The Axiom-class Command Cruiser is a frigate, not a cruiser, or so some would claim. Globex disagrees. The official reason is its role as a command ship, its ability to operate independently (albeit usually in a communications or espionage capacity - something to command is pretty important for a command ship), and its cruiser-grade reactor. The unofficial reason is that test audiences responded poorly to 'command frigate'.
Despite classificational issues, it is an undeniably capable craft able to excel in its niche.
While no Axiom will ever achieve dashing victories on the field of war or heroically soar to the rescue of beleaguered innocents, they do an excellent job of facilitating such heroism from behind the scenes. Or, in the case of Globex's own Axioms, moving about fleets of automated ships.
In addition to serving as command or communications ships, some see service as espionage platforms or serve in customs fleets - a few Axioms may well prove more valuable than a comparable number of Star Destroyers if you are more worried about sneaky smugglers than invasions.
