Faction Always Be Prepared [Training] [SJC]

The trail had been long, and tiring. She'd almost forgotten that Mathieu commended her on being prepared, it didn't feel like it amounted to much. On the bright side, she wasn't parched, as she should have been. Able to off set her sporadic water intake with the Force. Indeed it was a powerful ally, every day she remembered, and learned how powerful it really was. The glue of their lives, in a way. Once he said midday camp, she could've collapsed, giving him a side glance, and moving to her knees for a bit. As he had observed his surroundings, so did she. She was already on high alert for Wyyyyschokk's, so those glimmering spiderwebs in the other side of the clearing were clear indicators there wasn't anything over there for her.

After taking some time to recuperate, and group up. She regarded the group with interest. It made sense to pair with someone she hadn't yet, there were plenty to pick from, but maybe she shouldn't have been the one picking.
"Alright, who wants to go foraging? Anywhere but Wyyyschokk alley" Aayla pointed to the trees with a clear abundance of webbing that seemed to encase the upper area of some trees. In actuality, even being this close could be potentially dangerous, but there was some water in between, and no obvious way to cross. Not readily visible anyway.

“The surrounding hundred yards or so should be safe for foraging. Pair off and gather anything you think safe to eat
— nuts, seeds, roots, fruits, flowers. Bring me anything you find. I’ll inspect it and make sure it’s safe to eat.”

Caedyn returned Risen Risen 's nod with a smile and then turned to study the students as the Jedi Knight had disclosed further instructions. Having spent so many years training with the Je'daii before coming to the Silvers, Caedyn's mastery of Stav Kesh had aided in their hike thus far, his discipline of body and mind having led to his future years as a Jedi maintaining the best physical routines he could to continue to keep up with his former practices; Being of great physical shape and over-all fitness, he felt in rather good condition given how far they had traversed. Though this was also a boon that any of the students were capable of obtaining after so many years of experience like he and Risen Rathe.

"Alright, who wants to go foraging? Anywhere but Wyyyschokk alley"
Caedyn looked to Aayla Shan Aayla Shan , the first to call for the company in their new objective; "I'm on hand if any of you need me" he advised, yet felt they would be better served pairing up with fellow students. Between all of them, Caedyn was just as happy to observe, keeping tabs on them through his sensory skill, and otherwise helping Risen in whatever he might need or wish for the Jedi Knight to do.

On him: Backpack

Jasper did not want to show it, he felt it should not show it, he knew he could not show it, but unfortunately for Jasper, he was about to show it for what he felt was the first time since this lesson began:

Weakness

And Jasper was about to show it in the form of gasping for air. He had no choice but breath harder through few breathings in and out via his nose, hoping that no one had noticed, he had wondered when the group was going to stop, either take a break or make camp and set up for the night, at the beginning of the trip but now that he was breathing more than before the trip begins to take a toll of his stamina, the question of when they were going to was now constant in his mind as he considered going to the teacher that was going to teach them survival and asking him he could stop and at least take a break. That worried him and would have to the core if was not for the low stamina being a bigger concern to him. That, and the possible consequences that he would have to deal with the other members of the group and whether they will take kindly to his request. When he wondered about them after thinking about his choices, his thoughts transition into how the other was able to keep up for this long.

He could not go any further into these questions and thoughts as Risen finally made a stop. The second that Risen said that would make camp here Jasper felt relieved that the hike was over but did not do anything else, not drop his backpack or took a seat on the ground. He did not like sitting on the ground without something under him to prevent dirt or germs from contacting him, but he was going to make an exception considering the state that he was in.

When the rest of the group started to go their separate ways, Jasper went on his own. Making sure nobody went to where he was going by waiting for everyone to make their move. He did not want to unpack for fear of losing his stuff, so he took it with him. He knew that Risen wanted him to pair up, but he did not want people to see what he was going to do next.

Taking deep breaths after dropping his bag to the group to recover his stamina. Pulling into his bag he grabbed one of his bottles of water and began to drink from it before putting it back into his bag. He knew he would have to ration them in order to make it through this lesson.

