OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create a countermeasure launcher emplacement for use on installations and ships for Breshig War Forge Consolidated, Strill Securities and select others.

  • Primary Source: Araniik-class Point-defense System.
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
STRENGTHS
  • 'Manda' Tactical Battlenet Compatibility: The turrets extend the ship/installation's sensor net and provide more data such that the Manda's ability to coordinate weapons fire is only made more effective. Additionally, the system treats CL-02 launchers in range of each other as part of a battery, allowing for better target prioritization and engaging of said priority targets.
  • Fast-track: The CL-02 has the capability to track various classes of ordnance, and can just as rapidly loose countermeasures to deal with them.
  • Powerful and Comprehensive Sensor Suite: The CL-02's powerful and comprehensive sensor suite not only allows it to track even some of the most elusive ordnance, but also extends the mounting platform's sensor range.
  • Resilient: The CL-02 is well-protected against a variety of damage that it might face on the battlefield, even given that it could quickly become a target for attacking forces given it's purpose, and that it's design has led to it being confused as an ordnance launcher.
  • Countermeasure Array: The CL-02 packs a number of countermeasures that are suited for dealing with a wide variety of threats, from tractor beams to energy weapon barrages to missiles.
WEAKNESSES
  • Data Parsing: The additional sensor data means that there's more data for targeting suites to parse. In the case of platforms equipped with the 'Manda' tactical battlenet, this is usually not a problem, but can lead to buffer overloads.
  • Limited Supplies: Each launcher and the ammunition stores of their mounting platforms can only hold a limited amount of countermeasures, as such without resupply between engagements the launchers can and will run out of countermeasures.
  • Terminal Phase: There's very little that any of the various countermeasures used by the launcher can do to ordnance in the terminal phase.
  • Stage Three Torpedo: The stage three torpedo's blast doesn't distinguish between friendly and hostile tractor beams, and careful targeting and deployment is not always enough to avoid inadvertent disruption of friendly tractor beams.
  • Chaff: Like stage three torpedoes, chaff does not distinguish between friendly and hostile sensor suits and ordnance.
  • Starfighters: Starfighters can get in close and let their ordnance loose, making it difficult for the CL-02 to engage ordnance launched by them.
DESCRIPTION
"It's not just a countermeasure system. Used carefully and skillfully, a CL-02 will give you more options than you thought you had."
-Strill Securities Fleet Admiral Nyles Kote
The CL-02 was designed to function as an automated countermeasure launcher with possibility for manual override. To accomplish this, the company used the system sensor systems and turret servos from their Araniik point-defense emplacement, giving it a powerful an advanced sensor suite and fast-track capabilities which were all the better to counter enemy weapon systems with. Additionally, like the Araniik, the CL-02 featured Manda tactical battlenet compatibility, further extending it's mounting platform's sensor net, enhancing the Manda's ability to coordinate weapons fire and enabled the Manda to better direct the CL-02 to counter enemy weapon systems. Additionally, like the Araniik, the CL-02 launchers are capable of networking with one another to prevent excess or inadequate deployment of countermeasures.
The CL-02's manual override feature put a wide variety of options in starship commander's hands in particular, with manual deployment of Dha Werda countermeasure gas rockets and stage three torpedoes allowing for particularly symbiotic teamwork tactics between friendly vessels. Additionally, it is a popular tactic to use the nagnol gas equipped countermeasure gas rockets not only defensively, but as a means to increase the lethality of unguided ordnance, and many a starship captain have learned the hard way, much to their chagrin, that the anti-laser/dampener aerosol rockets are not a solely defensive weapon.
With additional data, however, comes the additional risk of targeting system overload or the rare case of buffer overload as far as the Manda tactical battlenet modules are concerned. Additionally, given the nature of missiles, there is not much the CL-02 can do to stop a missile in its terminal phase. A further shortcoming is that certain countermeasures such as chaff and stage three torpedoes don't discriminate between friendly and hostile targets. Starfighters, unfortunately, should they be able to get in close, can deploy ordnance with a minimal chance of them being countered by the CL-02. Finally, once out of countermeasures, the CL-02 provides no additional benefit beyond it's sensor suite till it can be reloaded.
