Caldera

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATIONSETTING INFORMATION
  • City Name: Caldera
  • Classification: Isolated Colony
  • Location: Thyferra
  • Affiliation: Technically independent, nominally under the control of Vanessa Vantai, and as such, the Sith Empire.
  • Demographics: The majority of the population in Caldera consists of humans and near-humans from the Sith Empire who were offered large swaths of fertile land in exchange for coming to the planet as colonists. It is estimated that the population of Vratix in the city is in the single digits - it is almost entirely filled with foreign born citizens. Within the city's reservoir are a small colony of Seiarenei.
  • Wealth: Medium-Low. The average wealth of citizens in Caldera varies, with some truly functioning as upper-middle class thanks to money gained in deals off-planet prior to moving to the world, while many of the survivors of the Sith bombardment lost effectively everything, becoming the city's poorest residents.
  • Stability: Medium-High. The majority of citizens are pleased with the attempts to terraform and otherwise render habitable again a planet whose desolate and empty surface gives them great opportunities. Local police forces, predominantly comprised of former Sith soldiers, keep the locals inline, but there are occasional protests from disgruntled Vratix who look at the new colonists as an invasion force taking their home away.
  • Description: Caldera's name is a misnomer - instead of being built around and in the collapsed carcass of a volcano, Caldera was built as a colony around a notably large impact crater from the orbital bombardment of the Sith on the planet. The inhabitants believe it to be the first turbolaser strike on the world. Caldera as a city predominantly consists of several massive Tryton-class Cargo Containers set around the ruins of an Alazhi manufacturing plant at the rim of the crater, as well as a landing pad system for ships of up to cruiser size. There is a crude armored hovertrain system that leads from the city into the crater itself, to the ash mines, as well as the reservoir.
POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Landing Pads
    There are several landing pads built of several layers of durasteel mesh overlaid with Thyferran concrete, capable of fitting individual ships up to a single 2km long vessel. More often than not, however, the landing pads fit multiple freighters or transports instead, bringing supplies to the colony in question.
  • Metropolitan District
    The majority of shops in Caldera are located within one of the Tryton-class cargo containers, which has had its entire interior turned into a multi-level shopping center. A variety of foodstuffs, trinkets, equipment, weapons, and armor can be purchased here, much of DCMM make, though many companies' items are found for sale here.
  • Alazhi Plant #42
    Originally a manufacturing plant for alazhi, one of the main components of bacta, the plant survived several near-misses from the turbolasers with extensive damage done to the building's interior and exterior. The factory is likely damaged beyond repair, with scorched machinery, a caved-in roof, and a partially collapsed second floor. Initial scavenging teams from Defiance's initial expedition to the planet recovered what little good xoorzi fungus remained and transported it to Sith forces, who took custody of it and have been storing it within the city. There are rumors of monsters formed from ash haunting the building, and the ruins have been quarantined indefinitely to prevent the potential deaths of any untrained scavenger parties looking to salvage what remains.
  • The Mound
    The Mound is a DCMM factory located mostly underneath a large mound of Thyferran ash that is constantly being jostled by sonic rumblers and repulsor fields. The most prominent portion of the factory visible to the public is the large tower which is consistently struck by lightning from the disrupted atmosphere of the world. The energy from the planet's atmosphere is transferred through extremely high-gauge cables into machinery within the factory, energizing shipments of crystals delivered from offworld and creating energy crystals. These energy crystals are then shipped to other DCMM manufacturing facilities for use in the company's beam cannons.
  • The Lifeless Laboratory
    Behind a wall in the lower levels of the Mound is a tube leading down several hundred feet to a simple laboratory beneath the the building. Sith trinkets adorn the walls and torches light the concrete-walled area. The laboratory is fit for people to live in, with two bathrooms, four bedrooms - one larger than the others, and two with bunk beds - a basic workbench, and standard alchemical tools, along with a connection to the holonet. The trio of Healing Pools are located near the entrance. The Lifeless Laboratory is a place used by Vanessa to research potential alchemical uses of energy crystals for the Sith. In the event that Vanessa is present on the planet when someone attempts to orbitally bombard the world, the laboratory can also serve as an effective fallout bunker, having been excavated deep enough to survive turbolaser bombardment even if the factory above it is penetrated.