How rude! While Mathieu had tried to be kind to Kuxirra, she did not seem to respond to him - at all. It was a surprising behaviour, seeing as she had given him a completely different impression until now. But then, maybe she was just tired of people bothering her about the ankle. It was confusing indeed - for to him, it seemed like something anyone would ask her about. Regardless, he had made the offer and not made any moves to indicate that it was withdrawn. If she wanted his aid, she would have it.

Before long, the group came to a halt as Risen determined the location at which they would camp for the time being. It looked like a fine location. The dampened sound of water suggested that a creek may be nearby and the high amount of low shrubbery meant that berries might also be found in the vicinity. While Mathieu did not tire very easily, he did feel a bit concerned that hunger might get to him, for while berries could be tasty, they were hardly of enough substance to sate his appetite.

Soon, Aayla and Kuxirra walked off towards one direction, upon being given the instructions to pair off with another Padawan. Mathieu, looked to the other Knight who had offered help to those who would need it. Walking up to him, the large Morellian couldn't help but to let a few awkward moments of silence pass before he spoke "So, if we aren't supposed to use our lightsabres unless Risen says so, how are we supposed to defend ourselves if something were to happen?" he asked, making sure to speak loudly enough so that anyone nearby could overhear him - the last thing he wanted was for it to appear as if he went behind one Knights back to get permission from another.

By the time his talk with Caedyn was over, Jasper had already disappeared. Starting to move in another direction than Aayla and Kuxirra had taken, Mathieu ventured out alone, allowing the force to guide where he went. Perhaps he used more instinct and experience than he cared to admit, but at least he was trying to let go of that and instead rely on the force solely. Whether it was the force or not was hard to tell, but eventually, he stumbled upon a familiar face. "Jasper" he said, keeping a cheerful tone as he approached the other Padawan. "I'm glad that I caught up. Going out alone is far less pleasant, don't you think? Not to mention that it's less safe" he didn't carry a hint of blame in his voice - but just as he finished the sentence, his gaze were drawn to something else.

A fair distance away, movement could be seen among the shrubbery. "Look at that" he whispered, crouching down and pointing to the creatures in the distance. "Those look like Jykkle Vultures, don't they?" Mathieu continued to observe them with interest before looking to his fellow Padawan with a smile "They must have found a meal, want to come have a look?" Not knowing how familiar Jasper was with the creatures, he let out an interested "Don't worry. They tend to be pretty harmless, the vultures" before starting to move towards them.

Once closer, the carcass of a small Mouf could be seen among the bushes. "Doesn't look very old. I wonder what took it down" he said, apparently a little too loud as the Jykkle Vultures seemed to have been frightened by the presence of the Jedi and quickly scurried away. After some further studying, a few bitemarks could be spotted by its hindlegs neck and throat along with scratches by its back "What do you think?" he asked, looking to Jasper before pointing to the bite marks "Looks like it had large teeth. Maybe a Sathog"

At this point, reaching out to the others was probably the best course of action since the risk of a predator being nearby was high. Mathieu looked back towards the camp - they had ventured a fair distance from it by now. Instead of hollering for Risen across the forest, he reached out to him through the force, having experienced it first hand during his encounter with Master Sakadi Marathi Sinvala Sakadi Marathi Sinvala on Anzat. Naturally, his skills were far less honed than those of the Jedi Master, and the call would be more like a daft signal than anything else, but still, he assumed that it would be received.

Risen pretended to set fire. Firestarting was simple — something he’d show the students soon enough — so he let his muscle memory do the work while his attention tuned to his surroundings. The long, silent hike was not suited to observe group dynamics. How they organized themselves would betray their attitudes towards teamwork.

Still, he couldn’t ignore the fraying at the edges.

Padawan Tano-Bonteri was clearly injured, there was no way to ignore it any longer. At best she risked the group; at worst, infection. Her parents had little sway. For his part, Risen viewed them as civilian attendants more than students. He’d portion out his own forage to help keep them comfortable. As for their daughter, he’d have to think of something.

Padawan Candos, too, had finally begun to show signs of exhaustion. Had Risen pushed them too far? The lad hid his fatigue, wandering alone into the woods for rest.

