters very accurately from close range.
- The twin reactors are vulnerable to damage and if they are damaged the weapons will cease to function.
- Has to limit its rate of fire or else it risks melting its barrel components.
- Its projectiles cannot be guided like many other kinds of electromagnetic plasma cannon weapons.