  • The Healing Pools
    Within the Lifeless Laboratory's main room are a trio of pools containing kolcta - made from kolto purchased on the Sith market mixed with the last dregs of unspoiled bacta on the planet that weren't completely annihilated by the orbital bombardment. These healing pools are used by Vanessa to help the healing process of alchemical experiments, and to heal any serious wounds inflicted on her as well. They are covered by a particle shield when not in use to prevent atmospheric decontamination and decay of such a precious substance - the shield can be deactivated by stepping on a pressure plate in the steps leading down into them. They are concrete-wailed and each have a glowing red light at the bottom of them for ambience.
  • The Water Towers
    Caldera has three water towers - one large primary one and two secondary ones. An underground pipeline transports water from the reservoir at the bottom of the crater up to the water towers, which are connected to the cargo containers and regularly provide the city's citizenry with fresh drinking water. A multi-tier filtration system prevents bacteria or any other foreign contaminants from the reservoir from polluting the towers.
  • The Hovertrain
    The hovertrain connects the city with the ash mine near the bottom of the crater. It's a standard three car hovertrain, the middle car armed to deal with any potential threats as they come. This hovertrain transports miners daily from their homes to their place of work, and back at the evening time.
  • Ash Mine Aurek
    Ash Mine Aurek is a large-scale strip mine located near the bottom of the crater. Dredging tools, front end loaders, and other diggers are used to acquire large amounts of the ash formed within the crater, to be sent off-world in freighters and used as aggregate for cement. A small amount of the material is also used by local settlements for building. The mine is mostly staffed by humans and near-humans, with a decent amount of Vratix as well. The mine is maintained - as well as defended - by several FXR Multipurpose Droids armed with sonic weaponry, used to disrupt any of the rumored ash constructs, though fleshy miners are responsible for any actual mining that goes on. A droid designated "Fixer One" is the head of the bunch, reporting directly to the mining foreman, Sercoma Tejit. Some miners have occasionally gone missing, only to be recovered later, and the accident/death rate of this mine is extremely low - likely due to the ash having already collapsed where it was weak.
  • The Siren's Reservoir
    The Siren's Reservoir is the name given by citizens of Caldera to the reservoir, a small lake of water located next to Ash Mine Aurek. The reservoir provides fresh drinking water to the colonists, and is regularly refilled by shipments of water delivered from off-world by DCMM freighters. The reservoir, however, hides a dark secret - at the bottom of the lake is a small colony of Seiarenei - predatory, mermaid-like creatures that occasionally snare wayward miners, seducing them into the water before spitting them out once they have been used as mates. The colony of Seiarenei grows very slowly - they are able to sustain themselves off of seaweed and algal bloom that grows on the walls of the reservoir, along with fish that have been used to salt the aquaculture of the reservoir. The people in the town know nothing about the sirens, and they are regarded as nothing more than a myth by most of the population.
  • The Hanging Gardens
    A source of significant produce, the Hanging Gardens are a series of plots totaling almost a square kilometer in length. These plots utilize the extremely nutritious ash as a means of growing a variety of produce, whose samples have been brought in from around the galaxy. Small-scale automated farming of the Hanging Gardens provides fresh fruit and vegetables to Caldera's citizens as well as plenty of high-quality exported food. The Hanging Gardens themselves are meant to serve as a test platform for potential large-scale agricultural usage of the ruined planet, an alternative to using the powdered shell of ash outside its crust as construction material. Food is after all a valuable commodity, and can be properly cultivated without large amounts of direct human involvement.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Caldera was formed in ashes. When the Sith orbitally bombarded the world, reducing its population and its sole industry of note to charred cinders, many believed that the world was a dead wasteland, a place to be actively shunned and ignored. But Vanessa Vantai believed that the eradication of the locals, coupled with a planet full of aggregate for use in building structures on other worlds and a fertile landscape filled with ash, provided a significant building opportunity and a chance to test small-scale terraforming techniques. Thus the city of Caldera was created, the capital of Thyferra - by virtue of it being the first and largest of any colony site planted on the world. Caldera grew quickly due to the use of preexisting technology used to establish it. Caldera is for the most part overseen by Defiance Consolidated Multipurpose Manufacturing, and given Vanessa Vantai's effective control of the town, one might consider it a Sith city. That said, it is outside Sith territorial space and is not actively sustained through many lines of trade - only a few, as are other settlements on the world. Vanessa intends to use Caldera as a means of prototyping terraforming on a larger scale, in order to begin returning the planet back to a truly habitable and self-sustaining world instead of the hellish, ash-ridden wasteland it has become.
[member="Vanessa Vantai"] Everything looks fab -- I love the effort put into the places of interest --- I just need one thing from you, and that's that you need to have the Sith Empire linked under affiliation. A link to the faction page will do :D