And of course, Risen forced down a wince as Padawan Brion pointed out a hole in the lesson plan. Of course without sabers, many here would be unarmed. Not accustomed to speaking unless spoken to, he decided to wait for Caedyn’s response — pretending, for a while longer, that it was all a part of the plan.

Absorbed in thought, Risen’s head snapped to when the signal came. He snatched Sail, scattering the barely-hot embers of his fire, and glided through the forest with Force-assisted speed. The Matukai’s incredible quickness should have been tempered by the dense forest, but this was Risen’s home terrain. He appeared beside the padawans in a breath, still glowing streaming blue.

Then saw that there was no threat. He let the Force fade from his body, giving no indication of worry as he knelt beside the kill.

“Good work,” Risen said. A day old, the carcass wouldn’t provide them with an easy meal. It likely harbored infection. The bones though…

“We’ll begin our next lesson early. You two, drag the carcass to camp — firmly by the ankles, and careful not to throw your back out. When Padawans Shan and Tano-Bonteri get back with their forage, we’ll arm ourselves.

“Then, we hunt.”

Slip sighed as the others paired off and ran off to forage. Once again, they ran off without him, and he was left behind. Well, what else did he expect? It happened all the time, most people rarely took notice of him. That was fine with him, it allowed him to think. Of course, his thoughts were usually interrupted by random thoughts that appeared out of nowhere.

As Risen began starting a fire, Slip started setting up a shelter. He had brought a small, personal tent for himself. Slip had come prepared, he had been in the wild countless times. He had been taught in survival skills and knowledge back in the laboratories during training. They had been taught how to survive in any environment.

Then, before he could finish, Risen ran off in some unknown direction in a flash, scattering the embers of his starting fire. Slip sighed. He finished up setting up his shelter, then walked over to the fire. He stomped out the scattered embers to prevent a fire, then gathered some nearby kindling. Then, he started creating his own fire, rubbing his own kindling together and setting it up. Once the kindling was at a decent temperature, and starting to smoke, he grabbed his knife, and a nearby rock, and scrapped them together. Sparks came out, and some fell into the kindling. Soon, the small kindling caught fire. Now, he had finished where Risen had left off.

Slip sat back, and watched the fire growing. Across from him sat the shadow man, also staring into the starting flame.

His only company the flame, the shadows, and the hallucination across from him.

But he was used to it.

"So, if we aren't supposed to use our lightsabres unless Risen says so,
how are we supposed to defend ourselves if something were to happen?"

Caedyn smiled at the question, turning to glance to Mathieu Brion Mathieu Brion and giving him an approving nod, the Padawan got points for thinking outside of the square, so to speak. "Master Risen would not risk anything happening to you lot, do not worry. I'm also here to keep an eye out for you all, but if the worst were to occur, I'm sure he would prefer you defend yourself in the unlikely chance that neither of us is able to sense the danger beforehand" Caedyn replied softly, answering Padawan Bron yet also not wanting to discourage the other students from following Risen's instructions.

He wasn't familiar with the experiences that Risen had behind him, yet being Matukai and knowing what training Caedyn himself had undergone, he had no doubt in his mind that the students would be cut loose without some form of safety net to keep tabs on them and prevent any serious injuries. That said, he didn't wish to take the fun out of the experience, as this was a survival trip after-all.

"Just be on your guard" Caedyn added after a thoughtful pause, soon giving something of an amused chuckle at the Padawan's expense as if gently teasing Mathieu with the possibility of danger lurking behind every tree. Truth be told, Kashyyyk held many dangers and it wasn't to be underestimated.

Glancing back to the Instructor for their trip, Caedyn soon followed Risen's line of sight and noticed Jasper Candos Jasper Candos looking rather fatigued. Lifting his head in a half nod, he silently acknowledged his fellow Jedi Knight and moved to check on the young lad while the others busied themselves with their foraging, Mathieu and the others finding some sort of half-eaten meal while Caedyn stayed behind until he could be certain Jasper wasn't going to faint on them.

