The Crossroads Defense Industries is a government manufacturing group whose entire purpose is to insure that the Crossroads Republic Armed Forces is domestically armed, equipped, and supplied. However, due to the fact that this is not a private for-profit company, talented designers are hard to come by, and CDI is often required to bring in outside designers to do the design work and awards contracts for licensed manufacturing to the winners of these competitions. CDI then negotiates and implements the licensed manufacturing, often with CDI paying contractors to oversee the production at military plants and shipyards, staffed by civilians on the military's payroll. These contractors are then usually hired on am on-loan sort of setup, and production commences. CDI products are entirely manufactured and assembled at Crossroads Prime and its colonies. Designers are usually then poached from their parent companies, and they continue their work for the Crossroads Defense Industries.
Although material sourcing is widespread and often is done as part of some contracts with some of the design companies' favored mining or material suppliers. As part of its manufacturing process CDI never has an "all-eggs-in-one-basket" setup with its factories and shipyards and all manufacturing and refit facilities are treated as strategic assets and are jealously guarded.
RATIONALE
Crossroads Defense Industries has been a part of the Crossroads Republic Armed Forces ever since the world Crossroads became independent and was no longer able to have military vehicles, weapons, and warships delivered from its colonial homeworlds due to political tensions and an embargo on such items from the Core. But CDI was a clever and in the early days desperate organization, which managed to keep the CRAF equipped with black market weapons and ships until tensions simmered down. This resourcefulness and utility-geared doctrines allowed CDI to become quite successful at its government-mandated task of keeping the military equipped and supplied. The reason it is a government entity rather than a private one is that the government does not trust military industry to keep the interests of Crossroads before its own. As such, Crossroads Defense Industries has a government-mandated monopoly on providing military goods to the Crossroads Republic Armed Forces.
