PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
STRENGTHS
  • Powerful, Varied, Self-modulating Encryption: The Utrel'a'nayr has a number of powerful, varied encryption methods, making it's communications even if intercepted extremely difficult to decipher.
  • Boosted Signal: The Hiridiu Crystal enhanced Chatterbox component allows for a greatly increased communications range.
  • Real-time Translation: The Tran Lang III Communications module is powerful enough to provide real time translations.
  • Versatile: The varied suite of communications systems integrated into the system ensure that there is virtually no function that the user could want for, including a gravitic pulse coder and Locke and Key's revolutionary Harmonia system that allows the interception and utilization of telepathic communications.
  • Communications Monitoring/Interception: The Utrel'a'nayr features multiple communications monitoring/interception systems, boosting the ELINT capabilities of the craft that make use of it, and greatly reducing the need for dedicated ELINT craft.
  • Resilient: The Utrel'a'nayr is designed to function in combat conditions and as such is resilient in the face of many damage sources that it could face on the battlefield.
  • Secure: The Utrel'a'nayr's security suite is decidedly powerful, allowing it to not only resist attacks but go on the offensive with both a holotrace and echo pulse function.
WEAKNESSES
  • Two Ways: The security of the comms suite is only as good as the unit on the other end. If the other comms unit lacks decryption capabilities, then sending an encrypted message would be entirely useless.
  • Jamming: Theoretically it is possible (though not plausible) to jam out all conventional communications technologies the Utrel'a'nayr uses, though naturally this will likely prevent those behind the jamming from using those frequencies/channels as well.
  • Not All Comm Units Are Equal: If the other comm unit doesn't have equivalent frequency hopping or encryption capabilities then the whole system is that much less secure.
  • In the Network: Slicers with access to one Utrel'a'nayr system already connected to another, will be more easily able to access the other thanks to the auto-negotiating function.
  • Slicers: Should slicers actually manage to slice into the system, they can quite easily wreak all manner of havoc, not to mention the implications of gaining access to either an encryption key or decrypted comms data.
  • One Way (Ghostwave): The unfortunate truth about the Ghostwave is that it is one way, and that there is usually a reasonably long delay as the message makes its way to its intended recipient.
  • EMP/Ion: Communications equipment usually experience some signal degradation when exposed to EMP and Ion weapons, and if the weapons are powerful enough to punch through the protective measures of the comms suite, then the damage done has a high chance of being irreparable due to the sensitive components, or in the very least, lasting.
DESCRIPTION
"Surrender, Mandalorian. Your communications have been jammed! No one's coming!"
"Oh? Have they?"
- Pirate Fleet Captain and Strill Securities Patrol Corvette, moments before the former's demise.
The Utrel'a'nayr was designed from the ground up to service the needs of security contractors, mercenaries, bounty hunters and other similarly employed professionals but is built to military standards, with military-grade security and encryption. The primary focus in the Utrel'a'nayr's design is versatility. The company wanted their suite to be able to communicate using virtually any standard and in virtually any condition. For that reason, in addition to the usual suite of communications, a gravitic pulse coder and Locke and Key's highly advanced, highly innovative Harmonia system were both included. This versatility also functions as redundancy, giving formations plenty of protocols and means to fallback should one be unsuitable for any reason. To this end, a backup encoded PTP link and laser-flash signaller system was included should every other option cease to be viable.
There is a great degree of communications however that do no necessarily involve individuals speaking to another. This includes but is not limited to target designation and marking, IFF systems, telesponder with configurable ID profiles, configurable ID overlay and a distress signal. On ships large enough, a vidscreen equipped intercom system is fitted. This suite covers the vast array of utility functions that are usually filled by the usually standalone devices, making operating the entire array occasionally troublesome, however unifies them under a singular interface.
The Utrel'a'nayr is designed with communications security in mind. When connected to compatible systems, the communication suite is an auto-negotiating, frequency hopping system with a self-modulating encryption key, making it extremely resistant to jamming and interception. The comm-lasers can mimic this by rapidly shifting their broadcast spectrum. It is theoretically possible (though not plausible) to jam out all conventional communications technologies the Utrel'a'nayr uses, though naturally this will likely prevent those behind the jamming from using those frequencies/channels as well. Additionally, if the comm suite that the Utrel'a'nayr is attempting to communicate doesn't have equivalent frequency hopping or encryption capabilities then the whole system is that much less secure.
The Utrel'a'nayr's encryption suite is extensive, featuring a number of measures for both encrypting and decrypting communications packets. The Ghostwave method and Fixed-signature tracker allows the use of the Holonet as a transmission medium without much concern for interception, however the Ghostwave method is unfortunately only useful for one-way communications and is also prone to delays. Additionally, an ion scrambler ensures that the efforts of those attempting to triangulate the location of the transmitting ship are greatly disrupted.
To further this, the suite has an extensive suite of defensive measures against slicers, allowing it to not only resist attacks but go on the offensive with both a holotrace and echo pulse function. Should slicers actually manage to slice into the system, they can quite easily wreak all manner of havoc, not to mention the implications of gaining access to either an encryption key or decrypted comms data. Though it is for this reason that a failsafe ion charge is included.
Rather than stop there, the company included a number of further utility features. To ensure that signal degradation due to range is kept to a minimum, a Hiridiu crystal enhanced communications booster has been included. This has the notable effect of further increasing ground-orbit connectivity, which can be further enhanced on frigate and larger vessels with the inclusion of a orbital relay satellite bay. Finally, given that it was made for security contractors, mercenaries, bounty hunters and the like, it features a real-time translation module and a false voice transmitter, allowing anonymous conversation in any language.