"You doing alright there, Jasper?" he asked, placing a hand to the Padawan's shoulder and giving a gentle squeeze in encouragement.

Trudging along, and managing Kuxirra's body weight leaning against her, she kept her eyes out. Aayla only knew a few types of food that she could eat this deep into the vegetation, and after some searching she would find a few bushels. Finding a tree that Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri could rest on as she picked a few bushes clean of their Wasaka berries. Finishing up, she turned back to Kuxirra and canted her head, looking still at the area to note they were truly alone before she asked one the questions that had been bugging her.

"Did you break that ankle, or just twist it?" she said in a somewhat teasing manner, secretly wondering why Kuxirra decided to go along on a training like this so soon after injuring herself in that way, on a hike no less... Aayla folded her arms idly, stepping back over to Kuxirra and looking her over.

She watched her then, smirking at the other while her back was turned. Simply impressive, to say the least. "You really have heart, coming all the way out here, working as hard as you do... If I didn't know better, I'd even say a work ethic like that is envious" Aayla said, those arms unfolding as she continued to forage until both of their bags were full. As she neared filling her last one, her eyes snapped to movement in the treeline, though she couldn't make out any shapes, the fact that a creature could be watching them was enough of a premise for them making themselves scarce. She got to her feet, backing away, then turning to leave.

"Come on, lets get outta' here... I don't wanna' meet the locals."

Jasper was so focused on recovering from his hike by breathing that he did not notice someone coming near him (Mathieu Brion). Jasper’s back was in front of the guy when he came over to him and was caught off guard by him. So much to the point where Jasper made a quick 180-degree turn keeping his bottle of water behind him. “Pardon?” Was the one-word Jasper said after the guy spoke to him in a quick tone, not hearing anything he said. He began to inhale and exhale from his nostrils “ I… was just trying some breathing techniques real quick before I go out. I wanted to make sure I got the technique down, so I focused on it more than anything around me just in case.” He lied, trying his best to control his intake and outtake of air while talking to him, making sure that the person in front of him did not notice. However, it became noticeable to anyone with a trained eye that his stomach showed signs of his breathing and Jasper had to increase his air intake once he realizes that he wasn't enough of it. Soon, he starts to calm himself from the initial surprise, and once he did, Jasper cursed himself.

He hoped that no one was going to come near him once he was away from the group. He realized in hindsight he should have gone a least a few more feet away from the group, maybe hide somewhere where he would be less seen. Then again, he would risk the possible chance of an encounter with a breast or something dangerous that could wound him. The last thing he wanted was to continue his lesson injured. He cursed himself again after he asked himself the following question: Is my body that out of shape? His body wasn't heavy but still...When another person ( Caedyn Arenais ) came to him and asked about his well-being, Jasper simply responded by saying two words:

“ I’m fine.”

She would hold some branches aside for Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri , smirking at her comments. "Oh, I meant the latter... And hah, reckless huh? I know the feeling. Hope there's some meat, or fish at least..." she would add, stating that last part more to herself than anything. When they finally arrived back in the clearing, she would look over the remaining group members, unintentionally eavesdropping on whatever conversations may be had, while also putting down her bounty of fruits near the fire.

Mathieu had not said much more to Jasper before departing to head towards the body. In his eyes, his fellow Padawan seemed fine - of course Mathieu would have been able to spot the the other was a little out of breath if he had been looking. But it was really not something Mathieu concerned himself with too much. If Jasper was tired enough, it would become noticeable and at that point, he would be able to extend a helping hand. For now, he would focus on the best.

It only took a brief moment before Risen was right there with him, having rushed to the location at a tremendous speed. Caedyn was right in that they really did keep an eye on the Padawans, for anyone who could reach out, either by a loud holler or a dampened call through the force, would have been able to summon one of the Knights at what seemed like only a moment's notice.

Throwing en eye on Jasper and Caedyn chatting in the distance, Mathieu opted to simply nod at Risen's words but did not act on them to bring Jasper over. He was speaking to the other Knight and if he wouldn't have to intrude, Mathieu would refrain from doing so. With that, the broad-shouldered Morellian took a firm grasp on the two ankles that were closer to the ground before leaning forth and pulling the carcass behind him. His strength was impressive, there was no disputing that - but to pull this feat off without exhausting himself, the Padawan used the force to enhance his strength and endurance. For this journey, he would refrain from friendly chit-chat and instead solely focus on his task until he reached the camp.

Remembering Wildflowers

Risen reentered the clearing to find 648 setting fire. He tipped his head towards the lad, whose technique demonstrated practice. Some in this group, it seemed, were ready for more advanced lessons.

Meanwhile, Padawans Shan and Tano-Bonteri had delivered a few armfuls of bright fruits and berries. Silent, he knelt by the pile and picked through. Most smelled sweet, though several disguised a bitter scent. Risen talked through his process in a low voice, until before him there were two piles: one safe, one foul.

And anyway, Risen explained, much more is edible in nature than you’d think. To make this point he pulled a shoot from the ground, stripped the mud with rough hands, and took a bite.

“Well done,” he told them.

By now Brion had lugged the boar-like body of the Sathog mostly to the clearing, where Risen tossed him a waterskin in thanks. There we awaited Candos and Caedyn to rejoin.

“Wood,” Risen began, addressing the group, “stone, and bone.” He regarded the beast’s corpse. “When making tools, you want something reliable. If your spear snaps on a kill, you risk falling prey to opportunists.”

He drew the survival knife from Sail’s haft and laid into the Sathog. Once quiet but for the snickering of the stream, their clearing was now fogged by the crunch of stirring flesh and bone. The sound was hateful even to Risen, but it was a reality. What remained was a pile of stout bones, and a deflated carrion. Risen washed his hands in the stream.

“Make something sharp. Harden the wood in fire.” Risen drove Sail, his own spear, into the ground as a model, then had another idea.

“While you work, try your best to suppress your presence in the Force.” Then he turned his back to the group and closed his eyes. If they could conceal their signatures from him, then unwary prey would have no chance.

Grey Jedi Padawan/Cinnamon Roll
As Risen Risen picked through the berries, Kuxirra realized her instincts had been right. She had forgone several large bunches of juicy-looking berries, her enhanced senses picking up a bitter scent. "Oh wow," she breathed. "I just thought they smelled bad," she said, gesturing to the poisonous berries.

When it came to the spears, Kuxirra didn't really understand. Didn't fire usually burn wood? "How does the fire harden the wood? Wouldn't it burn?" She asked, picking up a decently sized limb and using it as a walking stick, much to her parents' relief. The relief didn't last long, however, as she only used it to make her way to the pile of bones. Remembering a tradition among her people that her mother had taught her, she nodded to Risen and Mathieu Brion Mathieu Brion . "You hunted and cleaned the animal. You choose what you need first."

"Alright then, glad to hear it" Caedyn replied to Jasper Candos Jasper Candos , giving him a smile before turning back for the others. If the Padawan felt he was fine to go on then Caedyn wasn't going to question it. Part of their trip was all about survival and looking out for themselves, after-all.

Wood, Stone and Bone. Caedyn watched and listened intently to Risen Risen as he addressed the students and spoke about the need for reliable tools out in the wilds. Bone was especially strong and could be sharpened to a point in order to make something like a spear or knife to be used for self defense or easier hunting and foraging.

Of course, the hunting and gutting of animals wasn't something that most people were fond of these days where technology was so frequently available for most worlds, Caedyn wondering who among their students would be horrified by the sight, yet also knowing the reality of being stranded out there, alone and having to use every resource at your disposal.

When Kuxirra asked about the fire potentially burning the wood, Caedyn grinned to himself, remaining quietly and enjoying the company, the curious and intrigued minds of the youth. These were the best of times for a Jedi Knight, taking part in educational adventures like this, away from the grittier truths of the Galaxy.

Slip sat at the fire, watching the flame burn, occasionally feeding the flame sticks and such. Funny, fire needed organic food to survive, but it itself wasn't organic or alive. It had no predators, only prey. Fire was at the top of the food chain. And yet, Slip could control and kill it pretty easily. Killing something with no predators was... ironic, to say the least.

Then, Risen returned to the camp, and tipped his head at Slip for showing his aptitude at survival skills. Slip nodded back. His supersoldier training had taught him very well. All that survival training and exercises had paid off. If only Red was here... he'd have already set up multiple snares and traps. That guy was a survival expert.

Then, the others returned, Kuxirra and the white-haired lady returned with some fruits and berries, which Risen then divided into safe and not-safe piles. Next, another Padawan dragged a large, boar-like carcass towards the camp. Risen began cutting into the carcass. Once he finished, he told them to make something sharp. Kux asked how the fire would harden the wood, since wood burns. "You don't burn the wood, you put the wood close enough to the flame so that it hardens, but doesn't burn. The heat would make the wood more rigid and stiff, since the heat would make the wood lose its moisture." He told her.

Then, Risen told them to try and conceal their presence in the Force. Slip grinned. Now here was also something he could do, and he could do it well. Slip concentrated, and, suddenly, his Force presence completely vanished. To the others, it would feel like he vanished out of existence. Then, it was time for part 2. Using the Force to conceal himself at the same time, he would disappear from the eyes of others. The Force was not only concealing his presence in the Force, but his presence from the physical senses of the others. They wouldn't be able to see, hear, smell, or even feel Slip, both physically and through the Force. He had vanished. He was effectively a ghost. He carefully moved over to the bones. People might not be able to feel him, but if he bumped into them, his illusion might dissipate or completely go away. He walked past Kuxirra, telling another Padawan that he should have the first pick. Slip looked through the bones, and found a good, sharp shoulder blade. Excellent, he already knew what he was going to make. When he grabbed the shoulder blade, he extended his illusion through the Force, making the bone disappear from sight, too. He pulled it out. To the others, it would look like the pile would shift on its own.

Then, Slip set out to find a good sized limb that would be good for the weapon that he wanted to make.

Hearing what Risen said about the berries was disheartening, she knew some were bad, but clearly didn't know how much. Noting Kuxirra had a natural advantage if telling them apart only caused her to smirk with a very light envy. In any case, her next question caught Aayla off guard as well, though she remembered the story of the Togruta's upbringing, and would just stay silent. Once a few had gone, she began working on a weapon of her own. One of the berries from the dropped bags had rolled a bit close to the fire, and as she watched it begin to fizzle, she noted how gooey it was, lightly tapping it with her finger. It stuck. While she could pull her fingers apart, it took a bit of effort.

"Like glue..." she mumbled, gathering a few more, and putting them to the side. With that, she fell into her usual detachment, focusing on doing her task properly, and omitting one of the most obvious tasks that the exercise had to offer; obviously, teamwork. She would wet a stone that had some wait to it, diligently scrubbing it against one of the large stones on the campfire. She repeated this process until it took the shape of a spearhead, and then worked on something to fit it into. She next got a large branch, using her relatively sharpened stone to remove any jagged edges, and make it smooth. It had a good weight to it, but she knew it would snap relatively easy if she tried to use it as an actual weapon. Instead, this would need to be used accurately; a single stab to something vital she wagered.

The berries from earlier would be used as well, unaware she was working so hard she had broken out into a sweat. Rolling the stones broad side against it, she eventually found a way to fit the adhesive spearhead onto its counterpart, now placing the whole contraption by the fire to harden the entire thing. For a moment, she wondered if she had failed, as the stone-head seemed loose, and just sitting in a mass of the stick substance. Moving to wash her hands off in the water, she would return to find that once it cooled, the weapon had held firm. It just needed a little time.

She picked it up, shaking it a bit, but figured there was no better test than action. She turned, hurling the spear through the air with a whistle, it hit the tree she was aiming for, sticking their for a moment, then falling away as it lacked the sharpness to truly penetrate the bark. Though, it left a mark. It wasn't the best weapon, but it'd do. Hopefully. For now, she would mimic Risen's earlier action, eating one of the shoots from the ground, munching on it with a face that was clearly unenthused. Sitting a ways back from the fire and watching in silence.
